250 WORDS ▪ @tagged ▪ NOTES E dmund set another book on top of his growing stack, tucking it carefully beneath his chin. He'd come down here to get something to help with his science homework, but then he'd spotted a novel he'd heard about and just had to snag it. Then there had been the graphic novel version of one of his favorite books, which he added to his first two, along with the original book so he could compare it. Getting that book had made him nostalgic and he'd ended up searching for one of his other favorites as a kid, which led to the discovery of yet another new novel. This is the last one, he thought, wary of the leaning mess in his arms. This could keep him busy for an entire weekend... which he did have. Oh, although he could add a copy of King Lear to his agenda... Edmund was so busy trying to keep any books from falling that he didn't pay any attention to where he was going and ended up dropping all of them as he slammed into another person. He dropped to the ground in order to recover them before he remembered his manners and glanced up at the person he'd run into, feeling sheepish. "Oh, I'm really sorry, I, uh, wasn't watching where I was going." He could feel his cheeks tinging red as he stood up, books back in his arms, and added and extra apology just for good measure.

Emery waltzed in the library, feeling perfectly at ease. Today was a good day. Her class ended a bit earlier than usual, meaning she had all the time in the world to stop by her favorite place in the world: wherever there were books. She could feel her heart racing, breath accelerating slightly with pupils dilated at the mere thought of holding a fresh book in her hand. Truly she was, without a doubt, a geek in every sense of the word. And she loved every minute of it.
Turning around a new row, however, and she found herself running smack into another person roaming the aisle. Luckily she wasn’t carrying any books; unluckily, the boy she ran into had several books, one of which fell smack on her foot. She winced at the sharp pain on her toes, trying her best to remain calm and keep a neutral face in front of the newcomer.
“Oh, I’m really sorry, I, uh, wasn’t watching where I was going,” she heard the boy mumble, picking up the books and standing back up before she could offer to help.
Shaking her head, Emery put on her usual front and dismissed his apology. “No need to apologize. I wasn’t looking where I was going.” She really had a bad habit of running into people these days. Deciding to make it up to the boy, she offered politely, “I was actually coming in here to study. Do you need a partner?”

219 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES A s Edmund stood up, the girl dismissed his apology, but he still felt bad. And he'd dropped one on her foot, too, he'd noticed in his frenzy to pick them back up and get out of her way. But... she was offering to study with him? She really wasn't mad? He felt a nervous smile tugging at the corners of his lips, but the awkward flush didn't fade from his cheeks. "A study partner would actually be really nice, that is, if you don't mind. That is, assuming you're in year two, as well. I wouldn't want to bother you with concepts you've already learned." Edmund shifted his weight and moved the books so that he was holding them as securely as he could, so he wouldn't have to focus as much attention on holding them steady. After all, that was the reason he'd run into the girl in the first place. He pulled his science book from the bottom of the pile, since it was the only one that was actually curriculum-related. Oops. "I'm Edmund, by the way. Sorry again for the... rude introduction." He chuckled softly and glanced at the girl. He would have offered his hand to her to shake, but his arms were rather full, so he just stood silently.

Emery wasn’t used to people being flustered around her, but as the boy fumbled over his words to speak, she found herself having to hold back a chuckle. He was apparently her age when she heard him mention Year Two, yet he acted younger. Smaller. More insignificant. Something she could relate to, and felt empathy toward.
After he introduced himself as Edmund, she nodded her head and began to speak. “Nice to meet you, Edmund. I’m Emery, a year two student as well.” Glancing around the room, she spotted a table by a window and pointed over toward the spot, adding, “Let’s go ahead and sit down.”
Not waiting for a response, she grasped half the stack of books from his hands and began walking over to the table, placing them down carefully and muttering a “These are heavy.” Looking down at the titles of the books, she flipped through a few before turning to ask, “Do you happen to have a book on pyrokinesis?”

353 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ This took me so long I'm so sorry T he barest hint of a frown flickered across Edmund's face as he noticed the girl stifle a laugh. He couldn't pull any strong thoughts or feelings from her mind without digging, and he hated doing that, and so couldn't tell if she was laughing at or with him, to put it simply. He hoped she wasn't just offering to study with him out of pity, or because she thought he was so weird that she just had to see his train wreck of a being in action. But... it was probably fine, and he didn't want to violate her privacy by trying to unlock her thoughts, so he would just stay in the dark and do this the old-fashioned way. The two began to walk to a table, and the girl introduced herself as Emery. "That's weird," he muttered with a laugh, and pointed to the book on the top of his stack. "One of the characters in here is called Emery." His gesture seemed to draw the girl's attention to just how many books he was holding, and she grabbed about half the stack, ignoring his protests. "Uh, thanks," he finally muttered, relenting to the fact that she just would not let him carry them all and be a ~manly man~. He took a seat at the table, tilting his head slightly as he watched the girl, Emery, thumb through his books. She questioned him about pyrokinesis, and he shook his head. "Not in that stack, no. But I can suggest a few. Fiction-wise, there's Firebug by Lish McBride. It's a little harder to find nonfiction, but there were a couple I saw at one point. Couldn't tell you the title but I could sight them out, no problem." Edmund could go on talking about books for hours, but he made himself stop. That was enough for now. If she asked more questions, he'd have to be careful not to just completely take over the conversation with his ranting on literature. "Are you a pyromancer? Is that why you ask? I'm curious," he added, trying to contribute to conversation.

“One of the characters in here is called Emery,” she heard him mention.
“Really?” Emery’s eyes lit up. “That’s a first for me. I haven’t met or read of anyone with my name. How neat.” She vaguely noticed his frown and reluctant tone as she helped him carry the books, but chose not to say anything. He surely knew she didn’t mean any harm by it; rather, if he knew her, he would know this was typical behavior for her. She couldn’t help but help others, whether they really wanted it or not. That was just the way she was. A people-pleaser.
As Edmund went on a bit about pyrokinesis books, Emery took the chance to sit down across from him at the table and folded her arms across one another. It was a little chilly in the library today, she noticed, and was kicking herself for not bringing a sweater or cardigan. “Oh, that’s fine. No need to go out of your way to find me a book," she explained, shaking her head. Really, the last thing she wanted was to inconvenience someone.
When he asked her about her pyrokinesis, she nodded her head. "I am, but I have it under control," she went on, not wanting him to worry about her ability. Not that it would stop her from worrying about him worrying about her. Ugh, it gave her a headache just thinking about it. Deciding to change to topic, she turned to ask him, "What about you? Do you have a certain ability that got you here?" Realizing she might be crossing boundaries, she quickly added, "I mean, you don't have to answer that if you don't want to."

277 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES E dmund shrugged at the girl's reluctance for him to find a book. It was really no trouble. Although, he supposed that must have been the same thought running through her head when she carried his books for him, and he'd been rather resistant to that, so he decided to keep his mouth shut as Emery briefly elaborated on her powers. So she was a pyromancer. "That's so cool, I've never met one before!" He hadn't really spent time getting to know too many people at Aurora, and elementally-gifted people seemed to be few and far between. The focus of the conversation shifted to Edmund once again as Emery asked about his powers. She added that he didn't have to tell if he didn't want to and Edmund grimaced just a bit. He was giving off such a timid impression. He always acted in a soft, gentle manner, but meeting someone and immediately apologizing to them about twenty times just made him seem exceedingly nervous. Which he supposed he could be, as much as he hated it... but he couldn't kick himself over that right now. Back to the conversation. "Primarily, I'm gifted in telekinesis," he stated, trying to let the words roll from his mouth easily and unaffected, although that just made him worry that he would seem artificial. He just couldn't win, dang it! "But I've also developed just a bit of telepathy, and when people's thoughts or emotions are really strong I can just hear them and feel them. I can do a little digging in people's minds and pull out their thoughts, but I hate doing that. It just feels so... invasive."

“That’s so cool, I’ve never met one before!”
“Oh, really?” she asked cautiously. Emery wasn’t sure how to approach the subject of her being able to light fires wherever she pleased, whenever she pleased; she assumed the subject, itself, would make the boy nervous, but he seemed genuinely interested. Truth be told, she’s always wanted someone to confide in about her abilities. It wasn’t everyday she got an opportunity like this – better make the most of it.
Nodding to herself, she turned and put a pleasant smile on her face. “Actually, there’s a class for pyrokinesis, as well as others similar. To be honest, it’s somehow relaxing. I sometimes have a little fireball circling around me – he’s adorable, you’d like him. Oh! But I shouldn’t show him in the library, what with all the books that could possibly be burnt. That would be a tragedy.”
Embarrassed that she went so far as to talk about her personified ball of fire, she hastily made a comment of “But I’m talking too much!” and quietly shut herself up to listen to Edmund go on about his own talents. When he mentioned telekinesis and telepathy, her eyes lit up with interest. “Those are fascinating gifts,” she admitted, recrossing her arms over one another and leaning back in her chair. “But I can understand why you’d feel that way about your ability. Besides pyrokinesis, I can also sense another’s presence in the nearby area. That also feels a bit invasive, on a different degree. Like I’m a stalking magnet or something.” She blushed at her comparison and shook her head once more. Keep it together, Emery!

310 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES
Edmund let out a little aww as Emery mentioned her fireball. He couldn't help it, it just sounded kind of amazing and adorable. And he was sure the soft glow would be rather comforting... disappointment tugged at the edges of his mind when Emery noted that it wouldn't exactly be safe to summon in a library. "I suppose that's true, isn't it?" he muttered with a slight nod. Just because it was logical not to light fire in a room full of paper didn't mean he didn't still want to see it. Although, when he phrased it that way, it just sounded a little psychotic. Let's move away from those thoughts... As he pulled his mind back to more relevant thoughts, the girl stated her appreciation for his talents. Well, it was good to know someone thought they were cool. Edmund himself viewed them as more of a burden, having to train and hone them to be useful without causing himself pain, whether that be physical or emotional. And the way he had been pushed to develop them in the first place was hardly worth it. Sometimes he wondered how much better off he would be if he, and more importantly Edgar, had never inherited the power they did. But he couldn't change the past, all he could do was try and make it worth it. And it helped to find people who shared his same annoyances and pains -- which it seemed that Emery did. Invasive powers, just like him, and apparently minor guilt about it, as well. Edmund could feel a grin making its way onto his face. He was powerless to stop it, and just chuckled softly with a slight shake of his head. "You know how messed up everything is when we can bond over feeling like creepy stalkers just as much as we can over books."

As Emery went on about her trusty fireball, she heard Edmund make out a little aww and held back a smile. She didn’t feel like smiling to make fun of the boy; on the contrary, she thought it was amazing that someone took a genuine interest in her. It wasn’t often she got to converse with others like she was today – the day was just full of surprises for her.
When Edmund made a little comment agreeing with her to not create the fireball, she nodded her head. “Yes, well, it’s more of a comfort for me than actually being useful. There’s something soothing about watching the flames flicker on a fire, though I suppose my attraction to fire has something to do with being naturally affiliated to the element. Still, to each their own. I’m sure you also have something that comforts you in a similar way, yes?” Realizing she was being intrusive, she quickly shook her head and added, “You don’t have to answer that.”
After she compared herself awkwardly as a stalker with her secondary ability, she watched the boy chuckle and make the same comparison to himself. Deciding to let her guard down a notch, Emery felt the corners of her lips raise into a small smile. Letting out a soft giggle of her own, she nodded her red head in agreement. “Things sure can be messed up, especially at this school.” Her laugh lowered to silence as she paused to think that statement over. Yes, it was true: she had run into a few messed up situations since joining Aurora Academy. There was no denying that.
Still, she didn’t regret accepting her enrollment to the school. There were things she was learning about herself, and others, that she would’ve never understood without the help of the extraordinary academy. She really did have a lot to be grateful for. Before she realized it, her mouth opened of its own accord and formed the words, “I’ve never felt more at home than at this school, though.”

369 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES The girl talked more about her fireball, how it was more of a comfort object than anything else. Edmund nodded slowly as she pondered if he had something like that, to which he shrugged. "I'm sure everyone does, but not everyone's safety blanket is corporeal. To me, books really keep me sane because I can lose myself in the stories and remind myself that, hey, at least we don't live in a world where the Hunger Games are a real thing." He looked down, feeling a little exposed in all his admissions to Emery. Books sometimes gave him a sense of schadenfreude, watching everything in them crash and burn while he was on a roller coaster that seemed to only go up. It wasn't pride at real people's pain, but considering the sadism and sociopathy that seemed to run in his genes, he often found himself walking a tightrope and was worried he'd fall down the same path as his brother. He grimaced at the thought, but looked back to the girl with a nervous laugh. "Having a fireball is definitely cooler than carrying around a book, though." Edmund liked talking to Emery. She understood him, it seemed, but wouldn't push him to talk about things he didn't want to, not that any truly uncomfortable topics came up. And her gentle, carefree manner and little giggle... She was just comforting to be around, even though he'd only known her for an hour, tops. And just like him, she felt at home here. Some people just treated Aurora like any other boarding school. You came to learn, went home over breaks, and then back to the everyday drag of school life. But to Edmund, it was safe. He missed Juliet, but even when he went home his parents barely let him see her. At least here he was free to be himself and not have to worry about the suffocating voice in the back of his head telling him he was a monster, and the all-too-loud thoughts of his family confirming his fear. "Messed up is okay. It adds flavor to life. And... I'd rather have a slightly dysfunctional family at this school than one that doesn't show any love."

Emery listened to Edmund go on about books and nodded her head in agreement, giving a small chuckle at the Hunger Games comment. “Yes, well, that’s certainly true. I don’t think a lot of us would last in a world like that.” She tilted her head for a moment, pondering, before turning to face the boy with a new thought on the forefront of her mind. “While it’s true that some books would be a disaster to live in, I believe some would be interesting, don’t you? Imagine living in the world of Pride and Prejudice, for instance,” she replied, laughing. “A world where all you have to worry about is social status and who’s going to the next ball. What a regal time that must’ve been.”
Emery didn’t consider herself much of a romantic, though she supposed that last comment might’ve given the wrong impression that she was. The truth was, she just loved the world of books. Immersing herself in a good book could leave her busy and satisfied for hours, taking her to faraway lands where different things were possible. It was almost like Aurora Academy – the school felt like a fairytale in the sense that people came to discover more about themselves then they could on their own.
Plus, students had supernatural powers here. That, by itself, made this seem like some strange fantasy story.
As she listened to Edmund’s comment about her fireball, she was quick to shake her head in disagreement. “That’s not true. Books can hold so much more inside them than a simple ball of fire can. Books hold worlds of fireballs.”
She felt his last words about family were something he was honestly revealing about himself, and so she said nothing but merely nodding her head. Honesty was something not many people felt comfortable about around her to reveal, and with Edmund giving her a chance she didn’t want to mess things up. A normal person would take the opportunity to add something honest about themselves – reveal something, perhaps, from their own past – but Emery was hesitant. She didn’t want to cause problems, something that ultimately held her back from being herself in all situations.
Deciding to change the subject, she grabbed the nearest book by her – a science book – and asked in a softer tone, “So what are you trying to study?”

335 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ sorry this is late! Edmund wrinkled his nose as Emery posed the thought of living in the world of Pride and Prejudice. "If I had to spend my life in an Austen novel I'd about die of boredom and unnecessary emotional saturation," he interjected with a laugh. "A Shakespearean comedy would be so much more fulfilling. Adventure, convoluted but entertaining romance, a healthy dose of cross dressing -- and I'd look rather fine all dressed up as a girl, if I do say so myself." He was joking, of course, but when he really thought about it, that wouldn't be that bad. His diminutive figure and young face would definitely help him to pass well... although it would be funnier if he were a brawny manly man with stubble that grew longer every five minutes. "And always ending in a happy marriage. Tell me that wouldn't be a fun story to live in. Well, as long as you're one of the protagonists." Shakespeare had always been one of his favorite classic authors because of the complete oddity of his stories. He could always count on paging through Twelfth Night to bring his mood up if he was feeling poorly. Books really were his safety, weren't they? Well, he still didn't think it was as cool as a floating fireball, despite Emery's protests, but books could never hurt him. Well, unless he got a paper cut. He was pulled from his thoughts as the red-headed girl refocused their conversation. That was right... they were supposed to be studying. "I was trying to figure out all these math concepts. Matrices and I don't get along well." He giggled a bit uneasily as he thought to the pile of work he had to do. It made his head hurt just to think about trying to do all the weird multiplication tactics and inverses and what-nots. He lifted a hand to rub the base of his neck and looked back to Emery. "What about you, anything in particular you were hoping to work on?"

Emery felt herself laughing along with Edmund as he poked fun at Austen novels. While she should’ve felt embarrassed that he didn’t like her suggestion, as most people would, she instead took it for what it was: his own opinion. She rarely took anything personal – her end goal was still to please those around her, and she seemed to be doing a good job regardless of their differences in books.
When he brought up his own preference of Shakespeare, she found herself nodding in agreement mechanically. Normally she would agree regardless of her opinion – after all, the other party is always right – but today she agreed simply because she agreed. And that, for her, was something of a rarity. “True. Shakespeare certainly had a way with words. I certainly wouldn’t mind being described in the era of old English.”
Edmund made a comment about looking presentable cross-dressed, and Emery nodded her head in approval. “You certainly would make a pretty girl,” she added, giving a small smile to show she was in on the joke, despite the fact that she did agree: Edmund’s small stature would, in fact, make for a pretty girl.
As she turned her attention back to the books, she vaguely heard Edmund mention his dislike toward the current math lesson. She hummed in thought, knowing she didn’t understand math well, either, but wanting to help him regardless. “Actually, I’m not too great with math,” she admitted, feeling her cheeks blush. “But I’m sure if we put both our heads together, we’ll be able to figure it out.”
“As for what I’m working on,” she continued, “it’s like I mentioned earlier – I was hoping to find a book on pyrokinesis. I’m open to finding books on several abilities, though. I was wanting to learn about other abilities so I’m not taken by surprise anymore. The other day, someone teleported right in front of me!” She laughed at the awkward encounter, scratching her cheek in thought. “Maybe we could look for books of that sort? Unless you need to focus on your math,” she quickly added, giving him the choice. She made sure to never be the one to choose.

357 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES As the girl admitted her own frustration with math, Edmund let out a little laugh. Boy, he sure was doing that a lot, wasn't he? Now he would be focusing on trying not to laugh too much for the rest of their conversation... but they really were kindred spirits. He noticed the tinge of red on Emery's cheeks, not quite rivaling her hair but probably close, and immediately felt kind of bad for laughing. "Sorry," he apologized quickly, his hands raising in a submissive manner to show he meant no harm, "It's just that I find it kind of humorous how similar we are. Well, except for our like or dislike of Austen. I hope I'm not offending you." With that out of the way, he felt far more comfortable. He hated conflict and while someone's feelings weren't necessarily conflict it could quickly spiral out of control. Besides, he didn't want to ruin what seemed like it could blossom into a rather strong friendship with a few misplaced interjections. Emery began to talk about what she had come to look for, and Edmund nodded along. Having someone just teleport in front of you sounded quite startling, but he, like the other girl, was intrigued to learn more about such a power. That would be a nice activity, he thought; looking for different resources on all the diverse powers at Aurora. It wasn't a topic he usually delved into, for while others' powers caught his interest, he was always scared to explore more about his own. That's why he slacked off so much in his non-traditional academic classes -- he was terrified of what he would find. He hated his own powers, he just did. And learning more about them, increasing his power, would set him farther apart and make everything more difficult. But... doing it with someone else woudl make it better. So, when Emery offered him the choice of looking at his math, versus going with her to find more books, he quickly settled on the latter. "We can have a little adventure. Besides, anything to postpone the headache that algebra gives me is the best option."
