Emery heard Edmund’s laugh and felt herself smiling a touch. He had a nice laugh. It was relaxing to listen to, as if all your troubles could be laughed away by him. She was glad to be part of the reason he was laughing so much – the boy looked like he could use some laughs in his life.
When he apologized for laughing, she raised her brows in surprise. “Don’t be sorry.” She waved her hand dismissively. “I would never be offended by someone’s opinion. Besides, you make a fair point. While it would be relaxing in Austen’s world, it would probably get boring, too.”
Despite her dismissal, she felt more at ease knowing Edmund apologized. It was honestly something she, herself, would do. Apologizing came second-nature to her; after all, she was always trying to avoid upsetting those she met. Being a first-rate people-pleaser, Emery did everything in her power to make others happy, even going as far as to ignore her own beliefs to please another. She knew it wasn’t right, and that she should really work on finding her true self, but she felt with Edmund’s apology that he might somehow understand her frustrations. Maybe.
For now, she’ll keep it to herself. Who knows what the future may hold, though.
When Edmund agreed to go along with her suggestion, calling it an adventure, Emery felt herself relax a touch. He truly was easy to work with. “Alright then!” She clapped her hands together. “Let’s look for some books! I think they should be in that section over there,” she responded, pointing to an aisle in the back of the library. Motioning for him to follow her, she walked down the aisle and proceeded to look around for a set of books revealing the mysteries of extraordinary abilities, hoping either Edmund or her could find them.

212 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES Edmund quickly follower behind Emery as she wove through the shelves on a mission to find her books. Surprisingly, despite the amount of time he spent in the library, Edmund was barely familiar with the nonfiction section, though he knew every other part like the back of his hand. What could he say, he just wasn't much for learning about the real world, preferring his novels to a boring textbook or biography. But this was different. They were looking for something special, and there was fun in the challenge of locating that something. Edmund lifted his hand unconsciously to skim his fingers across the spines of the books as he looked at the titles. "-Kinesis and -mancy and -pathy, oh my," he muttered as he quickly picked up on the patterns of powers noted in the titles of these books. "What's the difference between, say, hydromancy and hydrokinesis, anyway? Why are there two words for the same exact power? It just seems too confusing." He stopped his musing and his fingers hovered at one book in particular, Pyromancy Through the Ages. "Well, I don't have anything on portal jumping, but here's one on fire powers. Try not to burn it," he joked, sliding it from the shelf and holding it out towards Emery.

Emery skimmed her eyes across the various titles of different books, from Superpowers and You to the mysterious 10 Hidden Ones Among Us. That sounded intriguing. Truth be told, she had been meaning to filter through this section of the library since she first arrived on campus. Dealing with several different extraordinary abilities of those around her, she wanted to be better prepared and not have a heart attack the next time someone appears directly in front of her.
When she was younger and had first discovered her ability to create and manipulate fire, she had been on her own. Limited to the books of her household – none of which covered the mysteries of pyrokinesis – Emery was forced to learn everything regarding her power alone. It was a lonely time filled with her questioning herself over and over, wondering if there was a single person like her out in the world.
Luckily for her, two minutes on the campus of Aurora Academy proved there were, in fact, others like her. As well as others not like her, which fascinated her all the more.
She vaguely heard Edmund muttering to himself about the same power with various names, causing her lips to turn up slightly at the humorous comments. It was odd, but perhaps it was simply one of those things that was lost in translation. Her thoughts were abruptly stopped when he addressed her directly, handing her a book on exactly what she’d been looking for: pyrokinesis. Perfect!
Emery gave a nod and small “Thanks” as she took the book from his hands, scanning the title before slipping it under her arm to hold while she grabbed a few more books from a shelf. Truthfully, she wanted to learn it all. She had a curious mind that always sought out knowledge, ever since she was young. It raised her spirits a touch that now, finally, she would get to learn more about her apparent culture and the school she now lived in.
Bringing the books back to the table, she let out a huff as she carefully placed them down before plopping back in her chair. “So,” she started, pushing apart the books so all the titles were facing up and in view. “What shall we start with first? What would you like to learn about?” she asked, turning to face Edmund with a questioning look.

246 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES Edmund gave a curt smile as Emery took the book from him. She continued to look through the shelves for books, but he just kind of stood there, skimming but not picking anything out. He wasn't disinterested, just didn't know where to start. So it was quite the relief when the redheaded girl started back to their table with enough books for the both of them. Edmund trailed behind her, grabbing a few books from her arms in repayment for her similar action at the beginning of their meeting, and sank down into a chair before thumbing through the top one. Temporal Manipulation was as far as he read before he snapped it shut. Not today. He wasn't going to delve into that. He set it to the side, trying to keep his actions fluid so that he wouldn't attract attention, but the minute his hands could retreat to the safety under the table, he dug his fingernails into his palms. Anything but that. He glanced at Emery, seeing if she had anything in particular she was looking at, but she deflected the choice at him. "Uh..." He stared at the books for a second, but none of them stood out to him at all. He shook his head with a weak laugh. "I have no idea what to start with. I mean, there's always pyrokinesis, or we could start with one of the less familiar ones. It's your choice." He smiled at her, awaiting her answer.

Emery tsked. She didn’t want to be the one to choose, but she had no choice if that was what Edmund wanted. Hmm. What would be a good choice that Edmund would like? She skimmed a view titles, taking into account his suggestion of pyrokinesis, before pulling out a book amongst the various one scattered across the table.
“Aha! How about this?” she asked, picking up a book titled Encyclopedia of the Kinesis. Flipping through a few pages, she mumbled out, “It looks like a book full of kinesis abilities and descriptions. I think there was a second copy – hold on.”
Placing the book down and rushing back to the previous section of the library she scouted, Emery scanned the shelves before coming across the familiar title. Letting out a little “Found you!”, she picked up the book and scurried back over to the table, placing the second copy in front of Edmund for him to view on his own.
“Okay, let’s see…” she trailed off, flipping through a few pages. She wanted to find something different, something new that would satisfy her curiosity. Flipping to the P section of the book, originally aiming to find pyrokinesis, she was surprised to find dozens of other entries before it. “Pulsakinesis…the ability to manipulate all types of pulses? Wow. Can you imagine being able to control another person’s pulse?” she asked, baffled. The thought, alone, terrified her. There were abilities in here far beyond her imagination.
“Phobikinesis…the ability to manipulate fears. Oh god.” She felt her stomach drop. She was wrong before; this was what terrified her. Forgetting completely about her originally wanting to learn about pyrokinesis, she instead skimmed for other abilities with her ears open for any feedback Edmund might bring.

237 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES Edmund sighed quietly in something resembling relief as Emery delved into a new book without a second thought. He leaned closer to her across the table to hear her better, his clecnhed fists slowly relaxing as he did so. Emery began to speak, reading from the book, and Edmund cocked his head to listen. Pulsokinesis... he frowned. That was a terrifying thought. He supposed it could have positive applications... someone coudld become a doctor, help patients with erratic heartbeats? But more prominent in his mind were thoughts of how quickly it could go wrong. The next one, phobokinesis, was terrifying, but to him, somewhat less so. "You don't need a special power for that, you just have to be an asshole," he muttered. Pain and fear were easy to cause and make grow, and it could be manipulated with power but what kind of person would you have to be to do that? Edmund wished he could just stare in disbelief at the power, thinking nobody would ever wield it effectively, but he knew so much more could be done with so much less. Unfortunately, it was all too plausible. "If I met someone with a power like that... I'm sure that at least most of them are nie people but the thought of one bad egg just scares me. I mean, it's the same with every power, I suppose, but that's a far more slippery slope."

While Emery read the passages to Edmund, she realizes how much time had passed by glancing at a clock on the wall. Wow. Time really could fly. She hadn’t realized how much she was enjoying her time in the library. It certainly helped to have a reliable partner by her side. She couldn’t think of a better person than Edmund to read books with. Most people she knew tended to look down upon wanting to better educate oneself, but it seemed with him that wasn’t the case. And she was honestly glad for that. If it weren’t for that, she wouldn’t have found a person to share her time with in the library today.
When Edmund commented on the phobikinesis, Emery couldn’t help but feel he was speaking from experience when he made a harsh remark about people. She could certainly relate – her mother was one that seemed to thrive on her fear of being in a closet, locking her away in that tiny storage room any chance she could when Emery would make the smallest of mistakes.
But now wasn’t the time to get down thinking about that. She tsked herself and shook her head, red pigtails flying about from side to side with her motion.
“Edmund, do you mind if I ask you a question?” Emery paused in her speech before continuing. “How did you discover your abilities? And when? I’m always curious to find out about others’ stories and see if they’re similar to my own.” Realizing she might’ve asked a question too personal, she quickly reeled back and added hastily, “Of course, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”

312 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES He was getting too open. Emery was asking about when he got his powers, and Edmund couldn't tell her the full truth because all he would get was pity. He couldn't refuse to answer, either, because that would evoke the same response; after all, who wouldn't talk about when they got superpowers unless it had a negative story attached to it? Usually he avoided ever getting asked such a question, but he did have a relatively vague answer formulated in case of situations like this. And it wasn't really lying, just not the whole truth. "Well, it started with my brother, Edgar. Yes, my parents really named us after the brothers in King Lear. I don't know if it was unintentional or if they just looked up Shakespearean names and thought those two sounded nice without ever reading the actual story... my sister's named Juliet, too."[b/] Now he was just stalling. Come on, it wasn't like he was going to actually reveal any sort of tragic backstory to his new friend. He wasn't that dumb. "But, anyway, I digress. Sorry. Edgar was -- is a couple years older than me and he discovered he could screw with time. He thought it was cool and encouraged me to see if I could do anything like that. It took me a couple years but eventually I showed some talent for telekinesis and ended up here." He shrugged, looking away from Emery. "I dunno, it's not that interesting of a story..." He crossed his arms and focused his gaze back on the redhead sitting across from him. "So is it similar to your story? I mean, I'd be interested to hear how you found your powers, if you don't mind." He gave her a brief smile before he continued talking. "I mean, you're a pyromancer. There's sure to be some cool special effects somewhere in your tale."

Emery was watching Edmund’s features, noticing him tense up to her question. It was a personal one, after all, so she could understand that type of a reaction. She felt instant guilt cloud her soul, knowing she should’ve kept her mouth shut. He clearly didn’t want to talk about it. Of course, she already gave him an out by saying he didn’t have to answer, but he probably felt obligated to. She should just change the subject.
About to do so, she was surprised when he finally started to speak, going into a story about his childhood. Since he was being so kindly open to her, Emery gave an encouraging smile as she listened intently to his words. She laughed a bit at his siblings names, adding in, “No wonder you’re a fan of Shakespeare. I think you might be a little biased thanks to your parents.” Emery hoped he realized she was only teasing, and proceeded to continue listening to his tale as he explained how he discovered his abilities.
Despite the fact that he claimed it wasn’t interesting, there was one thing that caught her attention in his story. “So do you think our abilities are genetic? I mean, you and your brother are both talented, so that’s quite the coincidence. Does your sister have an ability as well?” She realized she was asking several questions at once and might be overwhelming the poor boy, but she found herself genuinely curious. Besides, the more time she spent with Edmund, the more she felt she understood him and felt comfortable around the boy.
When he asked Emery about her story, she decided it was only fair to tell hers in return. An eye for an eye. “My story is similar in the sense that I did discover my abilities on my own, only I wasn’t encouraged by anyone. I had no idea these kinds of talents even existed. I…used to spend a lot of time on my own, and one day it just clicked. When I was in my early teens, I used to get very emotional. My emotions often controlled me, and while I was letting out my frustrations one afternoon I noticed a fireball circling around my head.” She let out a laugh. “It took me a while to calm down and realize I had created it. Eventually I started messing around with this fire ability and learned how to control it.”
Realizing she had been going on a tangent with her long tale, Emery held a hand to her face and quickly added, “Oh, I’m sorry! Am I talking too much?” Her mother always made her aware of how much she spoke, so she tried to avoid talking for long periods of time as to not annoy others.

345 WORDS ▪ @emery ▪ NOTES Edmund shrugged at the genetic comment. "I'm kind of skeptical that it's a genetic thing. Neither of our parents have any sort of power and neither does my little sister, Juliet." He sighed slightly at his mention of his sister. He was honestly relieved that she hadn't been born with any talent like his or Edgar's, because if she had, how likely would she have been to wind up just like Edmund had, beaten and broken by their older sibling? She could stay naive to the trouble that had been caused. She'd already forgotten most of what happened that night. But he couldn't dwell on that now. She was safe and that was al that mattered. He returned to Emery's thought, continuing his answer. "I'm not really a big science person, so I don't know what the probability of inheriting a power from two parents without any expression of such a trait would be, but I don't think it's high. We just got lucky. Or unlucky, depending on how you want to look at it." He paused to listen to his new acquaintance's own story in fascination. Like him, Emery hadn't known about the existence of such power until her circumstance led her to it. Well, they could click over that, at least. She definitely exhibited more control over her power... Edmund hated that he couldn't control either of his. His telekinesis cam in waves and he couldn't know when it would spark up. Not to mention the telepathy. Honestly, he felt he would be happier if he didn't have his powers. Especially the second one, revealing people's feelings towards him when he'd rather just stay in a world with the illusion they presented to him. Suddenly, Emery apologized, asking if she had been talking too much. Had he looked disinterested? He had to stop getting lost in his thoughts, all it did was make him moody and keep him from paying attention to important things. "You weren't talking too much," he quickly countered. "I think your story is cool. I'm glad you told me."

Emery hummed in thought. Edmund had a point about genetics; after all, why wouldn’t his sister inherit an ability as well? “It’s a mystery, I suppose,” she finally mused out, placing a hand to her chin and rubbing her skin thoughtfully. “Who knows. Maybe the library has a book on the possible genetics of our powers.” She wasn’t sure if this was true or not, but the school did have a massive library and she was willing to bet they had books on theories of abilities.
When Edmund replied that she wasn’t talking too much and that he appreciated her story, she felt her heart skip a beat. Emery didn’t think she was that interesting, but apparently he did. She knew at that moment the two could be great friends. At least, she hoped. She was genuinely enjoying her time in the library, moreso than usual with the company she had.
“Thank you,” she replied bashfully, “for listening. It’s nice to be able to talk with someone like this.” Emery hoped it was the same for Edmund. She hoped she wasn’t being a bother. It didn’t seem like it, but some people were harder to read than others.
