Another day of school was done. Evening had crept up on Erika pretty quickly and it was a shame to her because she was ready to hit the archery range yet again and get some practice in. She had figured sending a video message of her practicing at the range to her upperclassmen and friends back in Japan and the UK. Something to let them know that she was doing well and to not worry about her. That she was living life well, without any burdens. Without her father. But she thought twice about it still undecided on whether to do it or not. On one hand, that would quell the questions that were sent from time to time in her email and via text message. On the other hand, that more questions similar to "Where are you? Are you doing well? What happened to your dad?" would spike up. That, the platinum blonde could do without. The currently blue-eyed girl had slipped into her dormitory changing out of her uniform and into a comfortable wooly down pink sweater with a cute little Shiba inu puppy in the center of the sweater.
So she had opted for doing homework as soon as classes had ended and that had taken a good three hours with a couple of "breaks" in between when the numbers and letters started to blur against each other. Once her immediate homework was done though, and Erika could not take studying anymore, she teleported herself out of her chair and into the common room taking one of the seats. A couple of other students were nearby chatting, fooling around...She could hear some boys not too far away shouting, presumably from their video game consoles. With the few that were chatting in the common area, one jumped at her sudden appearance. An underclassman Erika had presumed. As she had previously noticed, hardly any of the second years had jumped at her teleportation powers. Emery being the biggest exception. She smiled to herself recalling the startled expression that led to their lesson in archery and furthermore their newly established friendship. And her upperclassmen were hardly phased by teleportation. Though the odd one or two of them would jump from time to time.
Erika had lain back on an empty couch kicking her feet up and placing her hands behind her head in a lax position. A lot of her fellow classmates were beginning to gravitate away from the common room taking their conversations with them to one of the two's bedrooms. The powder blue eyed girl had considered calling or texting Emery, but if she had any late classes, Erika did not want to be the one to interrupt them. The flatscreen before them was muted and she dug through the couch to eventually find the remote that belonged to the television. She turned to face the few students who were left, but found that the majority of the students had left save for a few who were catching up on sleep and a couple of guys who were making out against the wall. Nice...she thought to herself, not sure if she was half-way annoyed that they couldn't find the privacy to do that in either one of their rooms and half-way jealous that she did not have anyone to do that with. The thought made the natural rosy blush in her cheeks flush five shades darker.
Romance would come when it would decide to come and she would hardly be the one who would want to rush it. So to get her mind off of it, the second year flipped aimlessly through channels taking the television off of mute, and found herself watching nothing in particular. So she eyed around the room until a burgundy-covered book fell into her vision. Picking it up, she flipped open the first two pages to find Secret Garden in bold, black lettering. She wondered if it belonged to anyone in particular or if it belonged to the library. Slowly, yet surely though, Erika found herself engrossed in the book and developing an attachment to the protagonist, Mary. 378 WORDS ▪ @erika ▪ NOTES Edmund rushed into the commons and flopped into his favorite seat, an overstuffed, soft and worn armchair, and let out a small sigh of content. He was done with his classes for the day, and after a quick trip to his room to change out of his stiff uniform and into loose faded jeans and an oversized shirt printed with a skull and roses, he had dashed over here to secure his chair before anyone else could. He hadn't really needed to rush, though, because the commons were practically empty. That was a bit of a surprise. Usually he could barely find a place to sit and ended up back in his own dorm because of the level of noise. This was a comforting change, though. He pulled his legs up into the chair with him, sinking into the back, and took a moment to examine his book more closely. He had grabbed a random one from the pile he'd checked out after his encounter with Emery before coming to the common room, and didn't take the time to find out which one he'd taken, thinking it would be a surprise. He turned over A Darker Shade of Magic in his hands with a smile. That was definitely a good draw. Even though he'd read it before, he was happy to do so again a hundred times. He loved being plunged into the story of Kell and Rhy and Lila, of different worlds, of kings and darkness and murder and flowers. And of happy endings, despite the struggles. A smile made its way to his lips and he opened the book, ready to read, and found himself quickly engrossed in the text. He was only dragged out by the movement of a girl within the room. The lack of the usual background noise made it easier to notice the little sounds, and he could clearly hear the clicker in her hand as she flipped through channels on the TV. Edmund tilted his head, laying his book down on his knee, to observe her. She quickly grew bored with that activity and picked up a book, intriguing Edmund. Trying not to make himself noticeable, he peeked at the cover of the book in order to discern what she was reading.

Erika had found herself lost in her book, and she was thoroughly enjoying herself. After a couple of minutes passing by, she had already reached chapter three and frustratingly found herself attached to the character of Mary. Mary seemed to have one hell of an entitled and bratty attitude problem, but given the circumstances she was placed in, the platinum blonde could not help but feel sorry for her. She was sick. She had to deal with all these adults making decisions about her life for her without much input save for the input she gave in her mind. This little girl at the age of nine had to deal with people who did not like or appreciate her all that much. In a way, Erika could understand as she had to deal with a similar situation. Not that both parents died, though frankly, when her father became abusive, she figured that he might as well be dead. Dead to her at least. Slaving for his father, working to make ends meet, cooking for some goddamn hookers and not having much of a choice in the matter because she was still a dependent...It was multiple blows to her pride.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, the currently violet-eyed girl had placed the book on her lap getting the sense that she was being watched. She turned her head, only to come face to face with an equally pale, thinly-muscled, raven-haired boy who seemed no older than her and wore a rose and thorns shirt and some skinny jeans. She blinked meeting his onyx eyes with a sort of understood questioning look. He seemed be intrigued with what she was reading and Erika followed his eyes. She panicked a bit. Maybe this book belonged to him and he was looking for it. She had no intentions of keeping it. Picking up the book, she somewhat shoved it in front of him. "I'm sorry!~ I had no intention of keeping it!~" the second year responded in a bit of a flustered manner. "I was just a bit bored. Didn't feel like leaving the campus, and there was nothing on the tele, and so..." The natural rosiness in Erika's cheeks began to heat up. "It's...pretty interesting. I'll probably buy a copy of my own." the amaranthine-eyed girl bowed her head as her eyes started to look for where she had put the remote. There was nothing interesting on, but Erika was not fully dedicated to her first search in the first place. She would try again and find something. There was always something on TV. 222 WORDS ▪ @erika ▪ NOTES Edmund winced at the girl's frantic reaction, shrinking back slightly at the sudden noise, but feeling a pang of guilt at her quick apology. It wasn't his book, and nobody else in the room seemed concerned with it. "No, please don't stop reading because of me. I mean, you can if you want to, but, uh, don't feel obligated to? I didn't mean to scare you or anything like that. I just wanted to see what you were reading." He held up his own book with a soft smile. "It's always nice to see someone else enjoying a book. Not a lot of people actually read anymore, heh." Now that the book was down, he could see what it was. The Secret Garden. Not his favorite, by any means, but he avoided wrinkling his nose at the title. He didn't want the girl to think he disliked her by extension, or anything like that, and he could walk on glass for now to avoid startling her or scaring or offending her. He hated it when he accidentally frightened people, and he knew he'd probably be feeling a little guilty for the next few days. He slowly crossed his legs and looked at the girl awkwardly, trying to think of something to say to repair the mood. "Do you, um, come here often...?"

Post by Erika Wyndham on Mar 17, 2017 16:20:11 GMT
Erika’s eyes widened slightly as she watched the onyx-eyed boy cringe and shrink back into himself. Had she scared him? Was her voice really that loud? She figured since they were indoors, she could probably lower it a bit further. “Oh!~” she laughed briefly, though becoming mindful of the volume of her voice, the blonde lowered it a bit more to an octave that could be considered comfortably above a whisper. The platinum blonde picked up the book once more. She hardly considered herself a reader. Most of the time, she was too preoccupied in getting into other things to pick up many books, but Erika had not minded. In fact, reading had become one of her most recent hobbies. It was a silver lining for her stemming from horrible situations.
The times where the amaranthine-eyed girl had locked herself in her cramped space back in England where the times her father would beat on the door. She would cry to herself at first trying to ignore it and sleep it off. As she got older, smarter, and sadly more adjusted to her father’s abuse, she would purchase headphones and block out the nose through other activities. The malevolent banging on the doors would seem to be but a distant memory to her as music filled her ears. Erika would paint her nails; hum along to the music and when she would get off work at reasonable hours, she would stop by a nearby library or bookstore and read until closing hours or purchase a book to bring home. While she would wait for her nails to dry, she would usually crack open a new book. Fantasy fictions and dystopian novels were her guilty pleasure. American authors’ visions of adolescence tended to provide some interesting perspectives.
"No, please don't stop reading because of me. I mean, you can if you want to, but, uh, don't feel obligated to? I didn't mean to scare you or anything like that. I just wanted to see what you were reading."
Erika had returned the kind and gentle smile that the pale boy gave from across the room. She looked back against the hard cover of the burgundy book. The gold lettering etched across the surface in a large, formal font. Secret Garden. The girl flushed. As reading was a fairly new hobby for her, and she was hardly eloquent in her reading categories, she could not help but feel a bit more embarrassed. Furthermore, the book was a bit juvenile to be reading at her age, but it could have been considered a nostalgic read. There were times where you could read something as a child, and pick it up again, older; finding some tokens inside that one might have missed as a child. Erika was about to open to the next page where she had last left off, but was pulled away from the book at the boy’s question:
"Do you, um, come here often...?"
The platinum blonde gave a bemused expression. “Not really. It’s usually too crowded here. I’m actually surprised it’s not crowded at the moment. I don’t know many people.” Who was Erika kidding? She only knew one person on campus, Emery. That was, as of the current moment, her only friend. The half-Brit glanced back over to the teen tucking her legs underneath of her black faux leather skirt and extended a pale hand from underneath of her long-sleeved, lavender sweater. “Name’s Erika Wyndham. What’s yours?"
But Erika was more than willing to change that. WORDS: 587 TAGS: @edmund NOTES: Currently wearing: [ x ]

Edmund relaxed as the girl comfortably picked up the book again. He really hadn't thought he would come of as rude or something without even saying a word... this was a new level of fail for him. But he had fixed it, which was relief. And at his question, she offered him some semblance of a smile. He nodded as he listened to her response. "Yeah, it is usually pretty full in here. I only come down when I can get here early enough to grab this chair." He patted the arm of his seat to demonstrate, but quickly withdrew his hand. Who was he kidding? She didn't care about his favorite chair. He looked back to the girl to see that she had extended her own arm towards him, offering it to shake as she stated her name. Erika. Edmund grinned and took her hand in his own, giving it a half-hearted shake before taking his hand back. He was awful at handshakes, but he appreciated the sentiment. "It's nice to meet you, Erika," he responded. "I'm Edmund. Edmund Dickinson. Second year. Um, you said that you don't know many people... are you new here?" He was interested to learn a little more about this girl. He hadn't seen her around before, and even though he didn't talk to many people, he often recognized their faces from being in the same class or something... but she was completely unfamiliar. It was possible she was older, but she looked to be about Edmund's age. Not that that meant a whole lot, because he didn't look his own age, but it was still possible.
