Truth Manipulation. | Aaaand that's it. |
POWER DESCRIPTIONS
Valarie has the power of truth manipulation. Basically, she's just a really good liar whose tales have a nasty habit of turning out to be the truth. Most any statement that exits her mouth can become true if worded the right way, with some limits. Her power usually works in a roundabout fashion, taking a while to affect anything, and thus she cannot use her power to summon objects or people (she also couldn't hold a rubber duck in her hand, say "this is a machete" and expect people to believe her because that won't work.). She can change things that happened in the past, as long as the changed item will not cause extreme repercussions (like preventing the holocaust or something of the like). She can use her power to affect people's thoughts, but this only really works when the thought she wants to bring to the foreground already exists in a smaller capacity. After all, every lie starts with a grain of truth. Her power also allows her to be in two places at one time, if she were to tell someone she was going to the library and instead went out somewhere she wasn't supposed to be -- but this endeavor always ends with the death of on Valarie. She'll never know which.
Her power is only as strong as people's belief in her. The more they distrust her, the easier it is for the threads of her power to snap and leave her looking like a fool. She also does have to be very careful with wording or else something she intends as a harmless comment could be far more, or a manipulation will quickly fail.
(She only has one power because as you can see giving her two after this could quite possibly make her ridiculously OP)

APPEARANCE
Valarie looks quite doll-like. You know, like the Monster High dolls with ridiculously long legs, huge eyes, a slender figure with curves in all the right places, a long mop of hair, and most importantly, permanently bent feet made for high heels? One of those. Wide blue-grey eyes rimmed with thick, dark lashes, small mouth, and the barest dusting of freckles across her face give her an innocent look, and her mess of strawberry blonde waves-curls-who-even-knows just adds to the somewhat Barbie-esque appearance. She's a bit on the short side, standing at 5'2, but she wears heels whenever she can to boost her height at least two inches and make her legs look nicer. Despite her innocent face, she has proportions that make many people think less innocent thoughts, and she knows it. She likes to show off what she has, wearing her skirts as short and her tops as low as possible, but not because she wants others' attention, simply because she thinks she looks good. She has very little respect for dress codes and gets in trouble quite often for her refusal to comply with such standards.
PERSONALITY
Valarie's personality is a hard one to explain. It has mutliple (insert shrek voice here) layers, and it has to be picked apart to get at the true core.
When you first meet her, Valarie is very loud and honestly a little bratty. She has a very commanding presence, despite her smaller size, and likes control. She's just the right amount of seductively mysterious, and her reputation of a troubled past precedes her, clashing with her position in a higher-level dormitory. She has a bit of a problem with authority, something that carries over to her real personality, but she knows when she pushes something too far. She seems like the kind of person who makes friends based on status over true connection, and loves to gossip about everything under the sun. Her catch phrase is practically "so I heard a rumor..."
But as you get to know her, Valarie becomes slightly more of a silent type with a troubled past. The stories she tells about her past evoke pity, even though they're largely exaggerated. She's like one of those animals you see on SPCA commercials with sad music playing behind them, trying to get you to send money. But this isn't the real her. Like her cover personality, it's largely concocted to be what she thinks will let her fit in. After all,, doesn't everyone with power have a tragic story behind them?
At her core, she's just a lonely girl who had a harder time making friends as a kid and learned to lie to make people like her -- or at least keep her from getting too involved with the kinds of people who will hurt her. Her biggest secret is the fact that she's not either of the girls that people think she is. She's just a normal teenager with a bonus bit of power who craves love and attention. Also, nobody can ever know about her succulent and stuffed animal collections. That's about as far from mysterious and edgy as she could get -- so if anyone finds out, she'll kill them c:

BIOGRAPHY
Valarie's life was full of despair from the moment she was born. She never knew her mother...
Okay, we're going to stop right there and tell it straight. Yes, Valarie never knew her mother, but she had two loving fathers to fill whatever stereotypical void would be left in her heart by this absence. They chose to have a child with a surrogate mother, and there were no complications of any sort. Ironically enough, they almost chose to call her Verity before settling on her actual name. Valarie came into the world perfectly smoothly, and began screaming up a storm the moment she was born. No health issues, no dying parent, nothing tragic at all. Complete normalcy.
Valarie's parents were rather wealthy, and she had everything she needed -- most of what she wanted, too. She was an only child, so it was a little lonely sometimes, but she had cousins who visited and she played with kids at the park.
She started kindergarten at the age of five, like most children, but found herself having a hard time connecting with any of her classmates. She didn't have the same background as them, and she had minimal socialization with kids her age. Well, her parents told her to try telling a cool story to make friends. She did this, and when she was still having trouble, she started adding some embellishments to her stories. Whether or not it worked, it soon became a habit and she quickly had a hard time telling any story without using generous hyperbole.
Her school life got a little easier as time went on and she learned what worked to make herself noticeable and popular. She wasn't lonely anymore, she kept in good graces with her fathers, and kept up with schoolwork. Everything was going just as well as it could for a twelve year old. Then she started noticing some strange things happening. Lies she told to keep out of trouble, lies that she knew were just that, lies, started turning out to be right. She couldn't tell anyone about the weird phenomenon, because she would reveal her fault in the process, but she felt that it was more than coincidence and started experimenting. It finally got to the point where she knew something abnormal was going on, once a malicious rumor got out of control and then half the school ended up with lice, and she felt obliged to come clean to her parents. It was unbelievable, seeming like a lie itself, but it was pretty clear that she had a... special talent.
Not too long after, she began boarding at Aurora Academy. Her popular persona had to go under minor adjustments, and she felt freer to be a little less guarded, with less of a mean-girl smear campaign happening at the school, but she felt out of place because she was so ordinary. Not only because her power was subtle and not easily known, but because of how comparatively plain her life was. It seemed like everyone around her had some big, dark secret, and she had none. She hated it, and she felt like she didn't deserve the talent she had because she hadn't sacrificed anything to get it. But nobody else had to know that. Her fabricated personality soon began to shift, and before long she found herself dropping hints at a tragic past and then rushing to cover them, as if they had slipped accidentally. She began to become an enigma, and largely because the seemingly bad life she'd had, the one that lent her an air of mystery to begin with, couldn't be discovered fully if she didn't want it to because it didn't exist outside of her words.
