Emery let out a soft sigh.
It had been another stressful day at Aurora Academy. Once again, she found herself knee-deep in homework assignments and project deadlines, with little time to sit down and actually work on them. It seemed awfully suspicious to her that the teachers were handing out as much work as humanly possible left and right. Then again, these teachers were supposed to be the best of the best. She shouldn’t doubt their intentions.
This increase in homework load is why she currently found herself at the Aurora pool, drying off her long red hair with a school towel she’d snatched from the locker room. She needed a break from everything, and what better way than to go for a light swim in the middle of the day? Especially with no others around. She had the area all to herself.
Humming at the thought, she wrapped her swimsuit-clad body with the towel and padded her wet feet across the pool area and headed inside the girl’s locker room, searching for her own locker. Aha! Found it! Standing in the corner of the empty room, she flipped her locker door open and double checked to make sure everything was in place. She had the rest of the day off, so she could’ve swam for another hour or so if she wanted. It really was good exercise.
No. She shook her head at the thought. No point getting more chlorine in her ears.
Should she shower before she leaves? Get all the chlorine off her skin? Emery had a personal paranoia about public showers, but it might not be a bad idea. No one was around, after all.

Sam had skipped class for today. In fact, he hadn't gone to a single class since starting school yesterday. He did a little research in the library on his own the other night so he could learn a little about hiding in a shadow and shadow jumping, but that was pretty much it. Hiding in something's shadow was pretty cool--especially since no one could see you.
Well, Sam was at the age when a boy gets curious about a girl's body and today, he had decided to see one. Not porn--a real one, so when he saw that pretty redhead leave the pool and enter the girl's locker room, he leaped into a tree's shadow, made a shadow jump and soon found himself inside the redhead's shadow so he'd have a nice view.
Sam was in luck. The girl hadn't had a chance to change yet. He won't get to see much, just a brief glimpse of her before she changed back into her clothes. Wait, did she glance at the showers? Was she thinking what he thought she was thinking? Maybe he just might get lucky after all.

Emery twirled a strand of wet hair around her fingers as she pondered to herself, ultimately deciding she would, in fact, take a much needed shower. Grabbing a bar of soap from her locker to help scrub the chlorine off, she shut the door and proceeded to head toward the showers, humming a quiet tune to herself. Really, it was a nice day out. Maybe she should head to the park after this. Take advantage of her day off.
As she neared the shower area, her bare feet cold against the tiled floor, it suddenly hit her.
Someone was here.
How could she be so careless? Her senses had been dulled during her swim, and she honestly kept it at a muted volume during most of her stay at the academy. No point in constantly sensing the people around her; the thought, alone, drove her mad.
And so, she placed her bar of soap on a shelf in the nearest shower stall and walked back in the main part of the locker room, clutching her towel tightly against herself. “Hello?” she called, listening to her soft voice echo in the empty room. “Is anyone there?”
It didn’t bother her that another girl wandered in the locker room, but she liked to constantly be aware of her surroundings. Besides, it wouldn’t hurt to socialize a bit. She was still new to the school, after all, and wanted to meet any person she got the opportunity with. Well, except those that called her ‘coffee girl’. She was still getting over that stupid nickname.

Sam saw the girl take a bar of soap from her locker. She's gonna do it? The girl started walking toward the showers. Oh, yeah! She's so gonna do it! Today's the day he sees boobies! The girl entered the shower and put the soap on a shelf in the nearest shower stall. Alright, soap's in position. Now for the swimsuit.
Suddenly, the girl stormed out of the shower. What the...? Did she forget the shampoo? It must be the shampoo. She forgot it in her locker. But, the girl didn't go to her locker. She just stopped and asked if anybody was there. Crap, it better not be a teacher!
After a few shadow jumping to various shadows around the room, Sam confirmed that there was no one else in the room. So, why the chick getting all paranoid if there's no one here? Wait, what if she was talking to him? What if she was one of those psychics and could somehow sense his presence? After all, the Professor did say all students had powers. Damn...
Not wanting to shadow jump away empty handed, Sam decided to try and at least have some fun with the girl. He shadow jumped to a shadow behind @emery , then hopped out of the shadow into the light and hugged her from behind. "Hey, cutie. What's your name?"

Emery was confused. One second she felt the presence behind her, the next it felt like it was jumping all over the room. What the heck? Where was this person? She walked around a bit more and peeked over a few lockers, but still couldn’t find anyone.
She froze, thoughts reeling out of control. Could it be a ghost?! She didn’t have much thought on the supernatural, but after enrolling to Aurora Academy her viewpoints had drastically changed based on what she’d seen on campus. Surely it couldn’t be a ghost…could it?
All of a sudden, she felt the presence behind her as arms appeared seemingly out of nowhere, wrapping around her and hugging her close to another body. Without any warning, she let out a screech and leapt in the air, pushing the person away from her with force. A fireball appeared around her head thanks to her pyrokinesis, currently spinning out of control with her wild emotions. That had scared the living daylights out of her. Who was that?!
Turning around to view whoever had just appeared, she spotted a boy of similar age to herself standing before her. A boy? In the girls’ locker room? “You…” Emery couldn’t get the words out, panting slightly as she was still coming down from being frightened. “You scared me! Who are you? Why are you here?” Realizing her outfit, she hastily covered herself with the towel and promptly added, “This is the girls’ room! I think you’re lost.”

Sam's teasing smirk quickly vanished from his face the moment @emery made a fireball. What the hell... I thought she was a psychic? She obviously had more than one power and probably intended to char him real good. If he ran, she'd kill him for sure. There was a shadow nearby. He could probably leap for it. But, would he make it in time? He never tried to outrun a fireball before. Sam decided it was best to play tough. "Boys' room, girls' room--what difference does it make? This school is full of shapeshifters. For all you know I could be a girl in the guise of a boy." He said without answering any of her other questions. After all, she won't tell her name. Why should he reveal his?

Emery couldn’t believe her ears. Was this guy insane? That would be just her luck – running into an insane guy in the girls’ locker room and getting killed by said person. They’d find her body hours later only to shake their heads at her idiocy, wondering what kind of girl would get herself into a situation like that.
This girl would. This girl right here.
But she was getting ahead of herself. And being dramatic – a step she found she did a lot of lately. First she needed to slow her breath and find out what exactly was going on and why this boy was here in the first place. Taking a much needed deep breath, she felt her heart rate slowing down as the fireball around her head calmed down as well, still floating around in a slow, lazy circle.
The guy had mentioned shapeshifters. Emery looked at him with confusion, still clutching her towel with a tight fist. “So…are you a shapeshifter?” she asked hesitantly. He had a point; for all she knew, he could be a girl. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d seen someone change their gender to their preference on campus, but the act itself was still new to her.

Now that Sam thought about it. That was a very good question. After all, everything had a shadow, so his form should be limitless. He closed his eyes, imagining he was a shadow. And, sure enough, his body soon became all black like a living shadow. Next, mold the shadow into a female. He formed B Cup breasts and long, wavy hair, then took on a seductive pose and opened his eyes. "What do you think?"

Emery watched with wide eyes as the boy’s form manipulated into a shadow and shifted to the silhouette of a female. She was shocked; truly shocked. After all, how does one react to someone turning into a shadow? Was that how he got around before? That was incredible!
Forgetting the situation they were in, she found herself clapping with a small smile on her face. Clearly the boy wanted her approval on the matter, so she gave it to him like the people-pleaser she was. Not that it took much effort – she wanted to clap for him. She was genuinely impressed. There had been many extraordinary talents she’d seen in the academy, but this was by far one of the more impressive ones. And slightly terrifying, but she kept that last bit to herself.
“That’s incredible!” she applauded, voicing her thoughts. “But, um, you can turn back into your regular form.” She rubbed the back of her neck, wondering to herself if the boy was his regular form or not. It seemed like he had the ability to manipulate shadows, though, meaning that regular form without shadows had to be himself.
She rubbed her chin in thought, asking once more, “So why are you in here, exactly?”

Sam was tired. Damn, he was tired! He was doing too much way too fast. He only realized he had powers the other day. The shadow jumping, now a complete shadow metamorphosis? He wasn't ready for this. Maintaining this shadow figure let alone a female shadow figure was extremely draining. Suddenly, his shadow form vanished in a poof of smoke, leaving him back to his normal human boy form as he collapsed to the floor. "I-I just wanted to hold you in my arms." He spoke the truth. Had @emery asked why was he spying on her as a shadow, he would have said he wanted to see her naked. But, the only reason why he was still here now, which was what she really asked, was because he wanted to hold her and feel the warmth of her body.

So Emery was right: biologically, he was a male. This fact was confirmed when he released his shadow manipulations and transformed back into his normal self. When he collapsed on the floor, Emery took a step toward him in concern. Was he alright? Perhaps he’d worn himself out? She knew the feeling. Manipulations were a tricky business; after all, she had a tough time learning how to manipulate flames on her own time when she was younger.
But now wasn’t the time to be thinking of the days she was locked away in a closet. Shaking her head, she began to reach down to help him up when she heard him say “I-I just want to hold you in my arms.” She froze in her tracks. Huh? He wanted to hold her?
He seemed like a lonely individual, and his personality was puzzling to say the least. Granted she just met the guy, but she nevertheless was having a hard time figuring him out. On top of everything, she was still in her school swimsuit, grateful it was a one-piece but still feeling exposed regardless.
“Um…” How could she respond to that? What was she supposed to do, leap into his arms? He couldn’t possibly expect that. Emery felt herself growing more and more flustered. “I’m not sure how to help you,” she finally responded, scratching her cheek. “Are you saying you need a hug?” That was the best thing she could think of, though she wasn’t sure if that was what he meant or not. The boy, whose name she still didn’t know, was hard to read at this point.

Sam was almost fully drained. His vision was blurry. He could barely make out @emery 's face. Had she stripped now and let him see herself nude, he wouldn't be able to enjoy her figure. She'd just be a blur. "You... You can't. There is no way for you help me. I... I don't belong. I was not meant to be born. It was... An... Accident." Slowly, his vision became black and his world was darkness. He was still awake, just not able to see anything.

Emery was beginning to grow concerned. The boy had been quiet for a little bit, and his skin appeared pale. Paler than her own skin, which was saying something. Should she bring him to the infirmary? Get him a cold rag for his head? Part of her scolded herself for once again jumping the gun and assuming the worst, but another part of herself couldn’t help but be a worry wort.
And suddenly, he spoke.
She strained her ears to listen, hearing his voice speak soft and meekly. Maybe she wasn’t jumping the gun; maybe she should take him to the infirmary. When he called himself an accident, she felt her eyes grow soft as she stared down at him. He sounded a lot like herself. That was something she could definitely relate to: feeling like a burden. An accident. Something not meant to be.
“That’s not true,” she heard herself say, surprisingly arguing with him. “You’re not an accident. Everyone has a place in this world, and you do, too.” Seeing him on the verge of passing out, she quickly knelt down beside him and shook his body, lightly patting his cheeks and saying, “Hey, can you hear me? Do you need me to take you to the nurse?” Emery couldn’t even call out his name; she didn’t know it yet. She was beginning to feel hopeless. What had she gotten herself into?

It was odd. Passing out, but still being able to hear and speak. How the hell did Sam do this? But, when he thought about it, how much difference was there from the world of dreams and the world of shadows? After all, didn't everything go black before one fell asleep, as if a shadow was cast upon one's mind?
"The nurse?" Sam laughed. "A nurse won't do me any good. She's too old, no where near as good looking as you are in that swimsuit. I'm just a mistake. I'm here, but no one wants me. I'm not even in the right locker room. I might as well disappear. It's not as if anyone would miss me. Farewell." His body slowly started turning black as if becoming a shadow. Deep down inside, he knew, all he needed was to be held by someone who loved him. But, why would anyone ever love him? He hadn't done anything to deserve it.

Emery listened intently while the boy spoke, kneeling beside him in case he needed anything. He made a simple comment about her looking good in her swimsuit, and she felt her cheeks blush. It was just a regular school swimsuit – surely she looked like an average student. There was nothing spectacular about her; even her mother agreed with that. For a boy to compliment her looks was something new to her.
The boy went on to mention how he might as well disappear, causing Emery to frown at his words. As hard as it was to read this boy, she knew all he needed was someone to tell him how special he was. That he was cared for and needed. She just wasn’t sure she could put that in the right context, or at all considering the two were strangers. Would he even listen to her?
The people-pleaser in her knew she had no choice. She had to try and get through to him. “Listen,” she spoke quietly, looking down at him intently. “I believe everyone has a purpose in this world, and that includes you. It doesn’t matter that you were in the wrong locker room. Well, er, maybe it does,” she laughed. “After all, you shouldn’t be in the girls’ room. But that’s okay, no harm was done. I think you’re being too hard on yourself. I would know – I’m hard on myself, too. We’re very similar, you and I.”
Emery noticed his form fading to a shadow and knew she didn’t have much time. With a huff, she added, “Do you mind telling me your name? If it’s alright with you, I’d like to get to know you. It’s not every day I get to meet someone with a shadow manipulation ability.” She smiled at that last part, hoping he would appreciate her humor and lighten up a bit.
