POWER DESCRIPTIONS
Transference - Carlisle first stumbled across his ability during his teens through what might have been a worthy 'save the cat' moment. A few of the neighbourhood kids thought it would be fun to play with matches in the hay barn, far from their parents supervision. The situation ended as one might expect, with the barn going up in flames. The firemen were the first to arrive on scene, and the children were quickly evacuated. But, no one seemed too concerned about the smokey gray barn cat, stuck in the hay loft.
Benner had made the decision without thinking, diving into the flaming barn before reason could suggest it was a bad idea. Through the smoke and growing flames, he quickly located Ol' Smokey. However, when he picked the cat up, cradling it in his chest like any hero would, Carlisle felt like he got hit by a train - not your cute little blue steam locomotive named Thomas, but maybe one of those double-decker high-speed passenger trains.
He was never able to explain the experience in a way his parents or anyone seemed to ever understand, only that it felt like he was being wrenched away from the only comfort and love he'd ever known. Carlisle would later come to realize that what he'd felt was the cat's most traumatic memory, being taken away from its mother.
For months following the 'cat incident', teen-Benner could be away from his mother's side for no more than a moment before he began to panic. He couldn't stifle the fear that one day his mom just might not be there. The psychiatrist and family counselor pegged it as some form of anxiety, but his parents were a little hesitant to accept their diagnosis right away. Their son's condition seemed to have sprung up out of nowhere, and there appeared to be no events connected to his anxiety.
After much coddling from his mom and a few trips to see the counselor at his old school, Carlisle slowly began to recollect himself. He still had odd experiences when he touched others, but nothing near as bad as what he had experienced. It was his Volleyball coach and Hinan academy that had recognized his ability.
Carlisle is able to transfer raw trauma from one individual onto himself.
Burden Bearing (Transference) Ability Details:
- This ability activated by physical touch transfers the worst emotional and/or psychological trauma from the victim onto Carlisle. His ability can only be used once as it immediately latches onto the worst trauma that person has suffered and after it has been used on them, they become immune to Benner's 'Transference' touch.
- The person touched will in most cases retain their memory of the event, however, any of the trauma or fear/pain associated with it is gone. It's like remembering something that might have happened to someone else.
- This ability requires skin on skin contact to work, and if contact is broken during the process, the trauma becomes a 'shared' burden, where it is now carried by Carlisle and the one who carried it initially.
Terrakinesis - Carlisle's parents had never known anything magical in their lifetime, and when Carlisle's sand manipulation stumbled into their lives, it came as a surprise that rocked their world. It started like you might expect, building a sand castle with mom and dad, and a temper tantrum that may have gone a little too far.
The mini sandstorm the little boy generated did more than decimate the beach, it left itty bits of sand in places it should never be. Unable to handle the situation, his parents told him to hide his ability, to never use it.
But when that dropped their son into a steadfast depression, they found other ways to cope with this gift. Eventually, the gritty taste of sand in everything they ate, and random boughs of sand that carpeted the floors was an everyday occurrence in the Benner household. However, it soon became apparent his ability relied too heavily on his emotions. After learning about the death of a close childhood friend, another devastating sandstorm nearly demolished the Benner's house entirely.
Soon after the incident, Carlisle's parents began looking for help elsewhere. When his parents first sent him to Hinan, and Academy for gifted students, Carlisle was rather skeptical. He thought he was unteachable and his gift was just reasonable. That, and the boy had no desire to leave his parents behind to go to some strange place full of weird children. However it was at Hinan Carlisle was able to get a better grip on his ability, and even came to enjoy it.
Terrakinesis (Sand only) Ability Details:
- The ability to manipulate sand (bend it at will, and multiply it).
- Can create stellar sand palaces that are completely livable if you don't mind sharing it with a few other sand-burrowing creatures.
- Give one a distinct advantage in Beach Volleyball
- Carlisle can't make sand, but he can manipulate or multiply it. The man always has a small bag or box of sand hidden somewhere in his clothes or personal belongings.
- Carlisle is able to manipulate sand to mimic certain forms or condense it to create a sort of shield or impenetrable object. Because sand is composed of fine, minuscule grains, Carlisle is usually only able to manipulate moderate amounts of sand or sand that is relatively close to him. Since his incident in the kitchen many years ago, Carlisle is able to create controlled sandstorms or sand tornadoes.

APPEARANCE
Carlisle stands a little taller than six feet, equipped with a well-muscled body he earned from his (non-existant) pro-volleyball career. In truth, the man attends the gym at least three times a week, and between his night-time jogs and running around on 'gentlemanly' errands, Carlisle has made himself into a rather strapping young man....not like you would know.
Benner's chiseled bod is always concealed by what the man deems 'modest attire'. Carlisle knows he's good looking (he takes after his mum after all,) but he's not the least bit interested in being your eye candy. He pays very little attention to what clothes and colors compliment him, instead dressing in whatever he can hide inside. This usually consists of an hoodie two sizes too big, and baggy jeans - when he's not required to wear his teacher's uniform, that is. Regardless of the task, day, or season, Carlisle always wears a pair of dark, velvet gloves to prevent his Transference ability to resurface.
Carlisle's hair is a dark color that often appears to be some indistinguishable shade of blue. Ask him as many times as you like and he'll tell you it's natural, but the dark, almost black roots that make their appearance every now and gain might say otherwise. His eyes a piercing pale blue that often gives him a rather serious demeanor.

PERSONALITY
Carlisle was raised a proper gentleman, and when I say 'proper' I mean not only will he hold the door for you and carry your things, but he'll rise to greet you whenver you enter the room, and give you his jacket even if he knows he might never see the thing again. This man is beyond what some might call chivalrous, giving his full attention not only to the women he encounters, but the men as well. Benner seems to take it upon himself to ensure that everyone is well cared for and cares for others well.
The man is curteous and very considerate towards others, regardless of social standing. He demonstrates a rather warm and approachable aura even towards his students and people he doesn't know. For Carlisle, relationships come first. Nothing interests or attracts him more than getting to know someone. He's not interested in 'fixing' you and sweeping all your drama under the rug, but that's not to say he won't try to charm you or make you laugh if you're having a bad day.
Whether you're an old friend, a stranger or a student, this goof ball is incredibly generous with both his time and his resources. This tends to back-fire most of the time as the man intentionally (and more often unintentionally) allows himself to be used by others who have something to gain from him. This isn't to say he's a pushover, but the man is incredibly lax when it comes to giving up his own things.
So why isn't Carlisle Benner the perfect gentleman? Well, in short - he's about as honest as any compulsive liar you might know. They might be white lies, as tiny as his sports adventures, or trips into the woods, but Benner's far-fetched and overzealous tales can make him come across as a little cocky, and when I say 'a little'...I mean a lot. When surrounded by his male peers Carlisle acts like a teenaged boy with enough egotistical confidence to make him both attractive and unbelievablynear-sighted.
Benner can also rub you the wrong way if you like begin right, because he thinks he's always right. While the man is always open to class debates and conversation that reflect learning, there is one area in life that is non-disputable: 'How to Treat a Lady'. Carlisle can turn the Pythagoras theorem into a mathematical device to determine the quality of heterosexual relationships, where sides 'a' and 'b' of the triangle are the time and effort put into creating an air of romance, and the hypotenuse (side c) is the depth of the relationship.
Don't underestimate him on his quest to turn you into a gentleman either, this man is driven, and he will turn that jerk from your P.E class into a lady killer, and you'll never see it coming.
In his personal life, Carlisle is a different sort of clumsy. The man has no idea how to talk about himself or share his personal space with others. His inexperience is likely caused by the amount of time he spends doting on others and communicating their feelings, without giving so much thought to his own.
When left alone for long periods of time, Benner can get pretty anxious. People are his life, and if the man isn't spending time with someone, he's probably asleep...or dead.

BIOGRAPHY
For the first few decades of his existance, Carlisle lived an entirely 'normal' life. Before a year ago, the most exciting thing that had ever happened to him was when he was five years old. He got lucky enough to sit in the back of a police car and fire truck in the same day...he still has the picture to prove it. Carlisle suffered happily through his parents' affectionate marriage and they were both great examples to him.
As an only child, he was subject to all of their affection and adoration. He didn't mind, though. They taught him so much. His mother taught him to respect women and to appreciate their needs and their beauty. His father taught him how to be a man, how to stand up for himself, and how important it was to give back not only to the generation before you but the one after you as well.
When Carlisle began to develop the abilities that would make him a meta-human, his parents were always there to support him, despite the growing complications his powers brought. Their even keel nature made his life feel normal, even when his unnatural abilities should have made it anything but.
A year after the 'cat incident', Carlisle continued going to school at Hinan, and Academy for Gifted students like himself. While Carlisle had been skeptical at first, he grew to love the place almost more than any other. His volleyball coach, Mr.Holland taught Benner to 'erase' his gift of Burden Bearing. This was done by adopting a very specific, meditative state of mind that almost nullified his ability altogether. Carlisle no longer had to worry about absorbing traumatic experiences, and the horrible Transference curse became like a distant memory.
After graduating from Hinan Academy, Benner left the school to attend university overseas, only to return with his teaching degree. For many long years, Carlisle spent his days teaching, playing volleyball, and wandering the beautiful town that surrounded the academy. Life seemed perfect.
The students in his classes were making phenomenal progress both in and outside of his classes, managing to maintain their abilities and grow healthy relatsionships with one another. Even his personal life seemed booming with surreal life changes. Carlisle met someone, a woman by the name of Eden Ward. What began as a tentative friendship grew rather quickly to become a 'fake' engagement and Carlisle can't even deny enjoying it. While their relationship may be fake, the ring's not and Carlisle is almost giddy to have someone to dote on daily.
However, his dream-like life would quickly come to an abrupt halt with the event he can only describe as the Hinan Academy Massacre. The metas had put up a good fight at first, but their enemies were persistent and greater in number. It soon became clear who was on the winning side, and who was on the losing side.
Unable to watch his students suffering, and unable to completely protect them, Carlisle gathered a small troupe of his students and simply disappeared. He took every precaution to ensure his students and his fiancee would be safe, regrettably wishing he could have saved more than their small group. A few members of his troupe vanished to other, safer countries where the existence of meta-humans was unknown, while others joined Carlisle and his fiancee at Aurora Academy, hoping for a fresh start.
During the events of the last year, Carlisle's Burden Bearing poked it's head out once more. The man has suffered a near mental breakdown on account of coming in contact with one of his student's memories, and was briefly admitted into the Silver Falls psyche ward. Greatly disturbed and grieved by the fall of Hinan, Carlisle hasn't been able to regain that calm state of mind that often negated his ability. Thus, the man has taken to wearing gloves, and does everything in his power not to come in contact with anyone.
