Amaryllis twirled a strand of violet hair around her finger, absently noticing a few stares directed her way. She blinked back in mild interest. Hadn’t anyone ever seen someone swim using aerokinesis before? They were certainly acting like they hadn’t. Aurora Academy was a school for the gifted, so how could they not expect to see someone use their gifts every once in awhile? Still, normally she kept low on the radar and preferred attention off of her, turning her gaze back to Rhys at the thought.
Rhys, meanwhile, was busy asking her how she could swim. She opened her mouth, about to tell him how she just came up with the concept, when he cut her off by saying she liked him. Her mouth instantly snapped shut as she sent a hard glare his way, the air around her picking up speed due to her anger at the situation. He thought she was a liar? That was the worst insult he could’ve possibly thrown.
Using the wind around her, she directed it with a flick of her wrist toward Rhys, having it push down on his head and force him under the water – hoping it kept him there as long as possible. “I can’t swim,” she snapped, glaring at him. “If you were a better teacher, I wouldn’t have to resort to using other methods to stay afloat.”
Amaryllis wasn’t even certain he could hear her under the water and didn’t particularly care at that point, hoping he spent his time underwater learning how to properly speak to a girl.

Rhys didn't expect the reaction he got. Amaryllis had given him a glare, but Rhys fully believed she could actually swim. Maybe he jumped the gun a little, but the guy was sure that she could. So the anger seemed like it was unjustified. Or maybe it was one of those moments where 'she had the power inside her all along'. Which, actually, wasn't far from the truth. She did have the power in her. The power over wind, to which Rhys didn't realize that. So when Rhys began to laugh from how it seemed like Amaryllis was either a quick learner or lying to spend time with him, it gave him no time to hold his breath, an immediately began to taste chlorine on his tongue. He was submerged under water, and he hadn't gotten any air, or he had lost that air in laughing. Quickly, he closed his mouth, but it was far too late. His lungs were begging for air. Then the memory surfaced. * * * Young eight year old Rhys gasped for air, as Calixto held him, his nasty, disgustingly nailed hand pushed him back into the cold watered sink. Rhys barely had time to breathe, but he could hear what he was saying. He could still hear it.
'A miserab-... -man being. Yo-... -o far in life! You shou-... -ie! DIE!"
Rhys remembered that while water filled his lungs, he had no power to fight back. No way to get back at the Ringmaster. All he had was the collective unconscious that would be death. And as his red eyes slowly closed to his thought-to-be death at the time, he remembered one thing. That one day, Calixto would get what was coming to him.
And then the memory faded.* * * It was as he felt himself fading, that Rhys' quick thinking got him out of the situation. Quickly, he created a pocket dimension for his body, outside of the wind blowing him, or the water, and to Amaryllis, he was gone. Poofing out of existence for just a few seconds. And then, he poofed back in, throwing his head up, and breathing in as much air as he could muster. He gasped so loudly, that the whole pool population had looked over their way, his lungs filling back up with sweet, sweet oxygen. He threw his head back, his hair following, as his red eyes moved to Amaryllis. Instead of acknowledging what happened, or wanting pity, Rhys gave his same stupid grin after coughing for a flat out minute, and spoke. "C-Crazy wind we're having this season, huh?" His head was pounding from a headache he wished he could've Ibuprofein'd away. Amaryllis Coll

Amaryllis watched as he laughed before being quickly submerged, her eyes narrowing at his actions. Did he have a death wish? No one ever laughed at her face. His constant grin was beginning to irk her, as if he were always amused and not taking her seriously. How could anyone take him seriously? It was only natural he was a circus performer, she supposed.
Her eyes drifted below the water line, watching him struggle for a few seconds before suddenly disappearing from her view. She blinked, startled, her wind dying down along with her rising confusion. Where did he go? She looked up and down the pool, finding no sight of Rhys anywhere. Had he somehow snuck away? She doubted it; she’d been looking right at him.
And just as she was about to give up, he appeared once more, gasping for air. She stared at him in shock, her brain taking a few moments to register it must’ve been some ability of his, similar to herself – the difference being she couldn’t disappear out of thin air.
He turned his attention back to her once he gathered enough oxygen back in his lungs, and she stared at him with a raised brow as if expecting an explanation. Instead she got an aversion, him commenting jokingly about the crazy wind. Did he not realize that was her? He was rather slow, if that was the case.
Flicking some water at him with her finger, she murmured, “You’re about to lose your chance at a tutor.” Amaryllis crossed her arms around the safety of her noodle, explaining in greater detail, “I have yet to swim normally. I thought you were a performer.” If he was a performer, by her logic he should be able to teach his performances – one of those being how to swim. She was ten seconds away from leaving the pool altogether, but thought she’d give him one last chance. It wasn’t his fault she briefly lost her temper and tried to drown him.

Grabbing onto his head, wincing in pain, Rhys closed his eyes for a minute as he tried to diffuse the tension, only making more tension as he opened his mouth. Oh great, he wasn't even trying to do it that time; he had just escaped drowning! This girl was impossible, and Rhys' head was hurting too much to think of a half viable solution to the problem. It pounded even after a bit of usage of the pocket dimension, let alone full usage of it. After steadying his breathing, his headache subsided, finally giving him a break, only for him to get thrown water at a moment later, and threatened with the 'almost losing a tutor'. To which, Rhys opened his mouth again, and instead of inserting his foot in it, merely came right out with it. "Yeah... joking." as he pinched his nose and attempted to get his head back on straight. Hearing her say that she thought that he was a performer stung a bit, because while true, it mimicked what he said in regards to her swimming. Breathing for another moment, he figured she did have a point. "I am. Though magician's don't reveal their tricks; so I rarely try to figure out the other students here. And doll, you're like a rubix cube that I can't solve." he gave a winning grin, trying to sound charming agani, resetting the tension in the air in the best way he could. Still, as his eyes seemed to be a bit red, he crossed his arm. How did she do that? Forcing his head into the water? Spatial manipulation? Doubtful, that was his schtick... it must've been something to do with wind. Now that he had time to breathe, time to think, it made sense. Rhys hoisted himself up off the pool, and sat so his feet dipped in, his full body suit still hiding the majority of his body, but not hiding his muscular body. "Despite imminent drowning threats to both of us... why did you come here today?" Rhys asked, his grin gone, with a replaced curious smile. Amaryllis Coll

Amaryllis crossed her arms, faintly surprised he was still even here. A smarter man would’ve run off by now, but he stayed put. Either he was reckless or stupid – possibly both. She was learning way too much about this boy in the short period of time they’d been together, and she didn’t know how to feel about that.
He didn’t seem interested in her tutoring threat, and she puffed her cheeks out hotly in response. That’s the last time she ever offers something as considerate as tutoring. It was meant as a thank you for him teaching her swimming, but he had yet to do so in the first place. Her grades were good all around the board, so he’d be missing out on that. Not that she cared. She was just frustrated that he didn’t appreciate how generous the offer she made was to begin with.
She stared at him as he compared her to a rubix cube, frowning. Why was he trying to figure her out? What would that accomplish? “I’m not another girl you can add to your list of conquests,” she found herself saying before she could stop herself. “So stop trying to figure me out.” Amaryllis was certain that was his motivator by this point – merely because she was female. She didn’t doubt that he had girls lining around the block for a piece of him, and it frustrated her for him to think she was an object to be won over. Of course she was more complex than a rubix cube – she was a person.
He proceeded to ask her why she came to the pool to begin with and she let out a heavy sigh, feeling tired of answering his endless questions. “I told you. I came here to relax.” Amaryllis clutched the pool noodle closer to her, continuing on as her eyes drifted across the water. “I have a lot of stress on my plate. While everything may be a joke to you, I take my studies seriously. I just wanted a place to unwind.” Quickly going on the defensive, she added, “It’s not like I relax often.”

Rhys looked down. He didn't necessarily mean that as an insult. He meant it in a way that she was so complex that he found an unnatural urge to figure her out. Honestly, it wasn't supposed to be an insult. And all things considered, he never tried to figure out other girls before. Even with the legion in dance class, he had never really been that close to anyone before... well, anyone he could remember without tons of repression behind it. As he sat on the side of the pool, he made a sheepish smile, turning his gaze away. "Didn't mean that to sound so bad... you know, despite my irresistable charm, I don't really like girls trying to chase me like a trophy of affection." He began to open up, twiddling his thumbs together, moving his gaze down to the pool. He sighed, shaking his head, before his gaze returned to Amaryllis, his eyes making contact. "You know, figuring you out is just the first step to being your friend, right?"He tried to be sweet about it, just a ltitle anyways, but her saying he treated everything like a joke stung; not because it was insulting, but because it was true. He closed his eyes, and twiddled his thumbs faster. He had to think of a response that was befitting for him, yet seemed to make her think of him less as a joke. For some reason, he didn't want to be a joke around her. "Yeah well... jokes diffuse only so much tension." His face turned down, his mouth droooping a bit. He was visibly looking down now, showing more vulnerability for a minute, before returning to his goofy grin. "Nah, I'd rather diffuse tensions than to let things sit as they are, ya'know doll?" He gave the happy look he always did, before getting back in the pool. "Okay, let's try swimming normally again, yeah?" Rhys smiled, asking Amaryllis one more time. Amaryllis Coll

She listened as Rhys mentioned his irresistible charm and, before she could stop herself, a small chuckle bubbled its way up her throat. The laugh passed through her lips and she held a hand over her mouth to recompose herself, hiding the hint of a smile tugging up her lips. “Irresistible? You really have no modesty, do you?” Amaryllis turned her steady gaze on him, watching him with curiosity as he twiddled his thumbs. “Maybe you mistook irresistible for irksome.”
Rhys continued on, making a hint about wanting to be friends and Amaryllis tilted her head, even more confused. “Why would you want to be friends with me? I’ve only caused you trouble,” she mused, keeping her gaze on him. She didn’t understand his interest in her. If he wasn’t motivated because of her gender, then why? Why her? There were plenty of other girls that wouldn’t try to drown him.
He proceeded to move his thumbs faster and look almost depressed, her raising a brow in response. Was what she was saying really affecting him that much? It’s not like they were close – a normal person would’ve either blown off her insults or walked away, but he did neither. Rhys was proving to be more of a mystery to Amaryllis as she frowned at the thought, wondering what was going on in his head.
And just like that, his grin returned as if it had never vanished. She wasn’t convinced of his act to pull everything together, but said nothing regardless. He called her doll again, and she realized he’d been calling her that several times. Her brow twitched in annoyance. “That’s another thing,” she started. “Stop calling me that. I’m neither small nor made of stuffing. That name makes no sense.”
Rhys asked her if she’d like to try swimming again and she glanced at the water hesitantly. Amaryllis didn’t want to make a fool of herself by almost drowning again, but she didn’t want to give up either. Letting out a sigh of frustration, she nodded her head in agreement and proceeded to await his instructions, holding her pool noodle close to her in the water.

It started with a laugh. Just a small chuckle from Amaryllis, but Rhys felt a tad bit happy from that. His face began to noticeably heat up. That laugh was magical, surely, and he wondered for a bit if this was also something else she had, gift-wise. Did she have the power to make him feel odd with just laughing? Probably not... but it didn't do any less to make Rhys smile. There was an obvious blush on his face, a reddening he couldn't stop, and Rhys wished to himself. Why the moment couldn't last forever. Then she spoke about being friends. Right. Friends. That was the term Rhys used. Rhys responded in time to her comment, and he shrugged. "Couldn't tell you. I could say anything, but it wouldn't be true. You're my type would be close, but I typically don't like ice queens. So, to emphasize. I have no idea, but I just want to." Rhys hopped back into the pool, his eyes looking over Amaryllis with a quiet interest yet again. Though, noticing she was annoyed at doll, the blackette laughed, rubbing the back of his head, as he shrugged. "Yeah, but you look like you could be one. It's a term of endearment for pretty girls, I guess." Rhys gave his dumb little grin, getting into the pool, and then proceeding to show Amaryllis how it was done yet again, this time making sure to keep her afloat on the water while teaching her, that way she wouldn't risk drowning. He helped her use the noodle to full effect as he taught her how to swim, and... it was a slower process this time, admittedly. * * * A little over an hour seemed to pass, as Rhys got out of the pool. Gesturing to the side of the big water hole, he held his hand out to her. "Alright, I think that's enough for one day, yeah?" he gave her a very happy smile. Rhys was content.. and whether or not Amaryllis got it didn't matter, but something else mattered more now. What was it? Amaryllis Coll
