the anchors in my heart cannot be for nothing, yet we still stand apart
It was hard to smile. It was a beautiful spring afternoon. The sky was clear, the sun was bright, and the breeze was delightful. Even so, Nenetl sat on the edge of the Founder's Fountain listlessly trailing her fingertips through the water, face carefully blank. Truly, she wanted to cry. Today was her brothers' birthday. Necalli and Eztli would have been eighteen today if everything hadn't gone wrong; if they had still been alive. The date had crept up on Nene and she hadn't even thought about the importance of the day until she had seen it written on the board in her first class.
How could she have let it slip her mind? She thought about her siblings every day; missed them every moment. This time last year she had been trying to keep the gifts for them secret in a small house with minimal space for secrets. This time last year she had been terribly busy helping get their party ready with the rest of the family. Papá hasn't been there since he had been away in the city for work. But Mami and Tocih and all her siblings were there. Ezi's and Calli's friends, and the rest of the nearby family, would be coming over. It had been hectic and crazy and wonderful.
No matter how many people were around, Nene always felt a little hollow, as if the fire that had transported her had burned away something inside her; some important and vital part of her. No matter how many people she met and no matter how nice they were, there was a gaping hole in her life where her family had been. Nene knew if she went back to her room at the dorms she'd just curl up and cry and that wouldn't get her anywhere.
Still, she wasn't doing much better out here, though the warmth of the sun and the slightly cool breeze did help a little. Watching the thin wisps of cloud drift overhead from their distorted reflection in the rippling waters of the fountain, Nenetl whispered, "Nimitlailnamiqui, Ezti. Nimitlailnamiqui Calli. Nimitlailnamiqui..." Her throat clogged with the urge to cry and tears she refused to shed blurred her eyes. Was she anyone at all without her brothers and sisters? With her mother dead and her father who knew where? So far away from everything and everyone she had ever known, was she really anything?

Kazu was coming from class or at least he just finished, and he was planning to go visit scooter. The bear that lived in the local park. He had met scooter a while ago and they just clicked. Kazu would go and hang out with scooter for a while. Just hang out as he would usually use scooter as back rest as he slept the day away. Scooter did not care what so ever as he got some free food when ever Kazu did come. He had also planned to visit the foxes in the forest that surrounded the school. The foxes were a family, a mom and a couple of cubs that Kazu looked after them, usually brought them food so the cubs could live. He knows it isn't the right thing to do in bringing them food but he couldn't resist his inner child. As he walked through he campus he found his way to the fountain. He stopped by and saw a couple birds. He stopped by the fountain and started to talk to them about really nothing. He was a sucker just to talk about anything with animals and see how they were. after all he loves them. As they pointed out a girl that was alone which was odd for Kazu. Granted he has watched some anime and thought someone alone by a fountain always meant sadness. But that is just Kazu thinking stupidly. He looked at the person and noticed the girl. Her eyes were a little glossy. He felt sad for her all alone with some glossy tint to her eyes. He looked at her and frowned. Kazu was like a big brother to anyone. After all with Yuu being gender-fluid he had to start accepting Yuu despite him not agreeing with it. Plus his little sister. How could he just ignore that poor face. He looked at her as he started to approach her. Once he got to her he squatted down and looked up at her. He poked her forehead. "What's with the long the face on such a nice day huh." he said with a bright smile plastered on his face. "How about we turn that frown upside down." he added as he kept smiling at her. Yes the most over used line. But the most brother thing to say to cheer her up. Or at least try.

the anchors in my heart cannot be for nothing, yet we still stand apart
It hadn't even occurred to Nenetl that someone might see her sorrow and respond to it. Although it was true that she would likely have tried to help out someone if she saw them sitting all alone and sad like that, it didn't register that someone would do that to her. Calli and Ezti would have, sure; but they had been her big brothers. That what family did: look out for one another. But her family was nowhere to be found and her big brothers were gone forever. No one came back from death, no matter what the priest back home had preached. Death was inescapable and it had stolen Nene's family from her.
Her throat ached from her stubborn refusal to break down and sob. She was afraid to blink the tears blurring her vision for fear they would course down her cheeks. She was frozen in a tableau of misery, perched on the stone rim of the fountain and heedless of the world around her.
Heedless, that is, until she saw movement through the veil of tears and something touched her forehead. She blinked, clearing her eyes and feeling the tears trail down her cheeks before she scrubbed them away with the back of her hand. The language was all wrong but the kind smile added to the tone and sentiment of the words was so familiar and familial that Nene couldn't choke back the hiccup of a sob that bubbled out of her.
She managed a tiny hint of a smile that wobbled and collapsed as all her self control crumbled. Hiding her face in her hands she sobbed softly, shoulders shaking. Muffled by her hands, voice thick with tears, she croaked out, "I'm sorry..."

Kazu looked at the young girl as she started to sob a bit and a he noticed a couple of tears flow down her soft cheeks. He just kept squatting in front of her and smiled at her. Kazu was just a good person in general and would try to help anyone that was so sad. Kazu was the type to always be smiling no matter what happened to him or what ever. He was just a positive person. So when he sees someone else down he kinda just has to cheer them up or try. "No need to be sorry." he softly said as he got up and sat beside her and just patted her shoulder. He looked around as people walked by. He kept patting her shoulder. "Let it out. You will feel better. Then we can get that frown into a giant smile yea." he chuckled to himself as he looked at her. He did wonder what was making her so down. Probably pretty bad if she was letting it out in a public place like this. But it was probably a touchy subject to be this sad. Kazu hated seeing people cry. Especially someone that reminded him of his litter sister as much as this girl did. And knowing his little sister if Kazu didn't help she would be mad. "I'm Kazuki. But most people call me Kazu. What's your name if you dont mind me asking?" he asked with a smile. Trying to just stay positive for the young child next to him. After all slumping down to be sad and trying to figure out what was wrong never worked. Just staying cheering always seemed to work.

the anchors in my heart cannot be for nothing, yet we still stand apart
Nene had tried to make friends here at this school; so far away and different from everything she had ever known. But it was so hard to do that, especially when trying to learn enough English to stay afloat in school. The casual vernacular and turns of phrase were another mess entirely and it left the poor girl floundering even at the best of times. And, it had to be mentioned, she had had some rather horrible luck with some of the people she had sought to befriend. So this unasked for, unexpected kindness from this older boy completely undid her. It was just all too much and here was someone trying to reassure her. In spite of herself, all the careful self-control she had been trying to hold onto crumbled.
Tears spilled down her cheeks faster than she could wipe them away, but her sobs had more or less subsided into the occasional hiccup. Kazuki. That was a different name for sure. But it wasn't a bad one by any stretch. Nenetl tried to smile back at him but her expression stayed that crumpled mess of sorrow and tears. In spite of that, though, she met his gaze and managed to croak, "I'm Nenetl." She made another attempt at a smile that wobbled into existence for less than a breath before fading. "Nene. I--" But he had said she didn't need to be sorry so she shook her head and pushed the urge down.
"Thank you, Kazu," she said softly, accent a bit thicker than usual with her mind so overwhelmed. All the same, it was clear enough. She scrubbed at her cheeks again, wiping away the tears that seemed to be slowing at least a little. She tried to smile again and this one lasted a little longer before melting under the weight of her tears.

Kazu watched the girl start to cry even more. He really didn't know what to do. I mean he had experience calming his younger sister down but that was his sister. This was something different. This felt like real pain, heartbreak, sorrow. What ever you call it, Kazu could almost feel the weight of her tears. He just rubbed her back as he heard her hiccups of pain. As he just sat there. He watched as people walked by with some odd looks at the pair. Which was mostly expected, and probably assumed Kazu did something to her. But Kazu didn't really care. His brotherly instinct took over and he just wanted to comfort the poor girl. As she seemed to calm down just a bit as she intruded her self as Nenetl he smiled at her. "Nice to meet you then..." as he paused and rubbed his head. "Well I wish it was under better circumstances of course." he chuckled to himself. He looked down at her. "So what has got this cute face all teared up and sad." he said poking her cheek trying to be a b it playful to see if that would make her laugh or at least smile more. Kazu has some weird ways to cheer up people. But sometimes they worked. So he was just trying to do what he has done in the past to see if it would work. It probably wouldn't but it would be worth a shot at least.

the anchors in my heart cannot be for nothing, yet we still stand apart
Having that unspoken permission to cry; that sympathy... It gave Nene a release she hadn't felt since the night everything had gone wrong. She had been coping mostly by avoiding thinking about everything and that only worked until a crack appeared in the wall she had created in her mind. Now the grief she had been so diligently holding back was bleeding out in a great wave. It was hard, and exhausting and painful, but Kazu's empathy and sympathy kept her afloat in the flood of emotions.
But now the torrent had subsided. Although her eyes were still teary, and her face all red and blotchy from crying, Nenetl was actually feeling better. Wrung out, and a bit hollow perhaps, but better nonetheless. This time, when she smiled at Kazuki, her expression wasn't so wobbly. She managed a genuine, if tired, smile and wiped away the last of the tracks her tears had left on her cheeks. She nodded, understanding the jist what he said first though "circumstance" completely eluded her befuddled brain at the moment. She got the picture and agreed.
The question and the poke to her cheek got a watery little chuckle out of her. She smiled again, a bit more bleakly this time, and shrugged. "My family," she said carefully, words measured out as if they cost something to say. And in a way they did. "Today is my brothers' birthday..." Her eyes blurred slightly but she forced them away, refusing to cry again. "They're gone though. They're gone," she repeated, "and I miss them..." She tried to shrug, as if she were tough enough to shoulder that grief without a problem but it was pretty obvious it was a very shoddy facade.

Kazu looked at the poor girl. As she whipped the reaming tears that fell down her face as Kazu just smiled patiently. He was honestly used to waiting for crying to stop so he could figure out what was wrong. He could thank his little sister for that. She tried to keep up with Kazu so much when they were kids that she would usually fail and get hurt. And Kazu was always the one to calm her down and just wait out the tears. He is kinda thankful of that at least. Cause it does come in handy every now and then.
Kazu sighed a bit after listing to Nene. He took a deep breath, he had no idea what it felt like to loose someone. So he had no idea what it was like for her. But he would still try his best either way. After all she was pretty adorable when she smiled. "I can't really relate to that." He started off as he paused and looked at her with a slight smile. "But I dont think they would want you to be sitting her crying you know." He paused again as he took a deep breath and stood up and out stretched his arms. "I think they would want you to be living your life to the fullest." He said as he just turned to her and that goofy smile on his face. As he squated back down to her level. "After all. I bet they are all in here." as he pointed to his chest where his heart was.

the anchors in my heart cannot be for nothing, yet we still stand apart
There was something about Kazu that reminded her of her brothers. She wasn't sure quite what it was, and she'd be hard pressed to put a word to it in any language, but it was a comforting sort of warmth and an understanding patience. It made her heart ache with their absence from her life but, at the same time, it was a comfort. Her world had shattered that night but it hadn't ended. Maybe, just maybe, she could rebuild a new family from the ashes of the old. Isn't that what they would have wanted? Wasn't family support and love the most important lesson their mother had taught them?
And then Kazu all but echoed her own thoughts. Tears stung Nene's eyes again even as she nodded, closing her eyes to stop the tears from falling. Blinking them away she nodded again and wiped the moisture from her lashes with a sad little smile. "Yeah," she agreed. "Yeah..." She took a sharp breath that wasn't quite a sniffle and swallowed the last of her tears. "They would. It just... is very hard when it hurts so much and sometimes to cry is..." She trailed off, searching for the word but then gave up and shrugged a little. Another small smile crept onto her face when Kazu pointed at his own heart and she felt the pressure of tears building again but stubbornly refused to start crying again. "Yeah," she said again almost in a whisper this time. "Yeah they are. Ezti and Calli and Mamí... and Taca..." Her voice cracked but she finished with, "And little Chipa. And maybe," she added in a strained and almost desperate voice. "Maybe the others are still okay?" She had to believe that at least some of her siblings had survived; had to hold onto that fragile hope.

Kazu looked at the poor girl and just sighed. As he reached out and patted the girl's head. "That's it. No more being sad or down." He paused as he reached down and picked the girl up to her feet to stand. As he just kept smiling at her with that big goofy smile of his. "We are going to get a big meal and then some ice cream all that crying and sadness has made me hungry. I bet you too." He chuckled to himself
As he took a couple steps in front of the girl and knelt down. "Here climb on. I'll give ya a piggy back ride all the way to town so we can go get some sweets and even buy you some sweets too. I've found that eating sweet things can be amazing when you feeling down so let's go" he said as he glanced back to look at her with that goofy smile still on his face.

Nenetl blinked up at Kazu in surprise, processing the change in approach rather belatedly. It reminded her so much of Necalli that she couldn't help the tears that sprung to her eyes even as she smiled up at him. "Okay," she agreed, wiping away the fresh tears. If she hadn't been so out of sorts she would have questioned that. What about money? She didn't have any money to her name. But Kazu's brotherly presence overrode that cautionary part of her brain. It was the most natural thing to agree with him. He had the right kind of warm, demanding, loving force of personality that made Nene feel... safe.
At the offer of the piggyback ride she couldn't help but giggle. A bit hesitantly she climbed up, wrapping her legs around the front of his chest and holding onto his shoulders.

Kazu smiled at the okay as she climbed up onto him as he felt her hands grip his shoulders as he stood up slowly and started to walk. As they have been walking, well he was walking while carrying her, for a bit he glanced back at her. "So since you are at this school I assume you have powers like the rest of us." He asked in a weird way that wasn't really a question, more of an observation. "I can talk to any animals. I've gotten pretty good at it recently being able to talk up to about five at once" he giggled as he pushed her up further onto his back as she was slipping a bit. "It's always funny seeing how the animals react when I speak to them for the first time and they freak out a bit" he chuckled again.
As they kept walking he looked at the town they were approaching. "So any request to where we get some food or is it my choice?" He paused as he stopped walking to take a break and glance back at her.

the anchors in my heart cannot be for nothing, yet we still stand apart
Riding on Kazu's back seemed like the most natural thing in the world. It felt good and right and proper and eased some of that aching void of desolate loneliness inside of her. He smelled different, but if she closed her eyes she would almost believe that one of her brothers was carrying her instead. Almost. And that was okay that the illusion wasn't perfect. She didn't want to cast Kazu in the role of one of her brothers. Kazu was Kazu and that was enough.
Nene hummed in agreement to the question that wasn't really a question, and giggled a little when Kazu told her how the animals got a bit freaked out the first time he spoke to them. She didn't blame them, really. If a giant, blundering thing were to suddenly talk to her she'd be pretty freaked out too! Kazu's power seemed a lot cooler than hers. She just started fires and weird stuff. Talking to animals would be so awesome!
She shifted a little on his back as he asked about where to eat. "Um... it's really up to you cause I can't afford anything..." Nene seemed to wilt a little.
