生きてるだけじゃ 足りなくて 。 Just being alive is not enough for me. [attr="class","Again"] ❝ "And for this research project," the professor intoned, "You will be working in pairs." Around the classroom students reacted to that as their natures directed. Some looked disgusted or even groaned aloud, while others were thrilled and were already looking around the room for their friends to partner with. "Partners," she continued before the class could devolve into chatter, "Are being randomly assigned." As the class groaned in nigh unison the teacher picked up a fishbowl full of paper scraps from her desk.
"What are we?" hissed one boy under his breath. "In kindergarten? This is bullshit. I wanna partner with someone who'll actually do shit." The teacher, overhearing that comment, didn't deign to comment but gave the boy an altogether frosty smile as she took two paper scraps from the bowl.
"Well how about that, Devin," the teacher said dryly. "It looks like you're partnering with Nerine. I should think you'll be doing your share of the shit don't you?" Devin mumbled and shot a nervous glance at the teal-haired Nerine who looked like she had just bitten something incredibly nasty. It was a fair bet that Devin wouldn't be skating by on this assignment; not with a micromanager like Nerine at the helm.
And so the pairing went. There was exultation and crushed hopes as name after name was called and paired up. Yuuki didn't really know who they would have chosen to pair with so they weren't too fussed about having someone randomly assigned by chance. In fact, they weren't paying much attention to who was stuck with who until they heard their name.
"And no one needs me to mention this since they're the last two but Yuuki and Mavis are our final pair." The teacher looked amused when Yuu looked up at them from their place in the third row. They had needed it said and the teacher knew it. Squirming slightly in discomfort, they turned to Mavis's seat with an unsure little half smile. The younger girl had a bit of a reputation, though Yuu wasn't well acquainted with her by any stretch. When they heard the teacher's last comment about going ahead for getting into pairs, Yuuki slipped out of their seat and slunk over to Mavis, looking a little sheepish.
"Hey Mavis, I'm Yuuki." She already knew that, obviously, but they were about as eloquent as a brick most of the time. "So... um..." they mumbled. "Hi."
Yuuki was almost wishing they were in a more femme mood today. Long hair and cute clothes would have done wonders to hide behind, or at least in But instead they were very decidedly masc and had adjusted their appearance to suit. Even wanting to have something to hide behind didn't make them want to actually make their hair grow out that much. They settled for pulling the hairband out of the short, high ponytail and letting the chin length hair frame and shadow their face a little.

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ Sitting in the back row slouched over the various papers on her desk, Mavis mildly paid attention to the pairings or the grumbling complaints of her fellow classmates. There was no reason to concern herself with their pairs; they could all be grumbling bellyachers for all she cared. All that did matter to the dark haired girl was getting a partner that would actually accomplish some of the work themselves. As more slackers got paired with a name that was not her own, Mavis found herself mildly pleased, although, she would have preferred to work independently. She had never been very good at co-operation after all. As the pairings went on, Mavis propped her elbows on her desk and balanced her chubby face in her hands as she waited for her name to be called.
Eventually, the teacher reached the end of the list and her name was called out alongside her partners. Her eyes trailed over to the individual who swapped between a feminine and masculine appearances, the person who was known as Yuuki. Mavis only knew of their name, an expectation considering they shared a history together, but she knew little to nothing about them. However, they were not on her radar as a work slacker which was something that Mavis could definitely live with. The female teen made little effort to move, she merely remained in her seat and observed with her dark chocolate eyes as Yuuki made their way over. They appeared to be more masculine today based on their appearance. When they flashed Mavis a sheepish smile, the dark haired girl finally straightened into a proper sitting position and listened to their unnecessary introduction.
There was not even the slightest hint of a smile on Mavis's face as she looked at her partner with a bored expression. They seemed somewhat timid which suggested that they likely knew of her tendency to pick fights.
"Yeah, I figured," Mavis began coldly, "and hi to you too."
The dark haired girl leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms as she sifted through to find the paper with the assignment details, however, it seemed lost in her clutter of papers.
"Do you have the assignment sheet?" Mavis asked in a neutral tone.

生きてるだけじゃ 足りなくて 。 Just being alive is not enough for me. [attr="class","Again"] ❝ Around them the class broke into their assigned pairs; some eagerly, some clearly less than pleased. Internally, Yuuki kicked themself for being so awkward about literally everything. Why couldn't they just handle all this like a normal human being, huh? In a matter of moments they were one of the only people still standing and it made them want to sink through the tiled floor beneath their feet. In spite of that, they managed to make eye contact with Mavis, trying to convey that, while they might be the most awkward of awkward turtles, they would be pulling their own weight for this project and would not let her down.
With an unsure-but-game little smile, Yuu nodded at the question. They felt like they might be standing on quicksand. Were they just being sensitive or was Mavis being... unfriendly? They swallowed and replied, "Yes, I-- One sec, I've got it." They squeezed past a nearby pair of students to snag the paper from their desk and returned to their partner, holding out the sheet of paper. "Here it is." Now that just about everyone else was more or less settling down, Yuuki was able to grab a vacated chair from a neighboring desk to pull up alongside Mavis's.
"Sorry," they apologized sheepishly, not really know for what they were apologizing but feeling the need to do so nonetheless. Perhaps they were apologizing for being so awkward. "Anyway," they pressed on. "Did you have anything in mind for a topic or should we put out heads together and figure something out?" They shrugged and tugged at a lock of hair. "I was thinking something from south-east Asia since we have the whole world to choose from and most people will probably be sticking to Europe."

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ As people got settled, Mavis picked up her pencil from her desk and slowly began moving it around her fingers, but her eyes remained on Yuuki. They seemed to be the smiley sort, or at least the ravenette would guess considering the small grin on their face. There was a mild sense of awkwardness that Mavis noticed, but decided it was better to shrug off the concept. Mavis's other arm laid against her stomach while her fingers kept twirling the pencil around. Her dark chocolate eyes watched as they went and snatched their project paper and brought it over. The short girl took the sheet, looking it over while she instead waved her pencil back and forth in the air, but did not take a second to thank her partner for the paper. The movement of a chair came followed by a sheepish apology that got Mavis to give her partner a strange look.
"Why are you sorry?" Mavis began. "Are you bad at history or something?"
The ravenette prayed that her partner was capable in the history department, especially since most of Mavis's interest was in topics like war. It was probably one of the very few topics she enjoyed researching since it did involve combat. She listened while her partner inquired her about if she had any subjects in mind while adding a suggestion on their own. A tiny smile came upon Mavis's face at the suggestion.
"That's some smart thinking, we'd stick out a little bit and not be some copycat," Mavis commented. There was genuine joy in her tone at her partner's thinking. "We're doing an event right? This isn't some cultural assignment is it? Cause you know how teachers add in those questions like 'how did this have an impact on their culture?' or stuff like that. If not, we could do a war or something like that, I prefer researching conflicts and such."
Silently, Mavis awaited an answer while she began swinging the end of her pencil in the air again. The short girl was hoping that their partner was not queasy about topics akin to violence or one of those extreme peace advocates. It was always a nuisance to be paired up with those types of people since Mavis always loved fighting and violence after all.

生きてるだけじゃ 足りなくて 。 Just being alive is not enough for me. [attr="class","Again"] ❝ Bad at history? The question caught Yuuki off guard. They had an A- in history. Why would Mavis think they were-- oh, the apology. Unsure of how to respond, they just shook their head and bit their lip as they wracked their brain for the right things to say and do. An exclamation from another duo made them jolt in place and cringe slightly at the rather obvious verbal scuffle happening on the other side of the classroom. "Yikes," they mumbled, shaking their head slightly, pale eyes pinned to a nebulous place at the corner where the windows and the wall met.
They cleared their throat and rubbed the nape of their neck, trying to shut out the commotion from across the room. When Mavis approved of their idea Yuu visibly perked up, seeming less wilted and more confident. They nodded after their partner had finished speaking.
"Mm hm. It isn't a cultural assignment but the effects of the event need to be covered I think. But a war or something like that would have plenty of effect on things in the aftermath so that shouldn't be hard to cover." Then they looked a bit sheepish again. "I don't know much about south-east Asia and battles or wars. I know they were caught up in WWII and all and there's also Vietnam..." They nibbled the inside their lip lightly before asking, "Was there a certain one you had in mind?"

❧ An eyebrow lifted on Mavis's face as she gave her partner a look of confusing. She could not comprehend why they had randomly given her an apology. When they bit their lip and lacked an answer to the apology, Mavis was fairly certain that they were merely the apologetic type. The female ravenette hoped should she be right, the apologetic behavior would not get overly annoying. Upon the eruption of verbal brawl, the short girl looked up with mild amusement at the display. Fighting was something that Mavis enjoyed after all, however, her interest was more in physical brawling opposed to verbal, thus her interest was lost quickly. Mavis's eyes drifted over to her partner, finding them not nearly as amused with the situation. A long breath escaped the short girl's lips, it was possible this was going to seem like a lengthy partnership. When Yuuki cleared their throat, Mavis's attention returned to them; it seemed probably it was an attempt to keep the focus off the squabbling.
The positive response to the female ravenette's suggestion made Mavis pleased, although they disliked the verbal scuffle in the corner they were content with the concept of a war theme. In silence the young girl listened to what their partner had in mind and gave a shrug.
"Well we have some time, we could always search up a few and see if we like the idea of any," Mavis suggested. "If we find a unique topic it would make the project stand out a little more."
For a moment, Mavis thought debating whether or not the teacher would allow the use of her phone to search up topics. If needed, she could always secretively enlist the use of the device.
"Think the teach will care if I search up some on my phone? Would be more convenient," Mavis asked in an attempt to get insight on the possible repercussions.

生きてるだけじゃ 足りなくて 。 Just being alive is not enough for me. [attr="class","Again"] ❝ It wasn't so much that Yuu was worried about or bothered by the two clashing across the room. It was just that it was awfully hard for them to concentrate with the bickering going on. Thankfully, the teacher put an abrupt end to the kerfuffle and the fighting partners reduced the volume to a vindictive hiss and snap that was much easier to ignore under the assortment of other conversations happening between them and Yuuki. With that mild annoyance out of the way, they were better able to keep their thoughts in order and attend to the topic at hand.
"That's a good idea," they agreed readily. "And we might want to come up with a backup topic for if the teacher vetoes our primary one," they added as an afterthought. It hadn't happened too often but it was guaranteed to throw any project momentum out the window to have to go back the drawing board completely. Yuuki might be willing to take that risk on a solo project but group projects were always more complicated and they wanted no easily avoided errors to tangle them up.
At the question posed by Mavis, Yuuki took a quick glance around before answering, "Should be fine, I think." They spotted at least two other people with phones out and the teacher had yet to call them to task for that. "Actually," they said a breath later. "Let me grab my tablet then we can both see the screen easier." They scooted back to their desk and snagged their tablet with its keyboard case and brought it back to Mavis. A few short moments later they had it unlocked and set in typing position, turned at an angle that would allow Mavis to type easily while letting them both view the screen.
"Grabbed a notebook to jot down ideas too," they added, pulling a small notebook out from their pocket and opening it to a blank page. It seemed that once they were given some positive reinforcement a lot of that backwards awkwardness faded into the background.

❧ There was an amuse gleam in Mavis's eyes as she paid mild attention to the fighting between the one group of classmates. However, she attempted not to surrender her attention towards the verbal squabbling. The short girl adverted her gaze from the fight, instead focusing on her partner in order to get some work completed, but it mattered little. Shorty, the teacher interfered and once again the classroom calmed down to the usual quiet atmosphere of groups chattering about the project or senseless topics. The verbal fighting had become merely an inaudible noise to Mavis as she remained stationed at her seat. Upon the mentioning of trying to pick a few backup topics, Mavis gave a nod in agreement, a slight smile on her lips. How had she been lucky enough to get a partner this good?
"Excellent idea, would be a safer bet too," Mavis said.
Oddly enough, the short girl found herself enjoying their partner's caution and excellent thinking. On most occasions, group projects were a dread, especially during the times when she got stuck with lazy bones partner. Her fortune was something she was most definitely thankful for in this situation. When her partner stated that it would likely be fine, Mavis was just about to slip her phone out of her pocket until Yuuki gave her a reason to hesitate. They had decided a tablet would be better suited for the research, which caused Mavis to nod in agreement. It was better than sitting shoulder to shoulder hovering around her phone's tiny screen. The ravenette only paid mild attention as Yuuki put their password in; she always felt a bit too snoopy watching someone put in a password. Once the short girl was given access to the keyboard she began to think about what to search before deciding to find a list first. Mavis's keyboards swiftly glided over the keys and began to type 'wars in south east asia' and clicked the first link; a wikipedia link that contained a list.
"We could look over this. I know of one obscure one often called 'War in Darfur', but it is often noted as more of a genocide," Mavis stated. Her dark chocolate eyes began drifting over the page's long list as she began to search for something less generic.

生きてるだけじゃ 足りなくて 。 Just being alive is not enough for me. [attr="class","Again"] ❝ Generally speaking, Yuuki hated group projects.Far too often they were stuck with the brunt of the work, likely in part because they were pretty bad at self-advocating. But in spite of Mavis's reputation for being trouble, Yuu found themself enjoying working with her. She was sharp and clearly motivated. On top of that, she was treating them like an equal which was doing wonders for their self esteem just now. Maybe they'd end up bonding and becoming friends over the course of this project! Or maybe Yuuki was getting ahead of themself.
They got their thoughts grounded again and redirected their focus to the matter at hand; the tablet in front of them and the need for a topic or two. Yuuki nibbled the inside of their lip as they watched Mavis bring up a page on Wikipedia and listened attentively to what she said. "Darfur..." they echoed thoughtfully. "That's... Africa, right?" They tapped thoughtfully at their cheek and went on. "Maybe we should branch out into Africa since conflict is... sadly something of a trend in many countries."
"Although..." They reached out and pointed at the screen. "It looks like there's a few ongoing things in Asia as it is. What about this one?" Impulsively, they tapped the the link to an article about the ruling party of Burma versus the Karen National Liberation Army. "I've never heard of it but it looks like it's been going for like..." They did some quick mental math looking at the year it started. "Sixty(?) years. I think."
