Emery watched Sam doggy paddle while standing, and she found herself having to bite her lip to keep from laughing. She had never seem someone try to swim like that before, and it was so cute. She supposed it was because he hadn’t swam before, something that still boggled her mind over. After all, who hasn’t gotten the chance to swim in their life? She had never met someone of their age that hadn’t.
“No, you need to use your legs, too,” she replied, giving a light smile. “But you have a good start. Try lifting your legs in the water and kicking. You might start to sink, but don’t worry – I’m here to catch you. I won’t let anything happen.”

Sam wasn't so sure about that. Somehow, he had a bad feeling. "O-okay..." He lifted his legs off the floor and sank like a log.

Emery was enjoying the cool feel of the water’s temperature. She should really take more breaks like this – she’d been working hard enough on her studies as it was. She always made sure to prioritize her schoolwork. Learning that from her mother, Emery was a straight A student because of it. Unfortunately for her, that meant little social life. Not that she was a partier or anything, but she did enjoy conversing with other peers from time to time. Her only issue was her constant need to please others, and because of that she had difficulty maintaining friends.
She seemed to be doing well with Sam as a friend, though. Just as this thought crossed her mind, Sam lifted his feet from the pool’s bottom and began to sink in the water. Oh, no!
Diving to his rescue, Emery grabbed hold around Sam’s stomach and pulled him to the surface, asking hastily, “Are you alright?” All he did was sink – he didn’t try kicking to stay afloat. She hadn’t expected that. “I should’ve been more clear, I apologize. You need to kick at the water in order to swim. By moving both your arms and legs, you’ll float.”

Falling, deeper and deeper, Sam went into the water. Was he doing it right? Somehow, he didn't think so. Suddenly, he felt a warmth on his abdominal area, sending a tingling sensation through is body.
Soon, Sam somehow got to the surface and could breath again. Emery was so close. She was talking to him, so he listened until she was done. "Kick at the water?" He got a confused. "Like karate?" He wondered if learning karate might help him learn a wide variety of kicks so he could swim better.
