Emery looked around the cafeteria like a deer caught in headlights.
It was like the first day of school all over again – if you consider school to have extraordinary students with extraordinary abilities. She still couldn’t wrap her mind around that; there were other people like her. Other people also very much not like her, but all the same she was amongst her people. At least, that was what she was told. This is her people now, whether she liked it or not.
Of course, she had no opinions on anyone since she had yet to talk to others. It wasn’t as if she were being antisocial. She had to cut herself some slack – it was a lot to take in. The fact that there were classes revolved around elemental manipulation, something she assumed she was the only one to have, blew her mind.
Looking around the cafeteria once more, she decided to order a simple coffee at one of the stands. Emery vaguely considered eating, but chose against it once she felt her stomach doing flips at the sight of everyone. Not only that, but her senses were going off the charts with the midday traffic of lunchtime. She felt slightly overwhelmed.
As if her day couldn’t get any more stressful, Emery dropped her coffee as soon as it was handed to her. Thankfully only a few spots of coffee splattered on her legs, but at the sound of everyone in line groaning at her clumsiness she was quick to offer a quiet apology and began racing for napkins to fix her mess.

When you're screaming out But you can't make a sound You know It's only a dream
Cause nothing is as bad as you think Even when you're pulling at the seams When the lights go out you still got me
It was an average day at lunch, and his ears twitched above his head, nervously listening for his ever present nightmare. "Luka. Calm down, gods. It's not like he's gonna show his face if I'm with you right? Now go get your damn tea so we can get out of this hell hole, yeah?" Of course he nodded and scurried off towards the coffee line. It didn't exactly help his nervousness being alone, but his albino companion had decided to go pay for their food while he was getting their drinks. Of course, he spotted the bully coming into the area and hid behind a taller student, not that he was paying any attention until she dropped her coffee. Well, that would draw attention for sure. But still, he carefully watched the albino taking care of his problem and let out a soft sigh of relief, deciding to help the girl with her spill. The young looking feline boy grabbed some napkins and crouched down to help the girl clean up the mess, but being the natural clutz that he was, he bonked his head right into hers and flopped backwards on his butt, rubbing his forehead. Emery wasn’t having the best luck today.
As she quickly grabbed a handful of napkins and bent down to clean the mess, she noticed another boy among the line of students following her actions to help. It was odd, really; usually she found herself on the other end, being the helper rather than being the helped. She wasn’t sure how to feel about that. Part of her heart swelled at the compassion, and another part – the more obsessive part – screamed at her for being incompetent and causing a mess for someone else to clean.
Opening her mouth to insist on him not helping her, she was abruptly silenced by a swift bonk to the head from the other boy. Falling over in a similar fashion to him, she rubbed her head and groaned at the pain, already feeling a swelling spot where she had been headbutted.
“Ah! Sorry!”
She looked up at the sound of the boy’s voice and quickly answered with her own, keeping her tone apologetic and polite. “No, no, it’s my fault. I’m sorry for being in the way. Are you alright?” Emery glanced around to notice their scuffle had caused the people in line for coffee to grow more annoyed at the outburst. Automatically, she reached for the napkins and dabbed at the few spots on her legs before cleaning the mess on the floor.

"Yeah! I'm fine! Heheh. Just a bit clumsy is all!" Of course it wasn't a lie, he did often find himself tripping over flat surfaces or air. At the grumbling of the coffee line, he simply stood up and looked at them, and most of them were quiet, and the ones that weren't were quickly whispered to. As much as he liked to keep himself a secret, being infamous kind of came in handy from time to time. He then turned back and crouched back down to help her lean up whatever was left, then offered his hand to help her back up. But he looked towards the person at the counter who was holding out a cup for him to take. "And one of whatever she had too please. Oh! Right.. Amos will want a drink uhh... A smoothie too please. Thanks." He turned back to the girl and smiled a bit. "You seem kinda new here hmm?" Of course, that worked out for him in the long run, because that meant she had absolutely no idea who he was. So, he simply held out his hand again for her to shake in introduction if she so wanted to. "I'm Luka. Nice to meet you." He was such a friendly and polite face. "Mister de'Enguarde? Your order?" "Ah!" Of course he spun around and grabbed the cup of coffee and handed it to the girl before grabbing the smoothie and holding his arm out in a gentlemanly fashion should she want to loop her own through his. “Yeah! I’m fine! Heheh. Just a bit clumsy is all!”
Emery was quick to shake her head in response. “You’re not the one that spilled your drink all over the place. I’m really sorry about that.” She felt heat rise to her cheeks at the thought, unable to stop herself from apologizing over and over again. God, was she embarrassed. On top of that, everyone was staring right at her and her clumsy form.
As if he read her mind, the other boy stood up and gave a look to the others in line, quickly silencing them. She sat on the ground in awe; he couldn’t have been taller than her – probably an inch or two shorter, in fact – and yet he managed to silence everyone with nothing but a single look. Was he a hall monitor or something? Possibly a teacher’s aide? Whatever his status or reputation, it clearly wasn’t something others wanted to mess with.
When he turned to order her drink for her once more, she felt the need to turn that down but was interrupted by him asking if she was new. “Ah. Yes. Is it that obvious?” Emery asked, giving a small, embarrassed smile. He held out his hand and introduced himself, something she was quick to accept and grasp onto so she could hoist herself off the floor. Standing beside the boy – Luka – she confirmed her suspicions: she was taller than him, just barely.
“My name’s Emery,” she replied, shaking his hand briefly before letting go. As he handed her the new coffee, she mustered out a small “Thank you” before he held his arm out. She blinked, staring at the offer. It was awfully courteous of him to act this way, especially to someone who just spilled coffee, made the line longer for students waiting for her to clean up, and bumped into his head. Granted that last part wasn’t her fault, but she would still blame herself regardless.
She reached for his arm before hesitating, adding softly, “Are you sure? I wouldn’t want you to have to sit with someone like me. I’m nobody.” Her self-loathing was beginning to show, but she couldn’t help herself. He clearly seemed like a somebody, at least to these people.

A soft smile greeted her question and he looped his arm with hers. He probably would have taken her hand if his hadn't been full. "No worries. I'm not really much of an anybody around here either. Just someone for certain upperclassmen to pick on..." He nodded towards the aqua haired nightmare and the albino delivering a swift punch to his gut before walking over to join them. Luka picked a small table towards the back near a window, setting his drinks down before pulling out a seat for the young lady. The albino walked up and placed a tray of food on the table and glanced between the two and raised an eyebrow. "And here I thought you had a thing for older men." Luka made a bit of a face and stuck his tongue out as the albino flopped into a chair. "She's new. I figured that she could eat with us. Unless that bothers your antisocial standards." He shook his head a bit as Luka set a smoothie in front of him. "As long as you keep paying for my lunch, I don't really have say in what you do." The cat boy rolled his eyes before taking his own seat. "Emery, this is Amos. He's a bit of a pain in the ass when he wants to be, but as tough as he acts, he's a fairly decent person. But otherwise, just ignore him." Amos snorted a bit and handed out food. "Kam not joining us today?" "He and Adrian are off doing who knows what." Amos muttered. "Still got enough food for the both of them though, so maybe it's a good thing you picked up a stray." "Don't be a jerk." Luka sighed and shook his head, handing over a plate of food to the girl. "Normally we have more people here but. I guess they're busy. So if you're hungry, feel free to eat their portions." Though he didn't really want to think of what the hell those two could possibly be up to. "So. Enjoying your time here so far? I know it seems like a little much. But you'll get used to it I'm sure." 364 Words ☪ @emery ☪ Blah Notes [googlefont=Philosopher][googlefont=Pattaya][googlefont=Lobster Two]

As Luka looped his arm around hers, Emery glanced over in the direction he nodded in, explaining how he was picked on by a certain upperclassman that was currently getting punched in his gut. Startled, she jumped slightly at the sight and was shocked that no teachers intervened. What kind of a school was this?!
While she placed her coffee down on the small table the two arrived at, she noticed the boy who punched said upperclassman mere moments before walking toward the two and taking a seat as if he owned their table. Clearly from their conversation, Luka was friends with this boy, but nevertheless Emery found herself nervous around him. Something was off about him – aside from picking a fight with upperclassmen. She didn’t get along well with conflict; in fact, she avoided it like the plague. But leaving now would cause a whole new conflict of its own with Luka, so she took a seat at the table and waited to speak her turn with a calm expression.
When the albino boy – Amos, as Luka introduced him – hinted at offering some of their food and Luka actually gave her a plate, she was quick to shake her head in response. “Oh no, that’s alright. I’m…on a diet.” Not a good cover, but she honestly didn’t feel like eating now. She was still recovering mentally from that embarrassing fiasco.
“So. Enjoying your time here so far? I know it seems like a little much. But you’ll get used to it I’m sure.”
“Yeah, it’s a lot to take in,” she nodded. “I’m not used to a place like this. Learning about all these extraordinary abilities – learning that I’m not the only one. It’s…incredible.” Realizing she was probably being too honest, Emery felt herself blush and quickly shook her head once more. “Sorry, I’m talking too much. How about you two? How did you meet exactly?”
That was certainly the million-dollar question. They seemed like complete opposites.

Of course, Amos raised an eyebrow at the whole, on a diet thing, scoffing a bit and shaking his head. But Luka shushed him. "Oh don't worry! You're fine! Talk as much as you'd like, honestly, we're used to it." Luka waved his hand a bit and Amos nodded in agreement. At least they agreed on something. The smaller male exchanged glances with the albino who shrugged, before he sighed. Well, if the girl really wanted to know, he guessed he could tell her. "He saved my life." Luka sat back and took a sip of his tea, eating a fry or two from the tray. "The person you saw him punch earlier... He's my worst enemy, I swear. I'm not really sure why he goes after me, but I just seem to have a target on my back." He paused and took another sip of tea. "One day, I was trying to eat lunch up on the roof like I usually did, and Rishe comes out of no where and beats the hell out of me. I don't really remember what.. happened..." The albino sighed and sat forward a bit in his chair. "He knocked your tiny ass out and picked you up. I had been minding my own damn business, but really I hate seeing people getting picked on like that. So I was gonna do something about it when Rishe dangled the poor thing over the edge of the fence on the roof." Amos pointed up like it was up there. "So he hangs Luka up on the fence by his shirt and I beat the crap out of him. Managed to get Luka down before he fell." "Woke up in the nurses office with this guy's bloody face next to me. I thought he saved me because of who I am. But he had no idea at the time. He just saved me because he felt it was the right thing to do. Ever since he's been guarding me at lunch and sometimes between classes if his work load isn't too heavy." "Hopefully that asshole will graduate this year and we'll be free of him." Luka couldn't really disagree with that comment. "But he's probably too fucking stupid." 372 Words ☪ @emery ☪ Blah Notes [googlefont=Philosopher][googlefont=Pattaya][googlefont=Lobster Two]

“He saved my life.”
That peaked her interest. Folding her arms over one another on the table, Emery sat quietly and listened to Luka tell his story of how the two met, shaking her head at the appropriate parts and frowning as she heard the troubles he’s had. Mumbling a “That’s terrible”, her attention switched to Amos as he continued the rest of the story, her eyes widening in response to his tale. She felt a shiver go down her spine; no one should have to go through something like that. If she were placed in a situation similar…if she had to face physical conflict…she shook her head at the thought.
“Wow,” she whispered once they finished their story. Running a hand through her reddish-brown hair, Emery furrowed her brows and looked between the two, explaining after a thoughtful pause, “Well, at least you two have each other. I believe everything happens for a reason.” She thought of her mother for a moment, cringing, before quickly adding, “Well, most things.”
Wait a second…
She backtracked the conversation, playing it in her head before realizing the one thing that stood out. Turning in her chair to face Luka, she replied thoughtfully, “Hold on. You said you thought he saved you because of who you are. What does that mean?” Realizing she spoke before thinking, realizing this might cause conflict, her eyes widened as she quickly shook her head. “I’m sorry, it’s not my place. Forget I said anything.”

Luka shook his head and smiled a bit. "Oh, it's fine. You'll probably hear it from someone someday, so why not me, right?" Amos just shook his head and busied himself with eating his lunch. "I figured that he saved me because I'm the principal's son. Her oldest. I'm the heir to the school, or at least, the campus." "Spoiled brat." Amos muttered, but of course Luka knew he was joking. "You wish. Because then you'd have a reason to hate me." The smaller feline male smiled and once more stuck his tongue out at the albino. "Got me there." "But my lineage isn't important to me. I do try to hide it, but most people know now since my younger siblings started this year." Amos groaned as Luka mentioned his siblings, causing him to smile a bit. It was always wonderful knowing they tormented the poor albino so much. "And they like to talk. I've managed most of my school career here without anyone knowing. And then those two start and tell absolutely everyone." 175 Words ☪ @emery ☪ Blah Notes [googlefont=Philosopher][googlefont=Pattaya][googlefont=Lobster Two]

Emery smiled at the two’s banter, taking a small sip of her coffee as she listened quietly. It was interesting to find out Luka was the principal’s son, but what interested her more was his connection with Amos. The two were obviously close, and she felt a sting of jealousy at the thought. She’d never been that close with someone before; acquaintances, sure, but she typically wasn’t impressive enough to gain a relationship any higher than classmate.
It was her own fault, really. She was too much of a people-pleaser to have an actual personality others like.
Placing her coffee back on the table, Emery shook her head at her typical negative thoughts and turned her attention once more to her companions sitting around her. “So you have siblings. That must be nice to go to the same school,” she replied, nodding her head matter-of-factly. She thought to herself for a moment before adding, “I should probably ask if you’re taking any of my classes. I’m a second year, but I have to admit one of the more nerve-wreaking classes I’m taking is the one I need to learn the most: pyrokinesis.” Her eyes widened a split-second, realizing that ability might make them nervous.
“I mean, not that it should be a surprise. No, I mean, I’m not the only one. No wait, that’s wrong.” She frowned, trying to reel her conversation back. “What I mean is…I have it under control,” she finished lamely, deadpanning at her embarrassing words.

When you're screaming out But you can't make a sound You know It's only a dream
Cause nothing is as bad as you think Even when you're pulling at the seams When the lights go out you still got me
The small feline male made some sort of sheepish smile at the thought of his siblings attending the same school as him. Honestly, it had been much more of a pain in the ass since they had started here. But the girl didn't need to know that. "Well, classes around here are usually by year, except the electives and magic classes. I'm a third year, and Amos here is a first." The albino just continued to quietly eat his food, giving some small nod of acknowledgement. Amos winced a bit and looked away the more nervous the girl seemed to get, making some sort of grumbling noise. Luka just waved it off a bit. "Pyrokinesis hmm? One of the others that usually sits with us... His older brother teaches that class." He smiled a bit and shook his head. "Neither of us has any elemental magic like that though. Though.. We probably could in our own little ways. My magic is mostly used for protection and Amos..." Luka made a bit of a face as the albino glared at him. "Well. He sees emotions. I imagine it can give him quite a headache." "You have no idea." "As for me... I can do anything if I study hard enough. And I can turn into things, like a cat for example." 220 Words ☪ @emery ☪ Blah Notes [googlefont=Philosopher][googlefont=Pattaya][googlefont=Lobster Two]

Emery’s eyes widened a touch at Luka’s words, brows raised at the sound of his friend’s older brother teaching. It seemed the more she learned about this pair, the more she learned of their several connections around the school.
Wincing a bit when she heard of Amos’ ability, she gave him a quick apologetic look – Emery was sure her nervous manner moments before wasn’t the best emotions to feel from another.
“And I can turn into things, like a cat for example.”
She nodded at his last words, taking another sip of her coffee. That wasn’t too surprising, oddly enough. Even though she was new, she’d been around enough and heard enough to know there were shifters in the school. That talent certainly peaked her interests, but it didn’t surprise her. “So you can turn into multiple animals? You’re not just limited to one?” she asked, faintly remembering certain fantasy books she’d read in the past saying shifters typically turn into a single animal.
Shifting her eyes in the albino’s direction, feeling a tug of guilt for not involving him, she decided to include him in their conversation. “I can understand how you feel. About headaches from sensing others, that is,” she explained to Amos. “My other ability, if you can call it that, is sensing another’s presence. I don’t have to see or hear them to know they’re there. And right now, in this crowded cafeteria, I feel a bit overwhelmed. Actually,” she paused, rubbing the back of her neck, “that’s part of the reason I spilled my coffee earlier.”
