Kota smiled, taking another bite into his giant pretzel he’d purchased moments before.
Today was a good day. After finally getting the dorm monitor off his back about paperwork, Kota received a regular report card on his current grades, finding out he was, in fact, passing all his classes. He’d been stressing over whether he might be failing – specifically mathematics, something he never excelled in – so to find out the opposite was a blessing in disguise.
Deciding to take it upon himself to celebrate, Kota hit the streets and let his feet wander, having no particular destination in mind but wanting to escape the compounds of school. And so, he eventually found himself on the outskirts of the oceanview boardwalk, caught between the dazzling lights of the carousel and the mystical heights of the ferris wheel. In the end he wound up choosing both, enjoying the majority of his day at the boardwalk wandering around.
Kota yawned, leaning back against the bench seat he currently sat upon. Gazing up at the orange sky of dusk, a cool wind blew through his golden locks of hair. He wasn’t sure where to go from here. Part of himself was growing tired, but another part – a bigger part, he might add – wanted to stay and continuing spending as much time away from the academy as he could. It wasn’t every day he got a chance like this, after all.
He tilted his head in thought, chowing down on another side of his pretzel. Decisions, decisions.

A gust of wind gently brushed against her cheeks. Blowing past the child and towards the passing pedestrians. Seagulls cried, echoing their calls as they flew past her, eagerly landing on the ground while pecking at the remains of trash tossed by a passing folk or two. A few pecks at discarded food and then the flock came. Two birds now drawn into a tug o war for the last morsel. Through her blue eyes she watched the scene. Allowing her sight to remain on the gathering birds. Katya began questioning her reasons why… in the name of all hells did she walk out of the campus today.
She had her games back in her room, food she could always order takeout or go to the cafeteria. No last time she checked she still had a stocked mini fridge in her room. She still had soda so that’s another to cross out her list of reasons why on earth she forced herself out the comforts of her warm bed and into…
The chilling embrace of ‘spring’ she was tempted to scoff. She saw no signs of spring aside from the buds forming on a few trees. The wind still blew frigid, caressing her skin with it iced touched. She’s still forced to huddle within the warm protection of a winter jacket. Still has a scarf wrapped around her neck to keep out most of the chill. A few strands of her messily styled locks brushed against her cheeks forcing the child to adjust the beanie cap on top of her golden head. So…what was the reason again. Wondered the child. Now making a move to stand from the bench she rested on. Blue orbs lazily drifted to the numerous food stands, to the far right was a ferris wheel spinning away. Then from the other direction she caught the path leading to the game stands offering numerous prizes to anyone willing to waste their cash on trying to beat their mini games. A game of luck really, or just a good eyesight. A sigh slipped through the child’s lips when she found the will to finally get up and walk. So she did. That’s exactly what she did, would be a waste to return back to the dorms. Now that she actually was here, plus there was a nagging feeling at the back of her mind trying to remind her of what she forgot.
She shrugged, it normally comes. Not now but maybe later so for now. She figured she might as well try to find something to do.
“SHOOT FOR LUCK, JUST FIVE EUROS, HIT ALL THE PINS AND WIN A PRIZE.”
A hawker called out,
Another one offered a game of bingo, try to get all numbers to win one of the plushies on display. The girl shook her head, fully intending to walk past. Well… that was the plan. Until she allowed her gaze to linger a bit too long on the duck shooter game. A bit too long that it settled on a large panda right atop the rack of other plushies.
A large panda plushie…all but begging for her to own. Just as it came she squashed down the temptation with a tiny hint of annoyance. Nothing broke the child’s bored mask, internally however she berated herself, reminding that a guy cannot be seen with a large plushie of all things… the last thing she needed was for people to start questioning her gender. She manage to integrate into the campus as a male. The last thing she needed was to destroy that illusion. So she turned back, tracing her steps to return back to the benches overlooking the view of the sea. Better to stay around here… less temptation--- just as she was thinking those thoughts a gust blew from behind her, knocking out the beanie perched on her head and towards…another blond sitting on the bench ahead of her. The boy clad girl cursed, uttering a long defeated sigh before she made her way towards the figure. Fully intending to retrieve her cap. Blue orbs stared the girl’s… She figured it was a girl, just with a boyish cut and in the same baggy clothing. A tomboy? To each their own as they say. Though it did cause the girl to raise an eyebrow as to why a petite female was all alone eating a pretzel where theres a flock of birds now staring hungrily at it. “….uhm….miss may I have my hat back?” She started, trying to gain the boy’s attention. She spoke in a softer tone laced with a heavy asian accent.

The sun had gradually began its decent down, turning the once-blue sky to different shades of red and orange. A seagull cawed in the distance. It truly was a sight to behold. Kota stared at the sunset thoughtfully. It wasn’t often he was able to sit back and enjoy the scenery like today. He’d been too busy with school as of late, and too much work for him never ended well. He wasn’t meant to continuously be working – no one was. At least, that was what he told himself when he took these breaks from school. Aurora Academy was a blessing in disguise, though. He already learned so much about himself he never knew before.
A gust of wind suddenly blew past him once more, bringing along with it the scent of the ocean. It was a salty, otherworldly scent that couldn’t belong anywhere else but the ocean. At times like these, he wished he had all his senses enhanced rather than just his sight and hearing. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an enhanced smell to appreciate the ocean’s gorgeous aroma all the more. But alas, he had to sit with his regular senses. He would just make use of what he already had.
He heard steps approaching and assumed it was another onlooker, not bothering to turn around. What did catch his attention, however, was a flash of color to his right. Sparing a sideways glance, he noticed a beanie had flown from seemingly nowhere to land beside him on the boardwalk’s bench. Reaching over, Kota picked up the soft material with his free hand and stared at it in thought. Where did this come from?
On cue, he heard a voice behind him softly say, “…uhm…miss may I have my hat back?”
At first he assumed the voice was directed at someone else, though when he spared a look around he realized he was the only one nearby. The other people that had lingered on the edge of the boardwalk had apparently travelled back to participate in more of the festivities taking place. With his sight, he was able to spot one couple in particular over his shoulder, walking around together hand in hand. A slight ting of jealousy filled his heart, but he quickly shook it off. No need to get depressed.
Turning his attention to the voice that had called out, Kota realized it belonged to another boy appearing around his age. They looked extraordinarily similar, both sporting short blonde locks of hair and large baby blue eyes to match. On top of that, the two were both small-framed and skinny, with pale skin. Kota had been so focused on their similarities, he’d almost forgotten the words spoken to him.
That’s right, there was no one else around in their vicinity, which meant the comment had been directed at himself. Kota felt his eye twitch; not this again. Twice in the span of a week he’d been mistaken as a girl? What luck he had. Tossing the remains of his pretzel in the nearby trash can, he stood up to face the other boy, holding the beanie in his hands as he did so. He shot a glare in the boy’s direction – the one thing that pissed Kota off more than anything else was being called a girl. He thought he’d outgrown the stage of being called such, but he supposed he was wrong.
“I’m not a ‘miss’,” he snapped, annoyed that this was the second time he’d had to correct someone about it. First the jerk in the boys’ dorms, and now this random guy. “How would you like it if someone called you by the wrong gender?” Kota asked, his tone laced with frustration. He was honestly done with being mistaken as a girl.
Realizing he had the upper hand by holding the wanted beanie, his frustration suddenly turned to amusement as he grinned wickedly at the other boy before him. “Since you got my identity wrong, you’ll have to pass a test to get your hat back.” He smirked, feeling oddly playful about the situation. “If you can answer a question right about myself, you’ll get it back. If you fail, I get to keep it. Sound fair?” Part of him realized he was being a bit unreasonable and taking his frustrations out on a stranger, but he started it. That’s what he told himself, anyway.

Orange hues soon bleed into the blue sky canvas. Drenching the pastel blue into a deep vermillion. Time was passing, if the skies were any hint Katya figured the time to be lingering around six in the afternoon. Another hour and it’ll be dark. Not that it wasn’t starting already. Brilliant. She had originally wanted to head back before dusk. But now… now with this intrusion into her perfectly labelled plans. She doubted she’ll make it back to the campus gate in under thirty minutes. Then there’s the lone fact she doesn’t really know what bloody game this…. Feminine boy planned within that cranium of his. A brow arched within that feminine face of hers, delicate rising above as the boy’s words reached her ears. So…. She was a he, there’s an irony there to be mistaken by the very gender he wasn’t. Not that he knew she was actually part of the female race. But still, there’s got to be a problem when girls aren’t immune to questioning his manhood.
She made a funny, morbid as it sounded in her mind. Katya made the wise choice of keeping it to herself. She really wasn’t in the mood to entertain the man in front of her. Those blue eyes of his shone with barely hidden playfulness similar to those of a cat who just found a new string to play with.
A sinking feeling rose within her stomach, already trying to tell her this boy was trouble. Normally the passive child often listened to her gut instincts when it came to warnings. But for this one? This one occasion she found it hard to believe a feminine boy could cause her to be wary. Maybe give her headaches like it did now, she didn’t allow it to show through her face. She listened to him rage indignantly at being called a female.
“You looked like one…” Came her automatic response. Still refusing to break through the poke faced expression labelled on her face. Clear blue orbs barely reacted to the fuming boy’s rant other than shrug away. ’that’s cause I’m a girl maybe?’ The blond child thought sarcasm lacing every word echoing within her mind. Why would it affect her? Aside from pretending to be indignant to it. All while calmly correcting them she’s male. “Haven’t had that problem….” The girl casually stated back.
There was a lot more she could point out, like how doe like the boy’s innocent stare looked like from her point of view. Or how delicate his nose looked like partner with pouty lips. Oh yes… the boy was a girl walking in a man’s body. And she would absolutely hate to be the bearer of bad news… well if she only cared that is.
Right on cue, while the boy held her cap hostage a flock of gulls proved a welcome distraction for her. As they all but dove for the half eaten pretzel the boy tossed out. For a split second her gaze lazily peeked behind him. Watching as the birds all fought for a morsel of food, then back to the boy’s face once he stated his game.
Her lip twitched, hinting a tiny a bit of annoyance she was willing to show. “….There’s one problem with that.” The pursed her lips, crossing her arms on her chest before she continued. “I don’t know you.” Katya all but bluntly stated. Well it’s rather true. She didn’t know him. Aside from mistaking him for a girl.

Kota remembered when he was younger, his older sisters would dress him in their clothes. He didn’t think anything of it at the time – in fact, he rather enjoyed the attention given to him. His sisters would praise him and exclaim what a pretty boy he was, and he would stand there with a proud grin across his tiny features. He thought he was king of the world with the way they treated him. Looking back on it now that he was older and knew better, he knew his sisters were only having fun and didn’t mean any harm by it. Although being older meant he needed respect, and part of that was being recognized for his actual gender.
While he was fuming about being mistaken, yet again, for a girl, he was appalled when the boy in front of him responded with a straight face, “You looked like one.” WHAT? The audacity this boy had was astounding. Kota felt his fists bawl tightly at his sides. He’d never felt more aggravated to actually hit someone before now. This boy was really getting under his skin.
Instead, he took a deep breath and threw out, “That’s a rude thing to say.” The other boy was lucky that’s all he said. If Kota wanted, he could go on a tangent about this guy, but he held his tongue. No need to make further enemies. Since the two looked around the same age, he was sure this boy also attended Aurora Academy.
The question was now, what to ask for his game?
As he pondered this, Kota heard a bell go off and glanced to his side, seeing a girl win a stuffed panda as a prize at one of the gaming stands. His face puffed out in jealousy once more. What he wouldn’t give for a cute stuffed animal at that moment. It was a girly thing to like, but Kota had always been a fan of stuffed animals. When he was younger, he had a collection of them on the shelves of his wall. And he was damn proud of that collection, too.
He shook his head, realizing he was getting off topic. Suddenly, an idea for his game sprang into his head. As the boy in front of him made the obvious comment of “I don’t know you”, Kota found himself rolling his eyes. “That’s the point. Don’t you enjoy a good challenge?” He grinned. “Don’t worry, I’ll make it a simple question. If you can’t figure it out, I’ll give you a second chance at something else. Sound good?”
Without waiting for a response, he continued on. “I’m assuming you’re also from Aurora Academy, judging by your age. So! Answer me this: what is my talent? If you guess right, I’ll give you the beanie back right away.”
The sound of seagulls cawing behind him was beginning to grow too loud for his sensitive ears. Kota spared an annoyed glance behind him to see the birds fighting over his pretzel. Surprised, originally thinking he had thrown it in a trash can, he shook his head and looked back over to the other boy, crossing his arms over one another with a grin now across his features.

A plushie… the boy was staring at a plushie. For once Katya stood there confused. Awhile ago he was fuming about being confused for a girl. And now here he was, staring at an object of cuteness normally only females get attracted too. Cute plushies…sure a few guys also fall victim to their allure. But dammit, the guy REALLY was a female trapped in a man’s body. She wasn’t so sure if she believed he was a guy either. He could be like her, pretending to be one. But still curiosity got the better of her, following his gaze, it stopped right back to the gaming booths. One booth in particular that had those oversize plushies.
A twinge of annoyance began to creep into her followed a tiny voice egging for her to go get one as well. The side of her that’s still fond of them. She can’t erase it, no matter how deep she tries to bury the temptation for one of the things she’s actually fond of. Next to her sweets, Katya harboured an affection for cute objects. Plushies, clothes… well not clothes anymore. She can’t wear it. Unless she wanted to broadcast to the entire campus she’s female. She shivered at the idea, squishing it as soon as it came. She had enough nightmares, paranoia a few friends back home joked about. She merely scoffed at the notion. But now…she’s beginning to have serious thoughts about its validity. Nonetheless. She had another concern right now, personal matters she can think about when insomnia decides to pay her another visit tonight.
This boy and she uses the term lightly wasn’t getting on her good side. No… actually he was more or less annoying her but she gave in. Huffing in annoyance she breathed out. Sighing as she finally consented to his wager.
Though…. She really found no sense in it. She didn’t know him, aside from the mere coincidence of running into him due to a wayward wind deciding to knock her cap out of her head. From orange now turning into dusk, gray clouds followed suite, beginning to bleed into the sky as well like a blanket slowly being covered. The sun was long gone at this point with the moon beginning to make its rise. Street lamps flickered to life, illuminating the fair grounds. It wasn’t the only one, one by one the lights decorating the scene soon followed. Crowds were coming in now, from the calm stream awhile ago soon began to pick up as people came. Finally coming out from wherever they were holing themselves in. That’s the thing she found funny about European countries, people often hole themselves up in their dens. Refusing to leave until they really need to.
She figured it was because of the cold. She wasn’t a fan of it either. Particularly when frost refuse to allow Spring to gain entry on her domain. The boy started to speak, snapping her out of her reverie as she blinked, turning her head back to his direction. “It depends whether or not I get something out of it…. Or if it makes sense.” Came the child’s blunt answer. She wasn’t like her sister. Sure she liked a nice challenge here and there, but really. It depended on her mood. And her mood right now… was only interested in her hat. Well…she was half tempted to let the boy keep it. She can always buy another one. It’s a nuisance true but it’s temporary, the cap was actually one of the items she pilfered from her brother’s clothes before coming here…Which actually was the only reason she wasn’t listening to the other half wants to abandon the hat. She’ll play his game… as much as its tempting her to twitch her eyebrow. She held back the urge, refusing to break the indifferent façade she had on.
“Good deduction, except there’s two others school located on this town….” She couldn’t help herself, the fox in her wanted her own fun as well. She wasn’t going to let him annoy her without having a taste of it as well.
“…How exactly are you sure I’m from the same school as you.” The girl once more spoke, cryptically. Feigning innocence at the same time while the inner demon in her was smirking slightly. Thankfully her face betrayed nothing but a look of indifference plastered on the child’s doll-like mien. “…Looks can be deceiving…Who knows I could also be older than you.” Since when did she speak this much? It was already starting to inch at her throat from having to talk to this much when normally she refrained from having to talk unless she needed to. But she did say she was going to play his game… She wanted her hat back anyway. Another low grumble in Japanese before she flicked her eyes over to his grin. At least someone found it amusing. He asked for her to guess what power he had… Hell she barely knew anything about this power business they were talking about. All she did was wisely keep her mouth shut. She couldn’t exactly tell them she barely knew what hers was. If she had any that is. She pretended to think for a moment before she answered. “Pheromones?” She tilted her head.

Kota noticed a few streetlamps around them flickered on, and it occurred to him at that moment that he hadn’t been paying much attention to the time of day. The day was already fading to night, with the crowds still mostly lingering around the game and food stands. He felt his stomach growl at the thought. He inwardly kicked himself at throwing away his pretzel, the morsel of food now long gone thanks to the seagulls crowding the beach. Kota could still hear them cawing behind him, begging for more food. As if he had any to give. As if he would if he did.
“It depends whether or not I get something out of it…Or if it makes sense,” he heard him reply.
Kota shook his head. Did this guy have no sense of whimsy? No playful side? Kota, himself, had always been the playful sort, especially as a child. He had a wild imagination and wasn’t afraid to show it. That was simply how he was. He shouldn’t have been surprised this guy wasn’t the same – after all, he’d hardly shown any emotions across his features. This guy was almost…robotic-like. Kota made it his mission all-the-more to get this guy out of his shell. Those that had the hardest exteriors tended to have the softest insides.
“How exactly are you sure I’m from the same school as you.”
The guy had a point. There were two other schools in the area, but Kota went with his gut and called it like he saw it. Thinking that to himself, he muttered a reply of “I’m not sure. Call it a gut feeling.” He knew that wasn’t the best answer to give, but regardless gave it anyway. It wasn’t unusual for him to make assumptions on other people. Most of the time he was wrong, and he very well could’ve been in this instance, too. He didn’t appreciate how cryptic the other boy was being, either. Instead of confirming or denying if they both went to Aurora Academy, he only left him with more questions than answers.
Finally, the moment he’d been waiting for: the other boy answered his game question with a simple “Pheromones?” and a tilt of his head.
Kota literally smacked his forehead in a face palm. That was the best this guy could guess? “No,” he huffed, embarrassed by the answer. He also didn’t appreciate the implications, but kept that to himself. No point dwelling on it. “So you lost, but have no fear – I’ll give you a second chance.”
Walking over toward the gaming stands, feeling his confidence rising, he turned to face the other boy and called out, “You get to choose which game we play. The prize will be your beanie.” As if trying to get a reaction from the other boy, Kota waved the prized beanie in the air before returning it to his side. He had luck on his side, after all. Kota was a natural at games, and with his enhanced vision he had great hand-eye coordination. This should be a piece of cake for him.

She has… so many other comebacks in line for the boy, so many more words threatening to trail right after that ‘pheromone’ joke. Should sarcasm further tempt her. The boy’s actions weren’t endearing him from her holding back said plethora of words. She waited until he tried to get her to guess more. She actually expected him to do so. And if he did, she already had the perfect comeback sitting at the tip of her tongue.
She’s normally never one to bother expending energy to retort or dish out any sort of comebacks. Normally Katya goes for the ignoring approach. But that wouldn’t work in this situation. She could tell just from how he acted. Ironic isn’t it? A girl who barely understood people managing to read a guy as open as a book. He was like that, he was an open book. Easy enough to read that she could do so word by word, letter by letter just by seeing the imp in him all but announce its presence to her. A presence she wasn’t particularly interested in having anything to do with. But what’s done is done. He dragged her into this mischief of his. Now a change of plans is called for. Now all she wants is the hat before turning away and forgetting this madness ever occurred.
Though she did allow herself a tiny victory and the boy being frustrated by her cryptic response. All she did was give him a taste of his own mischief. If he planned on quizzing her then, she might as well respond in kind. Forcing off the thoughts. The girl barely held back a smirk from touching her lips at watching his palm connect with his face. “It a mere guess, your appearance kinda betrayed you there.” She said. This time tilting her head to the side. A few strands tickling to her cheek which she brushed back. So what else was he going to ask her? She inwardly wondered. One side already internally egging her to check the time while the other curious side actually wanted to wait.
’For the hat, for the hat.’ She repeated into a mantra. The idea of leaving it to its fate grew a lot of more tempting by the minute. Brother wouldn’t know, he barely checks his belongings anymore. Well on the clothes department. The man could always buy enough items to replace what he lost. Clothes being on the top priority there if mother doesn’t get it for him. Now that thought left a sour taste in her mouth. Like the sour left over after vomiting up someone’s stomach. That’s exactly the same taste it left in her mouth. And gut, oh definitely the gut. A sigh went out of her lips, only for it to pause once the boy told her she was wrong. The boy clad female rose an eyebrow. To both his response as trusting his gut instincts towards her reply about them being in the same academy and to her answer of his power. Wrong he said, but still was willing to give another chance. This time she followed his gaze once more to the game stands. Lingering on a few games before she forced it back to face him. The eyebrow still up in a silent look that all but spoke. ‘Are you kidding me?’ She didn’t voice out her thoughts instead just stared at the man as if he was joking. But he wasn’t. So now… it was a competition for the hat. “Sure…” The child gave in. Crossing out the plan to get back home in twenty minutes. At least there’s no school in the morning, it wasn’t like she hadn’t slip past curfew a few times when her insomnia visited. Lazily flickering her blue orbs back to the stands she silently pointed to the duck shoot out. A shooting game in which they’re given those toy guns to try and shoot as much ducks as they can. Should be easy right?

Kota didn’t understand this boy.
First: he insults his appearance by calling him a girl. The irony didn’t pass him up; he was well-aware of the other boy’s feminine looks as well, but wisely held his tongue. He was sure he could’ve started something between the two over their own femininity, but honestly wasn’t feeling in the mood to start a fight. Especially with someone he didn’t know. For all he knew, this boy could know martial arts and slam him on the ground for calling him girly in return. He didn’t look it, but looks could be deceiving.
Second: his attitude needed some work. Kota had spent a whole two minutes with this guy and already knew he was the type that would have trouble making friends. He rarely spoke, and when he did it was curt and to the point. Despite the fact that he’d mistaken Kota for a woman, he had yet to make an apology for his mistake. He was reckless. Perhaps not as much as Kota, but to the point where it would eventually lead him into trouble.
Lastly: he had been cryptic about his school roots. Kota was positive he went to Aurora Academy and was just playing aloof, but he couldn’t be completely certain. After all, the guy hadn’t confirmed or denied this fact yet, merely stating the other two neighboring schools in Silver Falls. Kota hated when someone wouldn’t give a proper answer, like they were playing him. Messing with him. It made him feel out of the loop, like they were in on a joke that went above his head.
Finally the other boy agreed to his challenge of a second game, and Kota let out a sigh of relief to his response. At least he was being cooperative. Truth be told, it wasn’t like Kota wanted to keep the beanie. He wasn’t a fan of hats. They were tight on his head and messed up his hair, often giving him the bedhead, mishandled look that he wasn’t sure he could pull off. All the more power to those that could, but it probably wasn’t in the cards for him.
The boy pointed in the direction of a gaming stand, and Kota turned his head to see what he picked. It was a shooting game with moving ducks. Score! Kota had near-perfect hand-eye coordination thanks to his special vision. This would be a piece of cake.
“Alright then. Let’s go,” Kota replied, nodding his head to the suggested place. Walking over to the gaming stand, he handed over a leftover ticket he’d kept in his pocket from earlier that day, turning to face the plastic ducks as they began to move around. Swiping up the toy gun from the counter, he narrowed his eyes and aimed at the first duck.
Bang! Score.
By the end of it, he had shot nine of the ten ducks, barely missing the last one by an inch due to someone distracting him in the background. Letting out a huff, Kota turned to face the other blonde boy with a grin across his features.
“Alright. Only way to beat me is to get a perfect score. You still game?”

She never asked for anyone to understand her. From the way, she acted she thought she voiced it out loud enough to avoid having to verbally state it. But it seems some people make it a habit to ignore whats infront of them. Example would be this guy, there’s just something about him that screams… Stubborn in bold letters, he reminds her of something. The name lingered at the tip of her tongue but she cant quite recall. From the small collection of people she deemed enough to be called friends. She had a few who she can label as ‘hard-headed bakas’ she has a few she can outright name.
But him… he reminded her of a different kind of stubborn. One that literally gave her headaches from dealing with it. Those she labelled on this group was those whom actually made a dent through her stone hard walls. The cracks though were long repaired. Being away from their presence fixed some of those cracks they made with numerous oaths about allowing anymore to tear another chuck out of defence.
It has to remain. Forever standing strong to block away most from the remaining pieces of what she called a heart. The child took a deep breath, calming herself and the irritation crawling out of her nerves. Like tiny little snakes slithering up her spine. This doesn’t bode well. The look on his eye, the mischief glimmering like a Christmas ornament dangling from an overly lit Christmas tree. The eyes told it all.
All of a sudden dread washed over her. It wasn’t from the now crowded grounds whose population seemingly crawled from out of nowhere. Or the happy jeers from a few groups hovering around the game tents. But from the glint he had on his eye it meant… absolute trouble to the young Asian.
If she knew his type of person well she could already guess what he’s going to do… he agreed to the shooting game. She blinked, confused at first. Last time she got someone to agree to a shooting game they swore black and blue afterwards right after making numerous oaths never to play a round with her again. But to see the innocence of his while he agreed. She somewhat feel bad for picking the game knowing full well the lad was going to be a sitting duck.
And another thing… this was going to clash with another oath she made. But right now, she honestly didn’t bother trying to remember that oath. T’was an exemption she can only say later. Not that anyone knew of it.
Now to go full out or… she mused inwardly contemplating while she wordlessly trailed after him to the stands. Did she even have coins with her? She rarely collected coins. Much more cash on her pockets. She had her card that was all she needed. But to carry around cash… She really need to make a habit of it. Oh wait. She paused that thought, rummaging through her pockets discreetly. Her hand dug around for the familiar jiggle of coins. She found some, on her right pocket the rest…she paused again. This time fishing out her hand from said pocket then pulling out her bag from her bag. On the front container she found some as well as a few paper bills. So she did have some spares… she honestly didn’t remember she had some. But oh well she had some.
“Sure…” She muttered quietly, barely glancing at Kota. She placed a few coins to pay for her fee. 2 euros for a game. Wasn’t so bad. She swore it was more than that before but oh well. “Just ten ducks?..” She asked, keeping her expression set to neutral. Once he nodded she picked the offered pellet rifle. Just ten… a lazy gaze wordlessly drifted over him… Bang, his gun echoed, followed by a thud. As her gaze soon followed his aim. His first duck down, still it wasn’t enough to poke out the competitive side from the child. She had no reason to show off, she didn’t want to attract anymore attention to her if she could help it.
“Dakara kare wa mubōbidatta...” (So he wasn’t defenceless…) Katya mumbled more to herself in her native tongue. She shook her head, now a bit amused. Sure she can be a bit prideful she actually carried some talent when it came to marksmanship but still… Guess she figured she can at least humour him. Maybe miss one or two…
That was until he broke her thoughts by loudly declaring he got 9. That was it. She didn’t pick a verbal response to his declaration. No she picked a more… physical one. ¨
By shooting the head off out of the of the targeted cardboard ducks. The gun…somewhat made her hands feel at home as she handled it with expert ease, balancing it on her hands with the scope levelled her to her eyes. Her bored expression still plastered tightly on her face as she wordlessly shot another one.
Another headshot, third she aimed for the chest. A whole blasted itself onto the third duck’s chest area. Fourth she aimed for the middle. Five, six seven went down easily after the fourth. She rolled her neck, hearing that satisfying crack before she went after the eighth… Unaware of the growing disbelief the seller was gaining from how… sharp eyed the two kids were. His mouth almost fell out of his jawbone from the indication on how he was looking at the two boys. Now to miss on purpose or to hit… Her sniper pride begged her not to sully it. Hell if…. Sensei was here. She stopped the thought. He’s gone… he shouldn’t wish for the dead when nothing it does would bring them back to life. If he was here he would have encouraged her to show instead of blatantly sabotaging herself. She closed her eyes sighing into the wind before she fire two shots, one purposely aimed a few centimeters off from the target. She was… per say aiming to miss the last one. By her calculations it should miss. She hadnt accounted for the trajectory to be slightly off when she calculated it. She hit ninth on problems. “Guess we—“ She was cut short when her supposed missed hit actually slammed into the tenth duck, the bullet tearing a hole into the left wing but it was enough to knock it out. Well shit… Her eyebrow rose upwards.
“You two sure your kids and not army folks pretending to be kids? That’s some shooting there.” The owner commented once he’s able to pick his jaw from the ground. A complete ten, even though she miscalculated on the missed hit she was planning. She wasn’t too happy with miscalculating. Hell she wasn’t too happy with winning it either way. But she kept it all from showing from her face. “Guess… it’s a ten…” The girl grumbled a bit put off by the miss actually hitting. Hey she’s still human, she blamed yoloing her calculations. “Ten hits gets one of the larger prizes, 5 upwards gets the middle ones.” The seller explained, pointing to the large plushies sitting atop and then towards the medium sized ones at the bottom. She quietly pointed to the large panda holding onto a bamboo. The man nodded, reaching it up with a long pole before handing it over to the teen.
And now what to do with a plushie…she was sure as hell wasn’t going to allow herself to keep it. Too many questions she didn’t want answered. So she did the most logical thing she could come up with. She dumped the rather large plush into Kota’s arms right after depositing the rifle back onto the counter. “Keep it.” Shrugged the girl.

Kota was honestly slightly annoyed with himself.
He missed a single shot during his last target. That was so unlike him. Normally he’d have no problem hitting everything perfectly, even if there were distractions around him. Part of him wanted to blame it on the crowd. People had begun gathering around the two during Kota’s shooting, marveling at his near perfect score. It would have been perfect, too, if it wasn’t for someone bumping into his arm at the last second. The guy had been apparently pushing through the crowd, trying to get a better view on the game, and had run into Kota by accident. That’s what he kept telling himself, anyway. That it was just an accident – nothing more, nothing less. Certainly not some sign from God telling him he didn’t deserve the beanie.
Which, technically, he didn’t. It was true. He was surprised the other boy had agreed to his game up to this point. Why hadn’t he just simply tried taking the beanie back by force? It would’ve been easy enough. Kota wasn’t exactly the athletic type, built scrawny and skinny with baby fat still in his cheeks. Although the other boy didn’t look like the fighting type – he honestly looked a bit like Kota. Well, aside from the robotic personality. In that sense, the two were polar opposites.
The other boy picked up the pellet gun and began his aim, Kota watching silently beside him with his hands shoved in the depths of his pockets. He thought this would be interesting. Part of him wondered whether or not the boy was any good at shooting. He still didn’t know if he had a talent or attended Aurora Academy, but his gut told him yes. Kota wondered to himself if that talent was anything like his own, and if the boy was able to shoot more accurately because of it. If it weren’t for his enhanced vision, after all, Kota might not be as good of a shooter as he was.
But he remained silent, keeping his opinions and thoughts to himself as he watched the boy steady his gun.
BANG.
A duck went down. Kota raised a brow but said nothing, choosing instead to watch while more people gathered in the crowd, impressed by the two boys. Another bang went off, and yet another duck went down. This trend continued on until the final duck, and Kota stood there amazed. So the other boy could back himself up. That was good to know.
BANG.
The final shot went off, determining the winner to be the other boy. Kota felt his shoulders slink in defeat, knowing he should’ve been able to get that last target if it weren’t for his distraction. But fair is fair. He lost, and he wouldn’t sulk over it. The other boy seemed genuinely surprised at his win, and Kota couldn’t help but feel suspicious at that. Why was he surprised? Did he not expect to win?
His thoughts were interrupted by the owner of the game stand, joking about them being from the army. Kota grinned in response, shaking his head and letting out a soft laugh. It was a genuine compliment to him, and one he hadn’t received before. Of course, the other boy said nothing while the man behind the counter explained to them the prizes they could choose. He vaguely noticed the boy beside him choose a panda – good choice, Kota thought, knowing he would’ve picked the same. Instead he had to choose a middle prize, pointing his finger in the direction of a medium-sized stuffed jellyfish.
After the man gave both their prizes, Kota turned to face the boy and was startled when he was suddenly shoved the large panda, barely able to hold the two prizes in his arms. “Keep it,” he shrugged, and Kota frowned.
“But you won…” he trailed off unsurely. Proving his point, he grasped the beanie and handed it over to the boy, saying, “Here’s your hat back.”
Despite losing, Kota had genuinely had a good time playing. He chose to voice this to the other blonde, smiling his way as he did so. “That was fun! Wanna try another tent? I could start building a collection with all my prizes.”

She won when she had no intention of winning in the first place the upside was she didn’t need to get her brother a new hat but still… the rest of the fanfare she can do without. The crowd gathering around them is one of it. A few from the group whistled at the children’s scores it wasn’t everyday they get to see two kids shoot with the same finessed as professional shooters. Their score proved it. Especially with how they both downed their targets.
That’s what drew in the crowd in the first place. They wanted to see which of the two would win. She planned it in the last minute, so it shouldn’t be surprising why her luck decided to screw her over once more. A twitch threatened to pound on the girl’s temple which only worsen the shiver running up her spine. Sending small jolts down her nerves. Their stares made her uncomfortable but she tried stifling it down. Pushing away the paranoia beginning to bite at her heels. She wasn’t sure if the boy actually believed her lucky shot. There wasn’t much she could do about it, judging from the way his eyes narrowed for a split second. She hadn’t mentioned it, preferring to note it for later should he ask.
“I’m not…a fan of stuff toys win or not.” Katya quietly elaborated the questioning gaze the boy tossed her way. She really didn’t care, even as a few of the bystanders congratulated them on the nice shooting. Particularly Kota though a few did mistake him for being a girl. With what that cute jellyfish and now gigantic panda sitting on his arms. He…really did look like a girl to be honest. Not just a female but a child with his height. She nearly winced at the thought. She really shouldn’t be saying anything against it considering she also suffered from the lack of height.
Taking the hat back, she rested it back on her head. Letting it cover her messy mop of flaxen coloured hair. The pale moon already made its appearance after the sun made its exit half an hour ago as soft dabbles of its rays fell on the ground. The light coming from the colourful set illuminating the fair glimmered in the night air, making her skin a slight pale in the eyes. She glanced back at the shooting stand to find a couple already making a try for it. She thought that was it, that she can finally make her exit. The flood of people wasn’t helping curve the restless need to escape their company. A sigh blew from her lips. Making a quick glance at the watch on her wrist. Nearly seven she frowned. So much for her heading home early.
He…wanted to do another game? Her thoughts ran short as the boy once more spoke. She had forgotten his presence. Even for a few short minutes she raised an eyebrow at him. “…Another game?” The girl queried giving him a look that asked if he was serious. Wasn’t one enough for this boy? She really had no reason. She got her hat back, she can easily walk off and never look back. But she didn’t. She knows how stubborn these kinds of people can get. The boy reminded her of a male version of her twin which… both irritated her and actually even if its tiny, amused her. “Wasn’t… one enough?” She voiced out her thoughts directly, waiting for his reply. If he wanted to go on maybe… ehh she can easily sneak back in. Curfew really never did bother her.

The crowd around the two had intensified, and Kota grinned in response. He loved the attention they were getting. It was something he practically fed off of. With his special hearing, he could hear every word of excitement said amongst the gathered crowd about the two young teenage boys and felt his pride swell from the praise given. He should do these games more often if he was getting this kind of attention. With this boy, the two would be the talk of the gaming stands.
“Good shot for a girl!” one bystander shouted.
Kota spun on his heel and practically snapped back “I’m not a girl!” in response, glaring at the person who’d uttered those words. The guy awkwardly apologized and backed off, seeming offended by Kota’s words. He didn’t care. He should’ve been the one offended. Too many people were mistaking him as a girl, and it was beginning to piss him off. He was a boy, dammit! He wanted to shout it from the rooftops, and he wouldn’t have been ashamed either. Why weren’t they mistaking the other boy as a girl? He had a feminine look about him, too, Kota thought begrudgingly. Why was he the only one cursed with this?
The other boy suddenly spoke, causing Kota to turn back around to face him as he explained he wasn’t a fan of stuffed animals. Kota shrugged in response. “More for me, then,” he grinned, letting out a lighthearted laugh. He honestly had a new goal in mind by this point: he wanted to walk out of the gaming tents with his arms full of stuffed animals. It would give him something to decorate his bland dorm room with. He didn’t have much in his room, anyway. Nothing but clothes carelessly thrown around the floor, in desperate need of a wash. He shuddered at the thought, not looking forward to laundry day.
“Another game?” the other boy asked, taking Kota’s attention once more. “Wasn’t one enough?”
He shook his head in response. “One’s never enough,” he smiled. “I’m gonna need others to keep these two company.” The other boy might’ve thought he was joking with his lighthearted tone, but he wasn’t. Kota was dead set on winning other prizes at this point. His blood was pumping, adrenaline shooting through his veins from the recent game he played. His competitive streak was now on fire. And it couldn’t be quenched until the two played some more.
Nodding at this thought, his eyes landed on the boy as he spoke up. “Why don’t you go ahead and choose another game? I’m not letting you off that easily!” Kota thought he was being a tad pushy toward the boy, but shrugged it off. That seemed to be the attitude he had to go with. And Kota could be a stubborn ass if he wanted to.

A girl... a girl, she's been hearing that a lot lately with his company. The boy wasn't kidding, the child realized. She thought it was a joke of his when people kept mistaking him for a girl. Apparently there was some truth and ironically she can smell the irony within in. When a real girl also mistakes him for being part of the gender... well it doesnt take much to say something really was wrong with the picture and for Kat there was no bigger irony than to be mistaken for a girl by someone pretending to be the exact opposite. If she closed her eyes, and listen carefully she might be able to hear the chortle laughter bursting from the heavens as the gods all but tossed their bets in on when the boy will be called as a female once again.
Great shot, she gave the guy a bored stare, unnerving the poor man as to how a doll-like young boy could manage to encase his entire spine in ice just from staring at those frozen orbs. The boy made a wise decision, in stammering out a few sentences she didn't bother to listen to, excusing himself from the crowd with speeds rivaling a man running for his life. She arched an eyebrow more out of confusion than any given amusement caused by a man running from a mere glare caused by a younger child. Was she that scary? She wondered quietly, musing her thoughts until she heard the boy snap back at some of the onlookers. Another girl comment. "....Fifth..." She recounted. Counting the fifth time she heard the comment leave someone's lips before she drifted her gaze back towards the male. Her assumptions were right, the kid reminded her of her twin while on a sugar high. Give her one ride and she'll be begging for another. But for his case it was...stuffed animals. The girl in her was practically begging to yank the panda back but she kept an iron grip over it. Practically shoving its urges to the deepest part of her mind where it wouldnt affect the carefully crafted neutral mask she had on her face. "I was hoping one would be enough..." She grumbled. The grumpy cat people often mentioned came sneaking out of her tone. She wasn't honestly planning on staying.
But the look the boy had... was exactly how Lily would have went to when she didnt give into her wants. The same calculated spark hinting a plan sneaking into his head. She didnt want to risk what other madness the boy had in mind. Neither did she notice how in all this she didnt even get a name out of him. Neither did she bother to give a name to him. She mentally shrugged it off, she'll wait until he notice it first before she'll say anything about it. But for now... she paused the thought. Choosing to shift her attention back to him when his voice caught it.
"...Wasn't two enough already?" Kat countered. Knowing already the boy was going to stubbornly deny it. She was right again...when the guy stated he wanted more. He gave the same expression as a collector who found a new object worth collecting. She wasn't so sure why she wasnt wary of it. But the sinking feeling this boy wont allow her to leave until he needed a trolley to drag his winnings bloomed in her gut.
"Fine..." She sighed out exasperation labeled within as she shook her head. "I'd...rather preserve my pride as a guy... I still need it." By now the crowd had long dispersed, disappointed that the show was done and that there wouldnt be any other follow ups, she glanced around the stream of people flooding through the narrowed pathways, gazing over towards the other game booths. None caught her eye so she turned back. She figured it'll only be fair if she was going to accompany this guy as a reluctant party. That he should have a go at picking any other game. It was like watching over his twin again..she was lucky she had enough experience dealing with overly excitable people. "....You pick this time." She said, tilting her head, indicating she really didnt know which one to go for.

Kota felt his smile tick down a notch at the sound of another onlooker making a comment about him being female, glaring their way to show he was – in fact – male. They apologized and quickly shuffled away, and he let out a huff of frustration. He was getting sick and tired of these so-called ‘mistakes’ of him being a girl. Honestly, did he really look that feminine? Sure, he had a lanky body and soft features, but anyone should be able to tell on close inspection that he was a boy. He supposed most people didn’t bother taking that close of a look at him to notice – another thing that irritated him.
“…Wasn’t two enough already?” he heard the other boy counter.
Giving him a stubborn look, he figured his face was enough to answer that question. There was no way Kota was leaving this amusement park with only two prizes. He’d already decided he was leaving with as many as he could carry to decorate his plain and boring dorm room with stuffed animals. He didn’t care if he was made fun of for it – that was something he was used to, anyway. Kota was a colorful person, and his room should reflect that personality.
Eventually, however, the other boy gave in, and Kota pumped his fist in the air as a sign of victory. The boy went on to say something along the lines of preserving his pride as a male, and Kota felt that was somehow a dig at him but chose to wisely ignore it. He was on too much of a high to bother to care about insults. He could feel his blood pumping through his veins, filled to the brim with adrenaline from winning the previous game. And there were so many more games to come, he thought with a wicked grin.
“You pick this time.”
The other boy’s voice broke his thoughts, and Kota glanced his way to see the boy finished surveying the area. Apparently he found nothing of interest. That was fine – he could choose for them.
Glancing around in a similar fashion, his blue eyes spotted a lit-up pole with a hammer at its base. Tugging on the boy’s sleeve, he ushered for him to follow him as he made his way through the crowd, coming up to the new game that caught his eye. It was one of the classics: one simply hit the base of the pole as hard as they could with the hammer, and a bell would rise up the pole depending on how hard they hit. The top prizes were only won for those that managed to hit the base hard enough to make the bell reach the top of the pole.
Eyes wide with excitement, Kota turned to face the other boy with a grin across his features. “Okay! This game is simple. Just hit the base of the pole with the hammer, and the bell will rise higher depending on how hard you hit. You go first!” To be honest, he let the other boy go first to see how strong he was. Kota wasn’t the strongest or most in-shape, so this game would be a weak point of his, but he was determined to try his best nevertheless.
