Kota let out a heavy sigh, pushing his hands deep into his pant pockets and walking around another fish tank.
Today was his off day, and he was bored. Typically when his boredom hit, he tried socializing with anyone he could grab his hands on, but it seemed as if the world was against him today. Not a single soul appeared interested in him during his usual walkabout on campus, despite him trying desperately to be funny and upbeat. Maybe it was his comedic approach he needed to work on? He thought cracking jokes would brighten the mood, but all it seemed to do was make others give him weird looks like he grew a second head. Or third.
He chuckled to himself. Nah, it couldn’t be his humor. He might be biased when he said this, but he thought he was hilarious!
And so, he found himself wandering through the city and eventually ending up at the aquarium. Fish were interesting to him; the fact that any fish could live and breathe underwater blew his mind. He knew there was science behind it and such, but the fact remained they lived in a different world, and that by itself fascinated him.
Pressing his hands up against the tank he currently stood in front of, he watched with wide blue eyes as a pufferfish swam his way. Grinning, he gave a quiet “Hey there, little fella” and tapped the glass with his finger, ultimately scaring away the poor fish and bringing disappointment. He vaguely heard an employee behind him say something along the lines of “Don’t tap the glass, sir!” but promptly ignored them, instead watching as a school of fish swam by his frontal view in fascination.

232 WORDS ▪ @dakota ▪ NOTES
Edmund walked slowly through the aquarium, pausing every so often to observe the fish. Brightly glowing jellyfish against black water, their illumination enhanced with changing LEDs; tiny silver fish traveling in schools, starfish at the bottoms of tanks. It was rather calming, watching them all float around, without a care in the world, while he only had a few hours before he would have to return back to the struggles of school. And math. And avoiding the students with massively insane scary powers. But for now, he could just look at the fishes and lets his annoying thoughts drift away like the water that surrounded the creatures. “Hey there, little fella.” Edmund jumped slightly at the sudden noise, and assuming the person was addressing him, he looked for the source of the voice. He found a boy close to him, entranced by a puffer fish and almost flat against the glass. So he had been talking to a fish... that made a lot more sense. At least he hadn't responded... that would have been embarassing. Edmund turned back to watching the fish himself, trying not to attract the attention of the other boy, but he found himself glancing back as the boy tapped on the glass, enchanted with the fish. It was endearing, and Edmund couldn't look away. God, that was creepy. But a little people watching never hurt anyone, did it...?

Kota smiled, pressing his nose up against the glass and rubbing affectionately. The fish were so cute, he couldn’t help himself! He knew most people wouldn’t react as strangely as he did, but then again most people weren’t him. Being the friendly and outgoing type, he’d always gotten along with both people and animals – fish, as he saw it, were no different. They were fascinating creatures that deserved his attention as much as the next person did…although he did want some company to socialize with, now that he thought of it.
Breathing out a sigh against the glass, he watched as the air he puffed out fogged against the fish tank. Blinking wide, innocent eyes, he began scribbling a doodle of a fish on the foggy glass when he noticed a dark image crowding his vision on the tank. Squinting, he realized the dark image was merely a person’s reflection gleaming off the fish tank, causing him to turn around in modest surprise.
Another boy stood quietly in the empty room amongst the fishes, his black hair and dark eyes making him easily distinguishable amongst the blues and whites of the room. No wonder Kota managed to spot his reflection on the tank so easily. He shook his head and brought up a smile across his features, judging the boy to be somewhere around his age by the looks of him.
“Hey,” Kota started, his smile bright against the dimly lit room. “I don’t normally talk to fish, just so you know. It’s just…weird that there’s no people around,” he explained, laughing awkwardly and scratching his cheek.
Turning back to face the tank, his blue eyes widened as he watched a brightly-colored fish swim by his vision. “They’re fascinating creatures, aren’t they? The only kind of animal that can breathe underwater – well, I guess there’s several different kinds that can, but you know what I mean.” He shot a friendly look over his shoulder toward the boy and asked politely, “So, are you from Aurora Academy too?”

440 WORDS ▪ @kota ▪ NOTES The other boy continued to press himself up against the glass, and Edmund continued watching him. Every time he tried to take his eyes away he got drawn back. Well, he was the only other patron in the room, Edmund tried to reason with himself. Usually his eyes darted from person to person, eventually settling back to his main focus. But with a single person, he was just... sharing his attention between the two main attractions. Wow, he was really overthinking this and it wasn't making him feel any less awkward, just gradually weirder and weirder. He shook his head gently and locked his eyes back on the fish. That was why he was here, after all, wasn't it? To watch the fish. But it was too late: the other boy had noticed him. Edmund kept his gaze focused on the tanks, though he could feel his cheeks growing hot as the boy turned his glance on him. See? Now he thinks you're a creep. But, to Edmund's surprise, the boy didn't snap at him or even acknowledge his weird staring. Was it possible he hadn't noticed? Well, he was sure to notice something now that Edmund's rapidly reddening face was betraying him. Damn his ridiculously pale skin and hyperactive blood vessels. Edmund looked back to the boy as he mentioned he wasn't in the habit of talking to fish, trying to make it seem a little less like he was waiting for the other to address him or something like that. He smiled as the boy continued off on a tangent about the fish. They were rather fascinating, being able to breathe underwater. It was so different from living on dry ground. "Yeah, I get it. But..." Edmund frowned as he found the flip side of that intrigue, "it's sad when you think about it, that their difference, their pretty colors and the fact that they aren't human, gets them locked in a tank for their entire lives." he cringed internally as the words exied his mouth, wondering what kind of impression he was giving off. A rather pessimistic one. Why couldn't he just act like a normal, not horribly depressing human being and, oh, not stare at random strangers? The boy asked if he went to Aurora, and Edmund made himself speak again. "Uh, yes, I do. I'm Edmund. Second year. Sorry, I must seem so weird." He ran a hand through his hair, pushing his fringe out of his eyes for a brief moment before it fell back into place in a haphazard, messy way that seemed to reflect the way he was carrying on this conversation.

Kota smiled at the other boy’s reddening skin. Despite the dimly lit room, his blush was easy to spot with his pale skin and contrasting dark hair. He wasn’t sure why the boy was blushing, whether it was from embarrassment or frustration he wasn’t sure either. They were just two guys hanging out in an aquarium, talking about fish. Surely there was nothing embarrassing or frustrating about that, was there?
When he responded to his query about the fish, giving a more depressing answer, Kota felt his smile turn down a notch. Glancing between the fish tank and the other boy, he rubbed his chin in thought. Yeah, it was sad that they were locked away. “But despite being stuck in a tank, there’s still a lot to be grateful for,” Kota mused, thinking out loud. “After all, they don’t have to worry about predators. And they’re with others of their kind, so they have families.” He turned to face the boy with a questioning look, eyebrow raised slightly. “You’re more of a pessimist, aren’t you? There’s nothing wrong with that, but I’m an optimist. I prefer to see the glass half-full, you know?”
As the boy introduced himself as Edmund, Kota held out a hand for him to shake. “Nice to meet you. You can call me Kota,” he introduced, smiling bright. “First year. And you’re not weird, you just think differently. I can appreciate that.”
Turning back to face the blue tank, he watched with wide eyes as another couple of fish swam by his vision. He had to stop getting distracted by these damn fish! He was probably the one coming across as weird; he could see it now – Edmund returning to school and reporting to everyone about the weirdo boy who likes to watch fish. By the time he made it back to campus, everyone would be calling him ‘fish boy.’
Then again, he seemed like the quirky type. Maybe he wouldn’t make fun of him. Kota wasn’t sure of him yet to make a solid opinion. All he knew was he was used to being bullied if it came down to it.
“So…” He turned back around to face Edmund, giving him a curious look. “What brings you to the aquarium? I mean, if you think fish shouldn’t be locked away I’d think you wouldn’t be here to look at them, right?” It was an ironic situation when he thought of it.

395 WORDS ▪ @kota ▪ NOTES With a tentative grin, Edmund took the hand of the other boy, who had introduced himself as Kota, giving him a quick, loose handshake. Wow, he didn't think Edmund was weird. That was surprising, considering Edmund's so far completely inept conversation. However, what skills Edmund lacked,it seemed Kota had in excess. His words shot off in a quickfire fashion, quite unlike Edmund's own speech, and he asked more questions and revealed more about himself in a minute or two than Edmund would usually do in an entire conversation, and just through a conversation about fish. It was different, and there was nothing wrong with that, but now Edmund had to try and provide answers for everything, show that he could keep up. "It's nice to meet you, Kota," Edmund started. "I, I don't really view myself as an optimist... but I'm not a pessimist for that matter. I don't really know why I said that about the fish... I mean, they are cared for, you're right. Maybe I'm just getting emotional over Finding Dory." He shrugged and kind of grimaced, only to notice that the other boy had gotten lost in the fish again. Edmund smiled and took the moment to take him-- Kota -- in, with the new information. He was probably a little younger than Edmund if he was a first year, but he still stood taller, even though he had a similarly young face. Edmund was used to being the shortest but it always annoyed him just the tiniest bit when younger people were larger than him. His internal thoughts and observances were cut short when Kota turned back around, seemingly remembering that he was, in fact, engaged in a conversation. He kind of reminded Edmund of a puppy, but in a good way. It was a nice quality, his ability to be mesmerised by such small things, insignificant in the grand scheme of life. Why was Edmund here to look at fish, anyway? He didn't have a real reason when it came down to it. Boredom, maybe. With a shrug, Edmund said, "I'm just here to get away from school for a little bit to clear my head. And I'm not really against aquariums or zoos, as long as they treat the animals well. I just kind of got a random gloomy thought. Like I said, it's probably because of Finding Dory."

When Edmund accepted the offered handshake, Kota barely got to squeeze his hand before the other boy quickly shook and separated their hands. He shouldn’t have been surprised. Edmund seemed like the reserved type that kept to himself, unlike Kota who made it his daily mission to make his way into other people’s lives. It didn’t bother him, though. Rather, it made him feel slightly sorry for the boy. He hoped he overcame his reserved nature – he seemed like a nice-enough guy.
Letting his arm drop back to his side, he listened as the boy made an awkward statement about being neither optimistic or pessimistic. Huh. That was strange. “Would you consider yourself a realist then?” he asked, rubbing his chin in thought. In all honesty, he should’ve known better than to push the subject. The two were basically strangers, aside from knowing each other’s names. He shouldn’t be trying to figure Edmund out, and yet he was compelled to do so.
At the mention of Finding Dory, Kota’s blue-green eyes lit up with excitement. “Ooh, so you saw the movie? Was it any good?!” he asked, a grin now forming across his features. He bounced from one foot to another with his newfound energy, showing a more child-like side of him. “I haven’t seen the movie yet, what with school and all. Now that I think of it, I haven’t been to the movies in a while. This is the first chance at a break that I’ve gotten. It’s my off day, and while I get them every week this is the first one where I have no work to do! Whew, finally! It’s like, do teachers have nothing better to do than to give us nonstop work? I don’t need to know what the square root of X is to know math. Geez!”
He shook his head at the thought, realizing at that moment he probably sounded like he was going on a tangent. When Edmund answered his previous question about being at the aquarium to get away from school, he felt he couldn’t agree more. That was honestly why Kota was here to begin with. “Random gloomy thought, huh,” he repeated, lips forming a straight line. “That’s no good. We need to get you thinking random happy thoughts! Here, look at this!” he exclaimed, turning back to the tank to reveal the previous pufferfish he’d been looking at before.
Puffing his cheeks out in a similar fashion, he turned and smiled at Edmund. “Doesn’t it just make you in a better mood, looking at a silly fish?” Taking in a deep breath, he puffed his cheeks out further to the point where they grew a tint of red, closing his eyes and trying to mimic looking like the fish. Peeking an eye slightly open, he hoped he was making a good impression and lightening the mood for Edmund. He seemed like he needed some cheering up.

257 WORDS ▪ @kota ▪ this is awful I'm sorry A realist, hmm? Edmund shrugged. He didn't really think that described him either, always being buried in some fantasy novel and preferring to fill his head with thoughts of those over true life. And he was rather idealistic, when it came down to it. But for now he just nodded, responding with a simple "I guess so." Kota had quickly moved onto another topic, easily redirected by mention of Finding Dory. Edmund couldn't help but smile as the other boy's face lit up and he began rambling about how he wanted to see it, but he couldn't get out because of school. "Here's a little secret," Edmund responded with a mock mischievous grin flitting across his face. "There's this little thing called illegally downloading movies in your dorm room so you never have to go outside. Completely changed my life." he crossed a hand over his heart for a brief moment, in a sort of "honest-to-god" gesture before he couldn't stay fake-serious anymore. It was just too ridiculous. His secretive facade cracked and he laughed. "But in all seriousness, netflix and online movie sites save my brain during exam season." Edmund's quickly improving mood only went up as Kota made an active effort to cheer him up, puffing his face out like a pufferfish. Edmund's chuckle quickly transformed into a snort as he saw the ridiculous face. He began clapping at the impression -- after all, it was pretty good. He calmed his laugh for a moment so that he could say, "You should do fish impressions professionally."

Edmund shrugged at his comment of being a realist, giving a noncommittal-looking nod and small agreement in return. That was okay. Kota wouldn’t push the subject any further. He felt like he was already going beyond what a normal person would do in a situation like this: meeting someone for the first time. The two were still strangers, and yet he’d managed to pick at the wall Edmund seemed to have constructed around himself the way most reserved people do. In a way he felt proud that he accomplished something between the two, despite the fact that he hardly knew the guy. There was just something about him that seemed different, and that was something Kota wanted to be a part of.
On top of that, he genuinely enjoyed having conversations with people.
And the attention. He liked that, too.
But he digressed. At the mention of not being able to see a certain popular movie, Edmund grinned and gave him a tip about illegally downloading movies before laughing it off and suggesting Netflix. Kota smiled; there goes that wall again, tumbling down and down. He was glad he could see the boy laugh, and when he did the impression of a pufferfish he laughed even harder. Good to see he had some humor. At least the two were beginning to find common ground.
“You should do fish impressions professionally,” he heard Edmund say.
“Aw shucks, I missed my calling,” Kota grinned, dropping his puffy expression to laugh alongside him. He couldn’t remember the last time he had this much fun – especially in a dim place like the aquarium. Kota liked to bring out the happy side of others, though, and was glad he managed to pull it off at a place like this.
As his laughter died down, he turned back to face the tank once more and motioned for Edmund to stand beside him, watching the fish swim across his field of vision. “So tell me, what’s your favorite fish?” Before Edmund could respond, he quickly added, “Lame question, I know, but think of it like an impromptu personality test. Any answer you give will reveal something about yourself.” He smiled at the thought, thinking of his pufferfish impression and what that must’ve said about himself.

298 WORDS ▪ @kota ▪ NOTES Edmund had shifted his attention back to the tanks when the other boy posed a question to him. What was his favorite fish? Put on the spot, Edmund's mind completely blanked and he stared confused at Kota for a good twenty second before he could even say anything. And even then, all that escaped his lips was an "uhhh..." He was in an aquarium, for god's sake, why couldn't he think of any fish? He glanced briefly at the walls of fish before something came back to his mind. "Well, they aren't technically fish, but I really like octopi. They have cool coloring and they're incredibly smart and just generally awesome." He paused for a minute, trying to think of an actual fish. "Betta fish are cool, too, even though they're more pet fish than aquarium fish. The blue ones, though, not the red ones." Edmund didn't own any pets, nor had he ever, but he thought it would be cool to have a betta. Never a goldfish; they died too easily. A hamster, too, might be cute, but that was another he worried about dying on him in six months or so. He knew getting a short-living pet would just make him feel bad that he couldn't have done more for it in the short time it had. "What about you, what's your favorite fish?" He asked, turning the question back to the one who had asked it originally. "I'm kind of assuming it's a puffer fish, but you could prove me wrong." He shrugged with a smile, trying to bring himself back from the darker thoughts in his head. He wasn't a pessimist, he'd said. Than why did it seem now that he was so gloomy in the presence of another kid who was so bright?

Kota looked over toward Edmund, waiting patiently for his reply. The boy seemed a bit flustered at first, unable to answer as he thought to himself. That was okay. Kota could wait and stare at fish all day. It wasn’t that he had a particular thing for fish – something he was worried Edmund might start to think is a thing – but, rather, he found them interesting. And anything he found interesting could occupy his mind for hours.
When Edmund finally gave an answer, Kota realized he wasn’t too surprised. It made sense. “I should’ve guessed you’d pick something like an octopus. They symbolize intelligence and mystery, among several other things. Did you know they camouflage themselves?” He laughed. “At least, that’s what the info card read.”
Edmund asked Kota the same question in return, and he smiled at the puffer fish remark. “Nah, they’re not my favorite. Although I do like them, mostly because they make people smile. Is that corny?” He tilted his head, pondering for a moment before coming up with his answer.
“I guess if I had to pick one, it would be a seahorse. They’re unique creatures, and they basically do their own thing. There’s nothing else quite like them. At least, not that I know of.” Kota scratched the back of his head, offering a cheesy grin. “I’m certainly no expert on fish, let me tell you that!”

200 WORDS ▪ @kota ▪ I want them to be friends too so bad omg but edmund is such a mess lol Edmund listened as Kota analyzed his choice of octopus as his favorite "fish," noting their camouflage and intelligence. Was that supposed to reflect him? After all, when Kota had putt him on the spot with the question, he'd called it an impromptu personality test of sorts. Well, being an intelligent, if quick to fade to the background, creature wasn't exactly the worst comparison. What if Edmund had chosen something like... say, an angler or blob fish? He laughed silently at the thought. The other boy mentioned his own affinity for seahorses, and Edmund tried to think of some of that creature's traits that could compare to Kota, but only one came to mind. Edmund could feel a slight heat rising to his cheeks, but he brushed it off with a laugh. "I was trying to think of some insightful quip about seahorses to make me seem like a mysterious, interesting person, but literally the only thing I can think of is that the male seahorses carry babies. That's unique, at least." God, Kota definitely brought out the weirdest in him, if a more cheerful side. Starting with funny faces mimicking fish, to tips on pirating movies, to stupid seahorse trivia.

Kota tilted his head, searching the room for other people but finding none. Where was everyone? Surely they weren’t the only people visiting the aquarium. He tried racking his brain to remember if he’d seen anyone else, but the only ones that came to mind were employees he’d spotted here and there earlier.
His ears perked up when Edmund made the comment about trying to recall seahorse facts, ultimately saying the one thing Kota didn’t want to hear: “male seahorses carry babies.” Great. So his favorite fish was comparable to a female. He frowned at the thought, feeling himself grow depressed. The last thing he needed was to be compared to a girl, yet again. How many times had this happened in the course of a couple weeks? Three?
Feeling an imaginary rain cloud forming over his golden head, Kota replied with a lower, gloomier tone. “That’s just great,” he sighed. “Another reason to confuse me for a girl. That’s been happening way too much lately.” He didn’t mean to bring Edmund down after he spent so much time bringing him up, but he couldn’t help himself. He’d been mistaken for a girl twice within a short amount of time – hearing another comparison was bound to make him upset.

247 WORDS ▪ @kota ▪ NOTES Kota practically deflated at Edmund's words. Crap, what had he said wrong? He stood there, awkwardly, unsure of how to comfort the other boy until he spoke. So he was uncomfortable with feminine comparison... Edmund couldn't quite understand, because he'd gotten the comparison a few times and honestly had no reaction, but he could still see that it was making Kota uncomfortable and he had to fix it somehow. "I'm sorry," he started. "I didn't realize. I didn't mean anything by that, I just thought it was a funny fact. If it makes you feel better, I've gotten compared to a girl loads of times and at the very least you're taller than me, and younger. You'll probably grow out of it." Now he just felt like he was making it worse... "Not that I think you look like a girl, I promise!" The two had completely switched roles and Edmund was completely out of his element. He was usually the one being comforted, not the comforter. What was he supposed to do, give the other boy a juice box? Actually, that probably wouldn't be a bad idea. He had one with him, in his backpack, that he'd been given a day or two ago. He kneeled down on the ground to fish it out. It was slightly crushed, but nothing was leaking and the straw was covered and intact. He held it out to Kota, w smile forming on his face. "Accept this as an apology?"

Kota looked up, startled, as Edmund went on a tangent to make him feel better. The dark-haired boy seemed out of his element, painfully so, and the blonde couldn’t help but smile at that. At least he was trying. Meanwhile those other two – both ones that mistakenly called him a girl – did little for an apology, let alone trying to make him feel better about himself. Edmund hardly knew him. Why was he trying so hard to make him feel better?
Kota held back a laugh, realizing the irony of the situation. Just moments before he’d been doing the exact same thing for Edmund and hadn’t thought twice about it. It was just in his nature. Perhaps, deep down, all Edmund wanted was for others to like him. To appreciate him. Didn’t everybody want a little bit of that? Kota knew he certainly did.
Shaking his head at the apology, Kota forced a smile. “Nah, that’s okay. The truth is, I thought I already outgrew that stage, but lately that doesn’t seem to be the case.” Watching a fish swim by, he wondered if its gender was often mistaken as well. Probably. They all looked the same.
Suddenly Edmund crouched on the ground, one hand rustling around the contents of his bag. Kota raised a brow at his strange behavior, about to ask him what he was doing before his thoughts were interrupted by a juice box held out before him, Edmund staring up at him with wide innocent eyes and an apologetic smile. Kota couldn’t help himself: he let out a small chuckle. The entire scene was like something in an anime. It was just too bizarre.
“Sure,” he grinned, suddenly feeling much better about himself. Reaching down to grab the juice box from Edmund, Kota reached behind him and undid the zipper to his own bag, placing it inside and zipping the material closed once more. Looking back at Edmund, he smiled down at his bag still left in the open. “What else you got inside? Snacks, too?” he joked.
