Amaryllis let out a soft sigh, flicking her eyes downward to glance at her handy wristwatch. Five minutes till Dance I started; plenty of time to ease her way the rest of the way to class. She inwardly wondered what possessed her to sign up for this class. She wasn’t flexible, and she didn’t like performing in front of others. In fact, she’d prefer as little attention to come to her as humanly possible.
So why~?
She shook her head lightly. She knew why – it was because of Nettle, her younger sister. Nettle had been so full of life before her comatose state. Singing and dancing were her favorite hobbies, and Amaryllis would hear her singing her heart out at different hours of the day and night. She wanted to feel closer to her, and so she signed up for the dance class on a whim and didn’t look back.
Until now. The first day of class.
Her footsteps eventually brought her to the classroom door, letting out another sigh before turning the knob and letting herself in.
It was a large room; at least, larger than the average classroom. A wide-panned mirror acted as one wall of the room, with hardwood floors and a few chairs toward the back. She supposed it made sense for the chairs to be away from the center of the room – leaving space to actually dance – but it still looked odd to her. A few students were already busying themselves with warm ups, stretching out on the floor while a few others chose to lounge on the chairs. Tugging on the strap to her backpack, she made her way over in the corner of the room and sat at a seat in the back, hoping to go unnoticed until class actually began.

Dance class was quaint, if nothing else. Rhys very much had a need to stretch himself out a bit, his limbs needing the workout since his time at the circus had since come to an end. Most guys would be too manly to come here, but to hell with social norms. Rhys never had the stereotypical upbringing anyways. Why bother listening to what people think of him? It was a place for girls and guys to come together, and swing their hips in a non-sexualized manner. At least until the hanky panky. Still, day one of the dance class would commence soon. Rhys was one of the first ones here, and he already undid his uniform just a bit. His black skin-tight shirt, his tan slacks that did the same. His gloves stayed on too, and then he began doing his normal stretches. First, grabbing his legs and really stretching them good, almost behind his head in fact, he did one after another. The girls who were present watched in amazement; but Rhys paid them no mind. Then, stretching his arms. Having not watched the door open up, Rhys quickly stretched, before making a handstand. He made a sigh of relief. This was fine. Oh! That reminded him. This class; it required a consistent dance partner. Rhys turned around to the other girls or guys, standing on his hands still. None of them really screamed like his type. He was more for the standoffish types, that way they could show their true colors. Someone who had more risk over reward, like a bear you poke a stick with to see what it does. Someone like... "Hello, nurse." Rhys spotted a particular purple-haired beauty, and began to hand-walk over to her, not paying mind to how ridiculous he might have looked being on his hands and all. As he neared the girl slowly, he looked up to the taller girl, his head down below as he saw her take a seat. As he reached the corner, Rhys made a grin. "Hey there! Name's Rhys. We've got a few minutes before the class starts. This teacher likes putting us in groups of two for the semester. I heard from a buddy... so, saw you were alone, and-" he jumped off his hands and onto his feet, wiping his face, his black hair moving in the small wind that was made from his leap. "-how about we partner up? Takes two to tango, yeah?" He looked at Amaryllis, a grin plastered on his face like the day he was born. He wasn't hitting on her, just being friendly. Amaryllis inspected her nails, tapping her foot impatiently as she awaited for class to begin. More students filed in after her, taking up stretching on the floor or sitting in chairs nearby. Not that she hardly noticed; her attention was elsewhere, thinking quietly to herself how she’d manage to survive this class. If it weren’t for Nettle, she’d never even consider it. She tsked at herself, not understanding why she let a weakness like reminiscing on the past persuade her plans for the future.
“Hey there!”
Her navy eyes drifted up from her hands to see…a young man standing on his own hands. She blinked, wondering what the hell he was doing. He began talking in a ramble-sort of way, eventually getting to the point of asking her to be his partner. His body eventually leapt back to a normal standing position – much to her relief, as it was odd to look at him otherwise – and gave her an award-winning smile, causing her frown to deepen.
Why her? Clearly there were other girls in the class giving him suggestive looks and trying to catch his eye. His attention on her only drew suspicion.
Shaking her violet hair, she murmured, “No thanks. I don’t do partners” and returned her attention to her nails, trying to show she wasn’t interested. If the teacher gave her no choice, then so be it, but it certainly wouldn’t be with this boy. His energy, alone, was through the roof, and while he might make for an easy A with his clear flexibility, she’d prefer to not want a partner she’d roll her eyes at. Letting out a sigh, she glanced past the boy to see if the teacher had arrived yet, beginning to lose her patience as the minutes ticked by.

Ice Queen much? Not that Rhys could blame her; after approaching the girl on his hands; it probably made him look like the weird kid. And while that may or may not have been true, Rhys only felt himself smirk. This was a challenge. Even with the other girls attempting to grab his attention for his flexibility or his unmentionables, Rhys stayed where he was, rubbing the back of his head with a toothy grin. There was a noticeable sparkle to his teeth too. Taking a different approach, this girl needed someone to have a verbal spar with. Instead of going the Prince Charming approach, he decided to open the book, and read what was there to tell. "Shame. Here I thought you were sitting alone because your boyfriend was coming! But you don't do partners." He sat down in the chair next to her, turning it around backwards to sit in it the way that chairs were not meant to be sat in. Crossing his arms over the top of the chair, he tilted his head, and looked over the senior with that same stupid grin. Rhys continued with the verbal sparring, leading the conversation slowly to where it needed to go. "Look, ice princess. I dig the loner vibe, I really do. But it takes two to tango, and the unapproachable act isn't an easy dance to perform." Rhys leaned forward a bit, hoping that the ice queen over here at least understood logic. With his same stupid grin, he pushed his head forward a bit and looked at Amaryllis. It was a risk. It could be taken the wrong way entirely. He could have been too forward about this, and be left in the dust, sad and alone for five minutes. Or, on the contrary, it could've gone much better than he expected. Only time would tell, and as he felt the clock of the room ticking, a tiny bit of sweat trickled down the back of his neck. Taking a deep breath, Rhys eased the tension he built, shooting himself in the foot a bit. "How about, we partner up for just today, and if you really can't do partners, you can tell the teacher after class. Yeah?" he made a smile over a grin, trying to turn his charm to max. “Shame. Here I thought you were sitting alone because your boyfriend was coming! But you don’t do partners.”
Her eye twitched, fingers tightening into a fist in her lap. Clearly he wasn’t planning on leaving her alone, this thought further proven as he took a seat next to her and called her an ice princess. She sighed, crossing her legs over one another and turning his way as he continued to try engaging her. Amaryllis was used to being called strange names like that and didn’t bat an eye at the name-calling. What bothered her was his forceful attitude. She wanted to be left alone, and he wasn’t taking no for an answer. And so the two were at an impasse.
He continued on with his persuasion speech, slowly inching closer to her as he did so. She held her ground, refusing to budge an inch and hardening her eyes as she stared into his own. “I don’t know why you’re so insistent,” she finally mused out, keeping her voice low. “This is my first dance class. I’m an amateur. Why don’t you buddy up with someone that knows what they’re doing.”
She didn’t pose that last sentence as a question, hoping he’d take it for the statement that it was. While it was true he was easy on the eyes, his personality was rather overbearing and she didn’t want to deal with his constant blabbering. Crossing her arms over her chest, she raised a brow at the sound of the teacher waltzing in the room, briefly turning her gaze away from him to stare at the small woman now beginning to command the class.

Ah, so she was an amateur? Rhys grinned again. So he was at least having her open up a bit! Good, that made the boygrin in delight. This was good, no, great even. Even thought she didn't know how to dance, best to dance with someone that could secure her grade, right? Rhys leaned forward further, despite the teacher having come in, and tilted his head more, same stupid grin, and looked at the girl again, still not taking the hint, and instead, moving back and forth in his chair. "Who, them?" the black-haired boy leaned his head back to the grouping of girls here or there that seemed to stare at him. Envious as they may've been, Rhys shook his head. "Nah. No offense to them, but you're interesting, and it looks like you could use a friend here." He made his same smile, trying to at least be a little sweet, and maybe go full circle, just a bit. "I've got moves, sweetheart." Rhys winked at the purple-haired girl, his red eyes showing any of his confidence that his grin failed to translate. This would be the final straw, of course. If she said no this time, perhaps he would go talk to one of the other girls. Maybe one of the few guys here. Rhys didn't discriminate. But for some reason, this girl was interesting to him. "How about it? I promise to uphold what I said. Give it a chance." Rhys leaned closer, the grin returning, raising and lowering his eyebrows in quick succession to seem cuter than he was. Amaryllis’ attention was turned from the teacher to the underclassman – at least, she assumed so with the way he acted – as he leaned closer to her. He was starting to get in her personal space, and she opened her mouth to shoo him away when he cut her off with his voice, saying she looked like she needed a friend. Her mouth slowly closed in response, wondering how that was a strange thing to say to a stranger. She tilted her head in confusion, some of her violet hair falling over her shoulder at the movement.
To be fair, she only had a handful of people she could call ‘friends’, and that was using the term loosely. Still, out of all those friends she never expected to have someone like him in the mix. She should’ve been offended by the comment. Any other girl would have. Instead she drummed her fingers against her leg, listening as he continued on about giving him a chance.
Her navy eyes briefly cast over to the group of girls staring at him longingly while in the same breath glaring at her, knowing she didn’t need another reason to make enemies. People were already drawn away from her due to her cold personality – now they might add hatred for the people she chose to associate with.
Her ears perked up at the sound of the teacher announcing to the class to choose a dance partner for the semester. She groaned, knowing there was no way out of it now unless she personally spoke to the teacher and talked her way out of the situation. Amaryllis wasn’t much for the persuasion type, however, unlike this persistent boy.
Her eyes fell back on his at the thought, staring at that grin of his and letting out a heavy sigh of defeat. “Fine,” she mumbled, standing up and dusting herself off. The rest of the class began taking positions in the room to stretch and practice, Amaryllis looking around completely lost. Glancing back at him, she asked softly, “So what first, partner?”

Okay, so maybe Rhys had been a little rude, but in his defense Amaryllis wasn't making it any easier on him. She was a tough nut to crack, a hard egg to boil, a large piece of ice to melt. Watching her reaction, as some of her hair fell over her shoulder. Honestly, this girl was a beauty. Even if she was a senior, she did have this certain look about her. The je ne sais quoi he was told about, whatever that meant. He didn't have the best upbringing, educationally-speaking, but he heard that said a lot. The tension of waiting was perhaps the worst part. Because if anything, the girl's responses had been immediate, if not seconds delay. So waiting, as the teacher began talking now only made Rhys all the more intrigued by the answer he'd get. Or perhaps it was more worry? Honestly, dancing with her would've been a reward in and of itself, so if anything, but being denied, while would sting, would sting only a little. Still, once her eyes made their way back to him, Rhys' mouth curved into a grin, and then she spoke. The word 'fine' came out of her mouth, and Rhys' grin got even wider. OH yeah, he was pretty happy about that, but he wasn't going to show it outright. "Perfect!" Okay, maybe a little excitement was shown, as he got up with her, and smiled. "Well, first. Let's see how flexible you are. I'll help you stretch. Just do what I do!" Rhys then began to do what he did before, in regards to stretching his legs, almost behind his head rolling his arms around, and stretching his body by one hand over his head going the other direction. He did this, almost simulating yoga. Each movement was meant to be mimicked. "Go ahead, give it a try... uh... what's your name?" Rhys gave a hearty grin, crossing his arms in front of him. The boy seemed excited at her reluctant acceptance of him, causing her to raise a brow in response. Amaryllis wasn’t sure if she’d ever seen someone with as much enthusiasm as him. It was honestly exhausting to watch, let alone keep up with. He mentioned stretching and flexibility, causing her frown to deepen. Those were not her best subjects. Like at all. Nevertheless, she nodded and stretched her arms out as far as they would go, thinking a simple stretch exercise would be enough to satisfy him.
Glancing over his way as she did so, she realized that may not be the case.
His body was clearly more flexible than her own, being bent like a pretzel at the moment and causing her to feel lightheaded just looking at the display. She tilted her head as she studied his movement, wondering how the hell he managed to pull off something like that. He gained the attention of a few more students in the class and suddenly Amaryllis felt self-conscious standing next to him, doing nothing but stretching her arms.
Dropping her arms to her sides in defeat, he politely asked her name as well as her mimicking him. “It’s Amaryllis,” she provided, blinking at his stretch. Deciding to try whatever she could, she knelt down to sit gracefully on the floor and stretched her legs out, reaching her arms toward her feet and trying to grab a hold of her shoes but failing to do so. Either her arms were too short or her legs were too long. She groaned at her display, trying to stretch further and failing again.
Muttering to herself in annoyance, she leaned back and let out a few frustrated huffs, glaring over at him as if it were his fault she wasn’t flexible. “Teach me how to do that,” she demanded, pointing a finger accusingly at him.

The acrobatic circus act looked over to the senior, still stretching, even after it seemed like she was frowning in regards to it. Still, her simple stretching was leading to... 'results'. Maybe not amazing levels of results but at least she knew how to extend her arms out forward for a simple stretch! All things considered, that was better than nothing, and Rhys still appreciated it, even if his body had become akin to a pretzel. Suddenly, Rhys felt conscious of his own stretching, and undid his pretzel-like body shape, before rubbing the back of his head with a nervous chuckle. "Heh. Sorry about that. I overdo it sometimes." he admitted, looking down, and deciding that, while he may not get a perfect stretch in, he might as well help her out. Amaryllis... an exotic name. Rhys felt himself grinning like an idiot; so grinning normally at the girl like he did. Even as the girl groaned, he was grinning like an idiot. Even when she failed, he was grinning like a damn idiot, until finally she snapped him back to reality. He watched, stopping his own stretching, and moved his grin to a smile. His work was cut out for him. The glare and demands were cute, at least. Rhys gave a nod, and proceeded to move behind the girl, their heights almost matching. "Sure. Lemme help you with that." He placed his hands underneath her arms, in order to, in a way, puppeteer her. Pulling her arms further than they had gone, only natural for Rhys, he had the girl stretch out physically with her arms with a little-more-advanced (but still exceedingly simple) stretches. Grabbing her legs, he attempted to pull them behind her, though kept a steady hand on her waist so she wouldn't fall, in order to full stretch her out... albeit with possible difficulty. Then the other leg. And finally, Rhys, twirled the girl by holding onto one of her hands, and twirled her back towards him, as he held her. The girls sighed nearby, but Rhys just grinned, not paying them any mind. The teacher just began to clap, as Rhys used his free hand to rub the back of his neck. "See? A+, right?" Amaryllis Coll |

“Heh. Sorry about that. I overdo it sometimes.”
Her eyes softened a touch at his words, appreciative that he had some humility. She wondered what possessed his body to go through such great efforts. Were all dancers as flexible as him? If so, she was definitely in for embarrassment in front of the entire class. She could already feel the stares of some of the girls glaring at her back, sending them a cold look of her own over her shoulder.
His voice suddenly broke her thoughts, offering to help her out with her stretching. She nodded in agreement, watching him with cautious eyes as he moved behind her and began moving her arms. Amaryllis nearly snapped at him for touching her but reminded herself it was a dance class. Of course there would be touching involved. Shaking her head at the thought, she strained herself out during her stretch, willing herself to stretch as far as she possibly could – which, granted, wasn’t far compared to most.
Suddenly she felt her body spin out in a twirl, slight shock crossing her features as she was just as quickly brought back to his arms. She blinked in surprise, not expecting a stretch to turn into a dance move. Flustered at half the class staring at them – most of them girls – she scratched her cheek in embarrassment and looked away, mumbling, “Not bad, I guess.”
“See? A+, right?”
Amaryllis looked up at him, shaking her head. “Maybe for me. I did all the work.” It was her attempt at a joke, but she showed no hint of smiling. She tilted her head as she asked him, “What did you say your name was?” If they were going to be stuck together all semester, she might as well put a name to a face.

Albeit with a tinge of humility, the twirl Amaryllis was given was enough to make the boy grin. Humble? Well, there was a bit of arrogance, what with him calling out an A+ for what he just did. The teacher surely liked it. The grls were shooting Amaryllis daggers made of every kind of insult imaginable, and yet Rhys paid them no mind. Why should he? They weren't his partner, and unfortunately, no matter who he would've picked, given his current display of acrobatics in form of dance, there would be hatred sent the poor girl's way. If anything, Amaryllis was likely strong enough to endure, being in a castle of ice all the time. As Rhys allowed for Amaryllis finally stand upright after the little dancing escapade, Rhys crossed his arm, an idiot's grin on his face, his teeth showing perfectly. "That's a relief. Here I thought I might have to do all the work!" He had a closed eyes toothy grin plastered on his face as he always did, before the girl asked him for his name again. Oh? Had the ice queen gone soft and already fallen to his dastardly charm? Doubtful, but hey, Rhys could enjoy his pipe daydreams all the same. "Thanks for asking, doll. Name's Rhys Scott Taylor. Ex-circus acrobat, and when not sleeping through class, dexterous enough to lockpick anyone's heart." He almost looked proud, seeing as he openly admitted to being a circus freak, and yet he still didn't look to have any of the more weird, exotic, or disturbing aspects of the circus. He certainly wasn't a frog boy in terms of looks, but Amaryllis was a prize herself, for sure. Of course, he may have laid the charm on too hard, and immediately reeled it in, in order to get back to business. "And, hopefully your dance partner for the semester...?" he showed a knowing smile; if this girl denied him after that little show he put on, he'd surely have to step up his game, definitively. Amaryllis felt another stare direction her way and lazily tilted her head to the side, meeting a girl’s fuming expression with a cold look of her own. The two seemed in a silent face-off, eventually the girl backing down and looking away flustered while Amaryllis raised a brow in response, glancing around the rest of the class as if to challenge another onlooker. Anywhere her eyes went, girls dropped their stares to the ground, and she lifted her chin in triumph. She certainly wasn’t a pushover.
With that, she flipped her hair over her shoulder and returned her attention to her current partner, that of which was laughing it off that she did all the work. Her brows twitched in response. Did this boy have a death wish? The last student to try laying all the work on her received one verbal ‘warning’ from her before quickly pulling his weight for their project, knowing better than to anger the ice queen.
This boy seemed to be an exception.
He proceeded to call her doll – a nickname she had yet to receive – and introduced himself as Rhys, an ex-acrobat. She stared dully at him, unimpressed by his attempts to impress her. Meeting his gaze, she replied in a low voice, “So you’re a performer. I wonder if anything you say isn’t just an act.”
And then those magical words came out.
“You know, despite having two left feet, you do look great when you twirl.”
Two left feet, huh? She closed her eyes, exhaling a deep breath, before slowly opening to stare into his oddly-colored red irises. “You mean this left foot?” Amaryllis questioned, suddenly raising her foot before crashing it down on his, staring at him all the while. She let the smallest hint of a smirk cross her features as she stared at him in amusement, bringing her face closer to his and asking softly, “Still want to be my partner?”

Had Rhys known better. Had only he known better, and the events that were about to transpire would never have happened. Rhys wasn't sure how well this girl would take it, but as it would seem, there would be a violent side to her after all. Had he known, perhaps he would've thought twice about choosing a partner. Had he known, perhaps he could have used his spatial manipulation to add distance between his foot and her foot, and therefore make the whole transaction a moot point.
That was the thing about taking risks. In hindsightt, while it is fun, they are a double-edged sword that can go one way or another, and Rhys had to take the good with the bad.
Rhys had just been about to respond to her regarding what she thought was an act, to which he would've asked 'is it working', but instead, indignation found his foot, like a lightning bolt slamming into his foot so harshly that Rhys' red eyes flew wide open. Now, the thing to keep in mind was, he had great control when it came to pain due to his past. The physical abuse didn't hurt. but it had been years since he had been abused in such a way; his tolerance for pain was lower than his usual average. His mouth hung open, his eyes showing a good amount of pain. As her face moved closer to his, and he could see a smirk on Amaryllis' face, he thought of a curse to fit the situation.
Instead, Rhys gave a smirk of his own, pained in appearance, but mirroring the one he saw only moments previous. He was getting used to the pain again, that same feeling of physical abuse he often got for being bad at what he did. In fact, in that moment, the only thing he could do was smirk, because he felt something he hadn't in a long time; adrenaline.
Backing down wasn't an option anymore. "Forreal? Now I can't think of a better partner. You think any of the other girls would... stomp on my foot... like that?" he felt a tear move down his face. The other girls seemed to have gasped, as well as the teacher, watching the scene before them, to which Rhys began to breathe in, and out. As his eyes began to glow, shifted space between his foot and her foot, and slipped it out as quickly as he could. It felt inhumane in a touch, to lose what your foot was under so suddenly, but it looked to be a human movement to the surrounding people. Amaryllis would easily be able to figure out what it was.
"If anything-" Rhys begun, and felt sweat move down his face. "-the others would do anything if I were their partner to impress me. You've only peaked my interest." Rhys felt his lips curve to a half-grin, having lost a lot of confidence in that stomp. But, he was back.
With his hand extended, he held it to Amaryllis, as if to start their practice. "Shall we, partner?"

Amaryllis wasn’t known for her violent streaks; she was known for her cold nature. Often throughout Aurora Academy she had been named the ice queen of the campus, and like the several other poor choice of words they threw at her she took with a cool stare and indignant attitude. It didn’t take long when she arrived her freshman year for word to spread around the campus about the girl with little emotion – the girl who spoke to no one. Some people belittled her for thinking she thought she was too good for them, and others avoided her like the plague they thought she was. But she didn’t mind it. She was used to being alone after the events that transpired to her sister, the only person she ever truly cared about.
And then came Rhys.
Completely unprepared for his happy-go-lucky attitude toward seemingly life itself, he made his way over to her in her first ever dance class all while walking on his hands. An impressive feat, but in her eyes it was more like a joke. The two were polar opposites, and yet he persisted to be a part of her dance life. She had never met someone as stubborn as her before, and all in a different manner than her as well. The school was small enough as it was, so it was fate for the two to eventually meet.
Her navy eyes slowly came back to focus as she stared him down, watching him cringe in pain from her stomp. She didn’t mean to hurt him to the point of tears, but there was no backing down now. He returned her confident look with a smirk of his own, and she blinked in surprise, half expecting him to yell at her and demand a new partner.
Instead, his voice perked up as he said how he couldn’t think of a better partner. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. Was he enjoying this? A hush fell over the classroom as the students watched the exchange with baited breath, everyone more than likely siding in Rhys’ favor. She wondered what possessed her in god’s name to sign up initially for this dance class. If she never had, she never would’ve met this boy.
“Shall we, partner?”
And with that, Rhys held his hand out for her, awaiting her reply. She stared at it in thought before slowly raising her arm forward, resting her pale hand in his as she grasped onto him. Her eyes flickered up to his as her cheeks puffed out childishly, murmuring, “For the semester it is, then.”
